Message: Support Local Bookstores!!!
Occasion: The sign painter was reacting to the invasion of the Gainesville market by three large bookstore chains in the previous year: Books-a-million opened in May 1993, Barnes & Noble in July and Media Play (since closed) in November of that year. They brought over 40,000 square feet of sales space but few new customers, making it difficult for locally-owned bookstores to survive. Mike's bookstore, in the heart of downtown, soon closed. Several other independent bookstores remain today, including Goerings and Book Gallery West. |
