Example to inspire Caribbean Seaga

JAMAICA Prime Minister Edward Seaga said in Kingston yesterday that Dr. Eric Williams,
the Trinidad arid Tobago Prime Minister who died Sunday night, had set an example which
would inspire the Caribbean people to greater unity and independence.

He was paying glowing tribute to the scholar-politician following announcement of the death
in Port-of-Spain by President Ellis Clarke.

Mr. Seaga said Dr. Williams, 69, had been one of the most outstanding political leaders in
the region in the post-war years. He said Dr. Williams as the creator of party political
activity in the modern sense in Trinidad and Tobago.

"To us in the Caribbean, Dr. Williams will also be remembered for his vision of a United
Caribbean, based on its history and experience," he said.

Mr. Seaga said that Dr. Williams had always been held in high regard by successive
Jamaican Governments.

FROM BURNHAM

In Georgetown, Guyana's President Forbes Burnham said Dr. Williams would always be
remembered for "His leadership and monumental contribution to politics and scholarship"

In a message to President Ellis Clarke, President Burnham said he was deeply shocked by
the news of the death of Dr. Williams.

"You in Trinidad and Tobago and we in the Caribbean have lost a statesman, scholar and
tutor." Mr. Burnham said and added, "Bill (sic., Dr.) Williams was a personal friend of mine
and of Guyana through all times."

AND ADAMS

Barbados Prime Minister, Tom Adams, bemoaned the loss of his Trinidad and Tobago
counterpart, and in a telegram sent to Port of Spain, said: "Dr. Williams will be remembered
as a statesman and scholar of the highest stature whose efforts in the realm of Caribbean
nationhood ... and development have made a profound impact throughout the Caribbean.

"His death will be all the more acutely felt in Barbados as we reflect on the very close and
friendly relations that exist between our two countries.

"The government and people of Barbados join me to expressing our heartfelt sympathies to
you and the people of Trinidad and. Tobago on this sad occasion."
