Environmentalists planning confrontation

of an environmental vigilante group
said Thursday they hope to provoke
"an international incident" In June
by destroying fishing nets they claim
kill thousands of porpoises, seals and
birds in the North Pacific.
"It is our intention to confront
and challenge the drift net fleet on
the high seas," said Benjamin White,
a coordinator for the Sea Shepherd
Conservation Society, which claims

responsibility for sinking five whal-
ing ships.
They are taking the action be-
cause attempts to pass legislation
prohibiting the use of drift nets in in-
ternational waters have come to
naught, said Sea Shepherd President
Scott Trimingham.
A drift net is set with anchors
and buoys and hangs down like a
curtain about 30 feet and stretches
in length from nine to 30 miles.
