River, canal

soon to meet
The meeting of the Hillsbo-
rough River, the tree-speckled
body of water in the fore-
ground of the top photo, and
the Tampa Bypass Canal, the
sliver of water in the upper
left, will finally take place
next spring. The confluence of
the two waters in the picture
is just north of Sligh Avenue,
looking east. Digging the canal
meant building a $291,000
bridge for U. S. Highway 301,
shown at left. At right, looking
south, earthmover and dump
trucks sit at the foot of the
canal just south of Harney
Road. The canal here and
other places will ibe between
15 and 20 feet deep, enough to
soak:p a powerful river flood.
