While activity at the airport plunged
by 11.4% with 18,500 fewer passen-
gers in 2009 than in 2008, the port
did better last year, reporting an
increase of 2.71% linked to cruise
ship passengers (+12.37%). And in
spite of the fact that there were a
total of 283,000 passengers at the
airport (arrivals and departures com-
bined), 2009 remains one of the
worst years for tourism in Saint
Barth since 1996, as was true global-
ly. The number of commercial
flights was also down here by
11.28% dipping from 34,160 in 2008
to 30,308 in 2009.

Low Numbers
In High Season
In this bleak scenario, the results
varied depending on the season.
Other than the month of April (-
5.47%), the six first months of the
year saw an important drop in
tourists, higher than the annual aver-
age decrease of 11.4%. Things were
bleakest in February with a record
drop of 23.92%, while between Jan-
uary and June the airport experi-
enced a loss of 17,770 passengers
out of the total 18,500 lost in 2009
compared to 2008...

On the other hand, the low season
held the winning hand, with an
increase of 3.14% in July, 4.14% in
October, and 2.38% in November for
a total gain of approximately 1,000
passengers compared to the same
period in 2008. Yet this increase did
not continue: In December 2009
there was a 9.7% drop in the number
of passengers at the airport (13,381
people) compared to December 2008
(14, 818 people), which already rep-
resented an 11% drop in relation to
2007. In January 2010, the decrease
accelerated: the first month of the
year saw a reduction of 19.7% com-
pared to January 2009, which had
experienced a dip of 18.7% from
2008. This does not bode well for
the high season in 2010, but are
things worse here than elsewhere?
Hard to say, as even the veteran
tourism professionals agree that it's
hard to predict more than a month
ahead even in the best of times.

Air Traffic Decreases
Without trying to minimize the
importance of the decrease in pas-
sengers at the airport in 2009, it is
interesting to make a comparison to

the global situation last year. There
was a significant drop "without
precedent since the Second World
War," according to Mr. Bisignani,
director of the International Air
Transport Association (IATA).
Regional air traffic did not fare any
better, recording a similar decrease
to the one in Saint Barth, according
to Eugene Holiday, president of
Princess Juliana Airport in Sint
Maarten, who estimates an 8 to 12%
drop in passengers during 2009.

Ernest Brin, director
of the Port of Gustavia

In contrast to the airport,
the Port of Gustavia has
reported a 2.71% boost in
activity compared to 2008.
This is primarily due to a
significant increase in the
number of cruise ship pas-
sengers (+12.37%), but
also a growth in the num-
ber of motor yachts and
large sailboats. Although
2009 finished with a 7.9%
decrease in the number of

passengers (31,834 com-
pared to 34,564 in 2008)
and a 5.7% drop in the
number of boats (4,698 in
2009 against 4,986 in
2008), since the month of
November 2009 there has
been a constant upsurge in
the number of yachts:
+28.43% in November
with 393 compared to 306
in 2008; and +4.63% in
December with 611 against
584 the year before. Janu-
ary 2010 has followed suit,
with 671 boats in the port
and only 650 in January
2009 (+3.23%).
As far as ferries are con-
cerned, compared to the air
traffic between Juliana and
Saint Barth, which
decreased by 10.17%, the
number of ferry passengers

between the two islands
saw a slight increase of
1.97%, from 42,477 in
2008 to 47,732 in 2009, in
spite of a reduction in the
number of actual ferry
arrivals, which dropped
from 2,303 in 2008 to
2,244 in 2009. This rise in
passengers proves that the
boats have scooped up part
of the air traffic to St Barth.
One reason might well be
the price of airplane tickets

from Juliana to Gustav III
airport in Saint Barth, or
the lack of airline seats on
certain critical days during
the high season.
Finally, the number of
cruise ships has gone up by
+12.37% with 60,264 pas-
sengers in port during 2009
compared to 59,100 in
2008, even in spite of 10
cancellations between
December 28 and 31 due to
bad weather.

Open since December 5,
2009, the recent extension
of DeBruyn Hospital in
Gustavia was officially
inaugurated on Thursday,
January 5. With a total sur-
face of 1000 square meters
(10,000 sq ft.) on two lev-
els, the new building hous-
es 12 rooms for patients,
six of which are private.
The ground floor consists
of a pharmacy, technical
services, and archives.
During the inauguration,
hospital director Pierre
Nuty indicated that the sec-
ond phase of construction
should begin "as early as
next month." Phase two
includes the renovation of

the original building to
comprise two consulting
rooms for doctors, a laun-
dry, a multi-purpose room
for physical therapy and
preparation for childbirth,
locker rooms for the staff, a
chapel, a meeting room,
administrative offices, and
space for a scanner in the
President Bruno Magras
noted that on his part, he
was happy to attend the
inauguration of an institu-
tion that is "useful, indis-
pensable for the popula-
tion," and for which the
support of the Collectivity
is not only "natural, but
also a moral obligation."

Jean-Baptiste Barre, founder and
owner of Absolutely Wine in Grand
Fond, came up with the idea of a
week's activities designed to intro-
duce the concept of biodynamic viti-
culture in Saint Barth. Taking place
from February 9-14, and organized in
conjunction with the associations
Gofits et Saveurs and WI.S.S.E, this
oenological event will host four wine
growers from France who have
adopted biodynamic methods to pro-
duce organic vintages. Founded in
1924, this agricultural production
system stems from the ideas and phi- JeanBa
losophy of anthroposophist Rudolf Absolut
Steiner, and is a holistic approach to soil by over extend
growing grapes. Biodynamic growers "Biodynamic viney

In addition to the quality of their
wines, he also admires the persever-
ance of these viticulturists: "If some-
thing goes wrong, an entire harvest
can be lost. You really have to believe
in this," adds the sommelier who
decided to organize this event to help
promote these wines that he thinks are
very interesting (see inset): "Here, a
lot of different kinds of wine are con-
sumed... Bordeaux, Burgundy, Pinot
Noir... My challenge as a sommelier
is to introduce these vineyards that
are doing something exceptional.
This is the case for the four wine
growers who will be featured during
this event. In addition, since many
people are buying and consuming an
increasing number of organic prod-
ucts, it seems appropriate to introduce
Saint Barth to the concept of biody-
namic wine, which has become popu-
lar elsewhere but is still pretty much
unknown here."

The schedule for the biodynamic wine
week includes a session open to the

public, during which the wine grow-
ers will explain the basics of biody-
namic viticulture, and talk about the
specific wines they will offer during
the tasting that follow the confer-
ence. On Wednesday, February 10
and Thursday, February 11 at 6:00pm,
Absolutely Wine will host an open
house during which wine lovers can
taste biodynamic bottles and meet the
wine growers, who, according to
Jean-Baptiste Barre "will be happy to
share their passion for their wine with
as large an audience as possible." In
addition, on five evenings from Tues-
day through Saturday, a dinner with
wine tasting will be organized in a
different restaurant on the island.

Each menu will be crafted in consulta-
tion with the chefs in order to perfectly
pair the cuisine with these subtle, sur-
prising, and unusual wines. Each
evening is the perfect occasion to dis-
cover three to six different wines made
by the four viticulturists. Wine tasting
are also on the program at 5:00pm on
Friday, February 12 at Do Brazil on
Shell Beach.
