Lesson Plan: Haitian Independence

Students will construct a timeline of Haitian independence.

Time Needed:

40 minutes

Lesson Goals and Objectives
Students will analyze the independence movement in Haiti by creating a timeline and comparing
it to American independence.

SSS: SS.B.1.3.1: Understands the world in spatial terms.

SS.B.2.3.5: Understands the geographical factors that affect the cohesiveness and integration of

SS.A.3.3.2: Understands the historical events that have shaped the development of cultures
throughout the world.

After the United States declared independence in 1776, Haiti became the second independent
country in the Americas in 1804. The independence movements in each country were much
different from one another.

Target Audience
Middle or High School Social Studies

Required Materials
Pre-quiz, Online encyclopedia (Grolier's, wikipedia, etc),, Haitian Revolution
instruction sheet.

Teaching Activities
Bell Assignment: Complete the pre-quiz about the Haitian Revolution
Haitian Revolution Timeline
- Today, we're going to learn about the independence movement in Haiti.
- You are going to accomplish this by creating a timeline online.
- Open Internet Explorer and go to and login.
- You are going to use this website to create a timeline explaining the events that lead up to and
followed the Haitian Revolution.
- You need to describe the 7 most important events that led up to the Haitian Revolution, the date
of independence, and the 7 most important events that followed the Haitian Revolution.
- You will therefore have a total of 15 events.
- Each event must have a title, a picture, and at least 1 sentence describing it.
- Of the pictures, you need to include a map of the Caribbean, with Haiti labeled, and a map of
Europe, with France labeled.
- Before you begin, here is how a sample timeline should look.

- Open up a new window in Internet Explorer. Go to
- You are going to use this online encyclopedia to research the Haitian Revolution.
- Write down the year and describe the event on your worksheet. Then when you have written
all 15 dates, search for pictures and create your online timeline.
Haitian Revolution vs. American Revolution
- Now that you have learned about the Haitian Revolution, you will compare it to the American
- Write 2 paragraphs comparing these 2 revolutions. Be sure to identify the countries involved,
the time period, world's reaction and the reason for revolution.
- Once you are done writing your paragraphs, answer the questions on the Post-quiz.
- Create a 10-event timeline about Europeans first arrival on Hispaniola.
- Create a 10-event timeline of the Dominican Republic's independence movement.

Grading Assessment
- Haitian Revolution Timeline and Haitian Revolution vs. American Revolution paragraphs.
- Who was the leader of the Haitian Revolution?
- Why did Haiti want independence?
- Who did they win independence from?
- How was Haiti's revolution similar and different from the US revolution?
