Finance Minister's death

slows commercial activities

COMMtRCIAL activities
slumped in the country yes-
terday as Trinidad and To-
bago mourned the death of
Dr. Eric Williams, Prime
Minister of the country for
25 years.
A Central Bank release or-
dered all banks to be closed
and many customers, hop-

ing to cash month-end che-
ques, found themselves
locked out under flags flying
at half mast.
Dr. Williams was also
Minister of Finance and on
his death no official trading
could have taken place until
a new Minister of Finance
had been appointed.

Trading returned to
normal today, however,
following the appointment
of Mr. George Chambers as
Minister of Finance. Mr.
Chambers also took up the
post of Prime Minister at a
formal swearing in
ceremony yesterday,
In addition, normal busi-
ness activities requiring
banking procedures were
put aside until banks re-
open today.
Downtown Port of Spain
merchants reported slow
sales, some attributing the
slump to the closure of the
banks but others insisting
that people were much too

pre-occupied with Dr. Wil-
liams' death to bother ab-
out buying anything.
A few stores closed their
doors as a mark of respect
and some businessmen said
that while they wanted to
close they were uncertain
as what other businessmen
were doing. Several other
stores owners said that
they would close on the day
of Dr. Williams' funeral.
But While most stores ex-
perienced a drop in sales,
grocery stores and eating
places maintained normal
activity. One grocery owner
said "No matter what hap-
pens people have to eat so
we are continuing as usual."
