Celebrating Christmas with first-gradersBy Barbara WhiteSundance ParkSundance Park Womens Club, Zephyrhills on CR 54 started the Christmas season on Monday, Dec. 12, enjoying firstgraders from West Zephyrhills Elementary. They did a beautiful job in singing and acting the 12 days of Christmas and several other Christmas songs. The children were led by teachers Mrs. Kesler and Mrs. Miller. Becky Bishop, parental involvement coordinator, and Principal Mrs. Keene also helped with the children. INSIDE XMAS TOURNAUGHTY OR NICE 7 10 11 19MRS. HUNTERS RUN By Karen MayHunters RunResidents of Hunters Run dug deep into their pockets this season to raise funds to purchase bikes for the Toys for Tots program, under the supervision of the Gold Wing Cycle organization. On Monday morning, Tommy Petrucci made the announcement that more than $1,200 had been raised to purchase bikes for east Pasco youths. Tommy and Mary Iaia organized the drive for funds, which ended this week. Tommys wife Deb went door to door so all residents could participate and park sales took place to help the fundraiser. In addition, manager Cliff and Penny Popours granddaughter, Chelsea, sang and presented a Christmas program earlier, with all funds going to this project. The final presentation on Monday had representatives of the Gold Wing group picking up 25 bicycles, a huge amount of toys and additional money for the program. Social workers and teachers will have the opportunity to select three toys for each of the needy youngsters, which this year numbers 1,100-plus.Hunters Run residents have also collected over $550 and gift cards, which were presented to Pastor Randy Lawrence of the True Life Church in Zephyrhills, which will go to help needy families at Christmas and also help purchase items in the church food pantry. The residents of Hunters Run have done themselves proud in giving to the less fortunate in the true meaning of Christmas! From left, Tommy Petrucci, Cliff Popour, Mary Iaia and two members of the Gold Wing Cycle group all helped east Pasco youths have a more enjoyable Christmas this year. The hall was decorated in a Christmas theme. The meeting began as usual with the Pledge of Allegiance led by club president, Sara Lawson. There was discussion about some of the recent activities that the Womens Club sponsored. The Christmas Bazaar was enjoyed by not only our residents, but by many from the Zephyrhills/Dade City areas. The Womens Club meeting then continued recognizing several ladies with December birthdays and anniversaries. There were some ladies mentioned that are on the sick list. Some of the upcoming events will be the Health Fair, being held on Tuesday, Jan. 17, and the style show that will be on March 24. After the meeting, the ladies went to Sandy Wymans home to enjoy the beautiful Christmas decorations and refreshments. We wish to thank Sandy for her hospitality. Our Womens Club, along with the help of many Sundance Park residents, regularly collects canned and packaged foods to be donated to the Neighborhood Care Center and also items for the West Zephyrhills pre-k children. He surprised the kids with bags donated and decorated by members of the Womens Club. Santa Claus surprised the children with his appearance, surprising the children with gift bags that were donated and decorated by Womens Club ladies. These bags contained a color book, a box of crayons and a beanie baby. We want to also thank Luther Monkelien for donating the 40 beanie babies that were included in the childrens Christmas bags. The children took orange juice back to school to enjoy later. The children enjoy coming to visit us as much as we enjoy having them. It surely made all of us grandmas homesick for our grandkids, but it sure put us in the Christmas mood. We have an ongoing support to the children of West Zephyrhills Elementary so this is one way that the children feel that they can give back to us.CHRISTMAS, from page 1

CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER/PARK NEWS December 28, 2011 7 GRAND HORIZONS By Helene RubensteinGrand HorizonsThis is the season for fun, excitement and giving. It is the time of year that most people look forward to and this year proves to be no exception. We started off this season at Grand Horizons with a luncheon in the community center on Dec. 6. This is slightly different from years gone as it was originally arranged by Carolyn Smart and it was for Everyday Blessings. This is a nonprofit organization that does a lot for foster children and sibling groups who have been removed from their homes. Everyday Blessings tries to keep them together in addition to giving emotional support and more. It was a nice turnout of approximately 40 people. The women, from our community, joined together for a potluck luncheon and also to recognize this organization with monetary donations, canned goods and toys for tots. The money collected from this group was in honor of Carolyn Smarts memory, the kind and generous person who started this luncheon. The function started off very nicely, for when we approached our seats, a lovely pin and a candy cane awaited us. This was a very nice touch and the pin was lovely. They were made by Joyce Bell and Robbie Lockard. According to what Joyce and Robbie said, they were fun to make and I must add that they did a terrific job. Thank you, Robbie and Joyce, from all of us. There were many volunteers and they all did a fine job. There were several volunteers to help make this function run smoothly. Volunteers such as Mim Gardner, Rosemary Semian, Marie Paolantonio and, I am sure, many more. A delicious cake was provided and the many different dishes that were made by the different people. A presentation was made by Joyce Bell thanking everyone who helped make this party a victory for Carolyn Smarts memory. The following day, Dec. 7, a surprise party was held at Sonnys BBQ for our past president of the HOA, Dick Charron. Andy and Margaret Castonguay, Judy and Jim Fischer and Bob and Marilyn Webb were volunteers for this event. Approximately 70-80 people were there to honor Dick for all his endeavors to get our new community center. He did a fine job and deserved this little party in his honor. There were many cards thanking Dick for all his work. Rebecca Gaddis, VP area branch manager from community savings bank, presented Dick with a plaque, on behalf of the East Pasco Resident Owned Community Association (EPROC). After completion of our meal, Charlie Apjohn gave a little speech and told a few humorous stories about Dick. We werent finished yet as after Charlie was through, Wayne Bloomfield said a few words also. Then a large and beautiful cake was brought out while several pictures were taken. All in all, it was a very nice party and deservedly so. That Saturday, Dec. 10, we had egg n bag in the community center and there were close to 70 people. We always enjoy this event and, once again, we were not let down. The tables were called in a random order and, even with all the people, we were through relatively early. The potatoes were delicious and the omelet was done perfectly. Everyone had the ingredients that they wanted and we spent the time with good company. Marty and I never tire of this event and look forward to it each and every month. The egg n bag was hosted by Dave and Linda Tutin and they had several volunteers to help that included Karen and Bill Donlon along with Chris and Rich Fulton and Jerry and Chris Buckley. Linda asked one thing of everyone and that was that if they wanted to go that they should purchase their tickets several days in advance so it would enable her to do the shopping that was necessary. We are not through with the day, as at 6:30 p.m. a parade of golf carts (all decorated) circled the park and went through every street in the development. There were 21 carts that made the ride and they started to line up at 6. There were four winners and, from what I was told, trophies that were donated by Andy and Margaret Castonguay were given to the winners. After the parade, the 70 members that attended were treated to hot chocolate, cookies and other assorted goodies. Carols were also sung and everyone had a good time. On Dec. 15, there were about 20 women having a good time at the Blackstones for a holiday lunch. They were each greeted with a little happy holiday gift from the two women putting on the luncheon, Donna Dawes and Helene Rubenstein. Each person also brought a gift for exchange and this was much fun as, when opening each present, oohs and ahs rang through the restaurant. There was a variety to choose from on the menu and one meal sounded better than the other. We finally decided on what to have and each individual was content with their meal and the afternoon. The fact that everyone got along made this luncheon so good. Dick and Fay Charron enjoy the atmosphere at Sonnys BBQ, where Dick was thanked and honored by Grand Horizons for his volunteer work. Ernie Rice sits with his dog, Angel, on a hotrod-themed golf cart during Grand Horizons golf cart parade. (Photos courtesy of Helene Rubenstein) Blessings, parties at Grand HorizonsRosemary Semian and Barbara Janelle display the gifts they received at a Dec. 20 holiday party at Blackstones. Chick and Annmarie Shackewyc ride around in one of the 21 decorated golf carts for a parade that circled the residence and went through every street in Grand Horizons.

By Jim MorvatzSouthforkAs a charitable Christmas project, Southforks Womens Club recently delivered more than 600 pounds of canned and boxed food to the Day Star Hope Center of Pasco County located on the northern edge of Dade City. Using cloth bags donated by Walmart and T.J. Maxx, members of the Southfork club shopped from a prepared list of needed items to fill 26 bags to capacity for the project. The items were sorted and then placed in the bags for delivery to the Day Star facility. Each bag contained enough groceries to provide several meals for a needy family.Sister Jean Abbott, director of the Day Star facility stated that the facilitys mission statement is to provide food items and other emergency services to families in need from the eastern section of Pasco County. She also explained that the facility accepts donations in the form of clothing, household goods, sporting goods and any other tenderly used items. These donated items are sold through the facility to provide funds so that the facility also has the means to purchase more food and to provide other means of assistance to deserving families.Sister Abbott relayed a message stating that a young family man had picked up some food items on the day of this interview and upon leaving the store a Day Star clerk had wished the young man a Merry Christmas and he replied while leaving, Yes it will be now that I have food for my family. (Photo by Jim Morvatz) By Jim MorvatzSouthforkDue to waning interest in Southforks Annual Golf Cart Christmas Parade, a new tack was taken concerning a Christmas celebration. There were 48 Southfork residents who came to the clubhouse to enjoy our 2011 Christmas show. Jolly Joe Koziol, a Southfork resident and former professional entertainer, started the program with several Christmas stylings on his new digital accordion. Then the master of ceremonies took the stage to entertain the audience with some Christmas jokes and anecdotes. A little later, five members from the audience were cajoled to come to the stage for an impromptu question-and-answer session concerning their family Christmas traditions, best gift received and their fondest memories of Christmases past. The answers and comments to the questions from the five members of the panel brought both smiles and tears as others in the assembly thought about their own Christmases past. The last question to the panel was about their favorite Christmas carols, and after that Jolly Joe favored the audience with his rendition of those carols and encouraged the guests to sing along. When the singing stopped, the attendees were treated to coffee, hot chocolate, Christmas cookies and other Christmas treats. Following another short musical interlude, Santa Claus magically appeared and passed out gifts from the gift exchange items. Many ladies (and men) were seen sitting on Santas lap and trying to bribe him into a nicer Christmas gift. The party ended with another short round of music and a thank you from the association president to anyone who had volunteered or attended to help the make the event another Southfork success.Southfork Womens Club deliversChristmas comes to Southfork Sandi Bartoszek wasnt the only one trying to bribe Santa Claus into giving a nicer gift. Closer LookAN ADVERTISER PROFILE Lutz roots run deep in the Ierna family and are about to get deeper with the February opening of a new office and warehouse for Iernas Heating & Cooling. Eight years after the business moved from the family home to a 1,200-square-foot rented building on US 41 in downtown Lutz, owners Ron and Charlene Ierna are tripling their space with the purchase and complete overhaul and renovation of a landmark building a few blocks south. For more than 20 years, the 4,800 squarefoot building was home to Myree Chiropractic Clinic. For many years it also housed a State Farm Insurance agency and before then Barnett Bank. The buildings nostalgic legacy has been preserved by the Iernas, who have incorporated the banks original vault into their buildings new lay out.We are probably the only A/C company in the country with a bank vault in its office, laughed Charlene. But we think its important to honor the buildings historical relevance by keeping the vault in tact. After buying the building last summer, the Iernas gutted it and began transforming it into offices and parking for their 35 employees and 19 trucks. A warehouse is being added to the back of the building and will house a large inventory of replacement parts and new air conditioning and heating units. The building includes an oversized conference room with a 72-inch, wall-mounted television that will be used for employee training and customer presentations. When employees are not using this room, it will be available to community groups at no charge. Weve taken our time with the renovations because we want them done right, said Charlene. Were adding many upgrades to make the building as comfortable and functional as possible for our employees and customers. Land O Lakes contractor Dave Boger has been hired to complete the buildings exterior work, which is the next stage of the renovation. The new exterior will dramatically update the buildings look and improve Lutzs downtown streetscape. Weve needed a larger office for a long time, said Charlene, but our goal was always to stay in Lutz. This is our home and we waited to move until the right opportunity came along. Keeping their business in Lutz also means keeping their business close to home. The couple has lived in the house Ron grew up in on Deer Lake since they were married in 2003. Their oldest daughter attends Lutz Elementary, as did her father, just ablock away from the new office. The couple also has two preschool-aged children.Since the Iernas started their company in 2003, it has doubled in size every year. They attribute their success to superior customer service, committed and talented employees and a core business value to give back to the community. We try to support just about every worthwhile group that asks for a donation, said Charlene. The Ierna logo is seen on everything from softball t-shirts to the penguin exhibit at The Florida Aquarium. From equipment donations, to money, to free services, we continue to give back, said Ron. Not only is this great for our community, but our employees feel good working for a company that truly cares and makes a difference in the community where we live and raise our children." On Feb. 18, Iernas is hosting a community party to celebrate the renovation and opening of its new building. Christened Beat The Heat, the event will include a Chili Cook Off and many other fun family activities. We plan to make Beat the Heat an annual event, said Charlene. It is exciting to finally have a location large enough to host a community event for the Lutz community, which has been so supportive of our business. 813-948-6355 www.IernaAir.comLicensed/Bonded/Insured CAC1813676 Charlene and Ron IernaIernas Heating & Cooling triples space CnewsPubs.com / 813-909-2800 THE LAKER/PARK NEWS December 28, 2011 11 $500 OFFEXP 12/31/11Pair of Oticon Pair of Oticon Intiga Hearing Intiga Hearing Aids Aids Pair of Oticon Intiga Hearing Aids DECEMBER SPECIAL0% Financing Options Available!Locations in Wesley Chapel & Zephyrhills813.929.6673 www.WesleyChapelENT.com Brett M. By Lee HeffelfinerGem EstatesThe Christmas Holiday Season is in full swing once again and the park is really pretty with all the lights and tinsel. The men that decorated the entrance to the park did a great job of it and the ladies had so much fun doing the clubhouse interior. We got a new Christmas tree this year thanks to Joe and Ann Casey. Several people on our sick list need our prayers: George Barrington, Bernice Edwards and Sylvia Helm.Lots of birthdays during December as well as anniversaries; Ann and Joe Casey, John and Tita Mauk as well as Helen and Ed Goodreault. Best wishes to these couples. Norman and Dorothy Fenton bought the house on Dundee Road owned by John and Sue Bowens and it is located next door to her sister, Neva Roy and brother, Leroy, while their friends, Bill and Carolyn Mayer bought the Taffner property on Sterling Drive. Doesnt seem like property stays vacant very long. Learned that Flossie oBeay, a former resident of Gem Estates, has celebrated her 98th birthday on Dec. 17. What an honor to be in Flossies company. Very upbeat personality. Larry Keith has really kept the park common grounds mowed and trimmed all summer and has been removing grass and overgrown weeds in time for the Christmas parties. Saturday, Dec. 17 we saw a golf cart and bicycle parade of our residents here in the park. Didnt know we had so many golf carts in the park and we really enjoyed the parade. The first Pancake breakfast for this season is a success as usual. Good, good food. Its always nice to be served a great meal and not have to do the dishes or clean up the kitchen afterward. Had a good turnout for Shuffle Boardthats what those courts are forto be used. We can still use some more people. The Jolly Gems of Gem Estates will be celebrating their Christmas with a get together at 1 p.m. at the Red Rose Inn, in Plant City on Jan. 3 with a $10 gift exchange and if you need more information about this party and for any newcomers to Gem Estates that want to join the Red Hats, call Loretta Green, Queen Mother at (813) 782-9033. She tells me there are more exciting events coming up to take place in 2012. Call her and find out how you can join in with the Red Hats. The Jolly Gems Red Hat group hosted a memorial luncheon for Sally Phillips. Sally was an avid fan of Gem Estates and its activities serving in one capacity or another as second vice president and board member. She was the Sunshine lady and handled the subscription for the Tampa Tribune. Sally and her husband, John, were married 52 years and had two daughters and one son, three granddaughters and one grandson. She had an infectiously beautiful smile and was very helpful to all. The girls in the Red Hat group will certainly miss her as we all shall. Sally Phillips passed on July 26,2011.Lynn and Deann Harrington had a great visit from their son and daughter-in-law Steve and Diane Harrington from Jasper, Georgia. Just a reminder: The park-wide yard sale coming on Saturday, Jan. 7. The driveways are crowded with all kinds of bargains and goodies, so bring your walking shoes and get here early to get fabulous buys. Also the following week, Saturday, Jan. 14, we have our clubhouse yard sale, where you will find more bargains conveniently centered at one place. Youll find coffee and doughnuts for sale in the morning as well as soup and sandwiches at lunch time. Mark the dates, Jan. 7 and Jan. 14 on your calendar. We wish them well. Welcome back to our Rainbow Village family for a very exciting new season. We started out with new staff in the office, Nancy and Butch Boucher replacing Russ and Linda Bower who recently got married, retired and wanted to see the United States. Best wishes to the both of them! Around Thanksgiving we had a food drive for Meals on Wheels chaired by Nancy Pollock. They had a pickup truck full of food and a generous donation of money given by the residents of Rainbow. Meals on wheels also got a generous donation from Rainbow Village Church and also the association. They also received more than 50 dozen cookies that were gathered at our Christmas cookie exchange chaired by Judy Lykins and Ellie Sawyer. Our big event to start off the Christmas season was our Christmas Bazaar chaired by Sue Larkin and Sue Flynn. We had 26 vendors, clothing and rummage sale, visit from Mr. and Mrs. Santa, bake sale and good food. Fun was had by all who attended. The annual Evie McManns Christmas tea, chaired by Nancy Pollack, was a big success. This event has been going on annually since 1971 when Evie served tea and cookies from her small trailer. She died in 1977 and Sue Flynn, park manager, took over the tea as a nice memorial to Evie. The theme was things to do with sewing. Emergency sewing kits were made by Lorna Grassley, aprons made by Nancy Pollack and Sue Larkin were door prizes. Ladies donated items to the Sunrise Battered and Abused Women of Pasco county and Toys for Tots. Food was delicious. Well done ladies! Rainbow hosted the Gold Wing motorcycle riders. Residents donated four bikes and tons of toys. They were greeted by our residents as they rode up and down our decorated streets and then served cookies and drinks. The riders had the motorcycles decorated with Christmas lights and decorations. Beautiful sight to behold! Upcoming events are putting out luminaries at each unit, Christmas caroling, Christmas eve church service and social after church service. Busy season! Horseshoes, shuffling and bocci are all up and running for the season. Quilting ladies are meeting and some are going to make jackets, lap quilts, pocket books and many other things. Tickets are now on sale for our upcoming shows at Rainbow. On Wednesday, Jan. 11, Wil Yancy; Wednesday, Jan. 25, Steve Jeffris show; Wednesday, Feb. 8, Chris Michaels show, Wednesday, Feb. 22, The Browns; Wednesday, March 7, Joe and Jan Edwards; Friday, March 16, Scott Woods. Tickets are $7 each. Call Sue Flynn at (813) 782-5075 for tickets. We wish you all a blessed Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! By Anne Astles Leisure Days RV ParkAlthough many have only been back for a few weeks, residents of Leisure Days have been busy making items for people in the Zephyrhills area. During the week of Dec. 11, more than 100 items were donated to local organizations, including the Pregnancy Care Centre, Hospice, nursing homes and the homeless. This has been a park-wide project. The Busy Hands group crocheted, knit or cro-hooked afghans, lap robes, shawl, baby afghans hats, and slippers. Many of the items were created over the summer and the work continued as workers arrived at the park for the season. Baby quilts, pillows and lap robes made from fabric were also part of the donations. The material for the quilts was donated by one of the residents of Leisure Days and women worked together with their sewing machines to make the items in time to have them delivered for Christmas. Two local families had a brighter Christmas, thanks to the generosity of the residents of Leisure Days RV Park. The two families adopted by the park received gifts for the children and food for the family. The items were all donated by Leisure Days residents.
