Massive, solid squashed circular silver medallion about 4 1/2" across, weighing 36 oz. and in its original case; the obverse side depicts the right profile portrait of Henry Morton Stanley recessed in to the center with rough, unfinished outer rim and inscription; the reverse side depicts the four surviving officers of the expedition, Lt. W. Grant Stairs, Surg. T.H. Parke, A.J. Mounteney Jephson and Capt. R.H. Nelson all in right profile portraits, above is a map of Africa placed between the Stars and Stripes and the Union Jack, to the left are plums and tropical plants, to the right are native shields and assegai, below is a landscape showing a range of mountains (all of this is recessed in the center with a rough, unfinished outer rim; the medallion is fitted into its original leather case, lined in blue velvet, the exterior of the case carries scenes of the recipient's part in the journey neatly tooled on the lid and an inscription. a: medallion, b: case
