below the 800 tool contour). In this area thle overlying Sand-and-Gravel aquifer
yields quantities of water sufficient for most uses, but it is mildly corrosive on
pipes and fittings
Ihe I loridan aquifer as designated by Parker in 1955 includes limestone
from parts or all of tile middle I ocene, the upper I ocene, the Oligocene, and tilhe
Miocene Series. The top of tihe I loridan aquifer in northwest I iorida is defined
here as thie uppermost water-bearing hmestone yielding sufficient quantities of
water to be economically important. In some instances tile surface mapped may
include less consolidated sediments immediately overlying the limestone which is
hydraulically connected.
This map represents the upper surface of tlhe I loridan aquifer. It does not
correspond to any particular geologic formation or age. Thie I loridan aquifer in
northwest I lorida consists of limestones and dolomites ranging in age from mid-
dle I ocene to Pliocene (deposited 45 to 1.5 million years ago), and of the
adjacent and overlying permeable sediments of younger ages which are in contact
with thie carbonate rocks.
Recharge of tle I loridan aquifer in this area occurs primarily in south-
eastern Alabama and southwestern (Georgia where ihe limestone is close to tie
surface. Local recharge occurs where tie limestone is sufficiently near the sur-
face so that the aquifer is recharged by direct rainfall, and through sinkholes
and/or lakes which breach the overlying confining beds. Natural discharge occurs
at springs and rivers whose elevations intersect tire local potentiometric surfaces
of thie I loridan aquifer.
Locally thie elevation of the aquifer may vary from tihe map. especially
where the limestone had been exposed by solution, leading to thie development
of karst features prior to deposition of overlying sediments.
