Occasion: Photo was taken about three hours before the execution of Danny Rolling, killer of five Gainesville college students in August 1990. We thought that on that day there might be some people at the Wall painting messages related to the execution or student murders. We were a little surprised that almost no one showed up, other than some people from the print and TV media and one person who came from his apartment across 34th Street to pay his respects at the student murders memorial panel. There were some flowers left at the base of the memorial. The day after Rolling’s execution, the panel next to the memorial panel contained the message, “Enjoy hell, Danny Rolling.” By mid-day that message had been defaced with a spray-painted obscene image. |
