FLORIDA'S FIRST ONE HUNDRED YEARS IN RE: WATER
1845 Florida became a state.
1850 Swamp & Overflowed Lands Act passed. State
received millions of acres of land deemed wet and
unfit for cultivation, on condition that state would
sell only for reclamation.
1851 Board of Internal Improvement established.
1852 Two routes surveyed for cross-Florida canal.
1863 Board of Internal Improvement raised price of
swamp land from 75 cents to $2.50/A.
1866 State granted right to drain area east & south of
Everglades.
1867 Oklawaha made navigable; tourists to Silver
Springs.
1881 First contract with Hamilton Disston approved.
1893 Authorized County Commissioners to construct
drains, ditches or watercourses on petition of 2 or
more landowners.
1913 Ch 298 drainage districts authorized; Everglades
drainage dist. created.
1947 Everglades Nat Park created; Two hurricanes within
one month.
