The First Guanahani Resort & Spa

Literary Prize

WELCOME!
The St. Barth
Weekly is happy to
be back for its
fourth season. The
Weekly is designed
to help you put your
finger on the pulse
of the local commu-
nity. Featuring an
English r6sum6 of
the top stories in
our French newspa-
per, Le Journal de
Saint Barth, as well
as original articles
in English, The St.
Barth Weekly is the
only completely
English-language
newspaper on the
island. It is distribu-
ted on the island
every week from
November through
the end of July. Our
most exciting news
is that each Friday,
The Weekly is also
available online at
Saint Barth Online
(www.st-
barths.com), the
wonderful web site
launched in 1996,
and now run by our
friends Bruno and
Geraldine Colletas.
Thanks to them,
you can download
every edition of The
St. Barth Weekly, so
that no matter
where you are in the
world, you can stay
in touch with your
favorite island.

From May 30 to June 3,
the Guanahani Resort
& Spa will set the
stage for the first literary
prize given in the name of
this luxury hotel located on
Grand Cul de Sac. Yet it is
not just a whim of vanity.
The prize was created by
the director of the hotel,
Marc Thez6, but the name
"Guanahani Literary Prize"
came from a book that was
published in November
2006, when French
.uilhl,! t!i. iliili Catherine
Siguret came out with her
last book, "Je vous aime."
The plot tells the story of a
30 year-old Parisian woman
and a successful writer, with
a scene set during the
awarding of the Guanahani
Literary Prize...
Marc Theze jumped at the
chance. When he read the
book, he decided to make the
fictional version of the prize
a reality, and the first edition
of the event will take place
from Wednesday, May 30
through Sunday, June 3, with
the winner chosen by a jury
of celebrities from the world
of French literature and
media with the famous
French TV announcer Patrick
Poivre d'Arvor from TF1 as
president. The jury will meet
in Saint Barth at the Guana-
hani to select the best
romance novel out of five

DOUCHY, THE OLDEST

WOMAN IN GUADELOUPE

ug6nie Blanchard,
known as
"Douchy," is now
the oldest woman living in
all the islands of Guade-
loupe, since Mathilda
Albina n6e Tafna passed
away in an old age home
in Raizet (Guadeloupe) on
May 1. Douchy may also
be the oldest woman in all
the French West Indies, a
title previously held by
Mathilde Albina, who was
the fourth oldest woman
in France. A response
from Inserm, which holds
the records for the oldest
people in France, is
expected within days.
Douchy, who is bedridden,
has lived at the De Bruyn
hospital in Saint Barth
since 1980, and celebrated
her lllth birthday last
February 16. She is now
among the "super-cente-
naries," a title given to
those who live past 110

years.
A former nun, Douchy
was born on February 16,
1896 in Merlet. She has
serious hearing and vision
impairments but can still
say a few words that only
certain members of the
hospital staff can under-
stand. Yet she remains in
good overall health and
does not receive any spe-
cific medical treatment.
Her 12 brothers and sisters
are all deceased.
Born Eug6nie Blanchard,
she took the name of Sis-
ter Cyria Costa when she
took her vows in Curacao.
She says the nickname
"Douchy" comes from a
childhood use of the word
"dulce" which means
"sweet" in Spanish.
Exiled for 33 years in the
capital of the Dutch West
Indies, Douchy returned
to Saint Barth when she
was almost 60. She lived
in a small cottage built
using materials from the
family house in Merlet
until she was 84. Almost
blind, she moved into the
local hospital where she
has lived ever since.
Douchy is not the only
person older than 100 at
the hospital: Since 1985,
Irmise Romney, who was
104 last February 20, has
lived there as well.

DELAY IN IMPROVING A SEPTIC

SYSTEM CAUSES
ince it was created in
January 2006, the
communal service
concerned with sewage
treatment has been working
to bring all existing residen-
tial systems up to norm, and
make sure that new con-
struction meets strict regula-
tions for the treatment of
gray water. This is a difficult
task but the service has been
able to help and negotiate
with residents. One excep-
tion is a homeowner in Saint
Jean against whom the
municipality has brought

LEGAL ACTION
legal action. The house in
question includes three
apartments yet has a septic
system that does not evacu-
ate enough gray water and
for several months has
caused gray water to run
onto neighboring properties
and into the street. Asked to
immediately stop such over-
flows and to improve the
septic system, the home-
owner has not yet done any-
thing about it. The mayor
decided to take legal action.
So far, the negligent party
has been fined 1950 euros.

Man Jumps From Voyager
At The Dock
No one knows why he did it, but a man aboard the Voyager
ferry suddenly jumped into the water last Sunday evening,
just as the boat was pulling into the dock. The witnesses were
speechless: "He just stood up, about 15 feet from the dock,
and jumped into the harbor," explained one witness. The
man swam to the dock where he was pulled out of the water.

Three Poachers Caught
In The Marine Park

The three poachers caught
on Sunday, May 6, on the
beach in Marigot, were
finally brought before the
police court where they will
plead their case for illegal
fishing on July 3. This is a
small victory for those who
try to protect the environ-
ment yet see frequent
offenses against nature not
always brought to justice.
On Sunday, May 6, the three
men were coming back from

fishing for sea snails, when
the guards of the Marine
Park caught them. The men
had collected 294 of these
univalve creatures near the
beach in Marigot, an area
within the protected zones of
the Marine Park, where the
capture of such snails is
strictly forbidden. The
poachers can be fined as
much as 1500 euros when
they appear before the
judge.

WINTER
SALES IN
SUMMER
They happen here
later than in France,
where the first annual
sales take place in
mid-January, but the
"winter" sales has
begun in full force in
Saint Barth on
Thursday, May 24,
and will last until
June 31. Many stores
have slashed prices by
30 to 50% and there
are plenty of good
buys. The second
annual sales period
will take place bet-
ween September 29
and October 27, 2006.

There's no math

the puzzle with rea-

SIt's addictive! "Fill in

So far, the negligent party has been fined 1950 euros. Douchy (right) and Irmise Romney (left) in 2006 during their joint birthday celebration.Three Poachers Caught In The Marine Park

4 4St Barth Weekly n¡122WINTER SALES IN SUMMERThey happen here later than in France, where the first annual sales take place in mid-January, but the "winter" sales has begun in full force in Saint Barth on Thursday, May 24, and will last until June 31. Many stores have slashed prices by 30 to 50% and there are plenty of good buys. The second annual sales period will take place between September 29 and October 27, 2006. She made it into the Guinness Book of Records in 2001 as the most pierced woman in the world, with a total (at the time) of 720 examples of piercing, 192 of which were on her face. Since then she has continued to add body piercing of every kind, and today has a total of 3,902 tattoos and piercing, including eight in her mouth. She guesses that the total weight of all this is over six pounds. In Saint Barth, where she spent several days on vacation last week, Elaine Davidson stood out of the crowd. For our photographer, she struck a famous pose that has already been published in numerous articles about her around the world: she put her little finger through her tongueÉ Ablack belt in judo, this former Brazilian nurse now lives in Edinburgh, Scotland. Now a fortune-teller and owner of the boutique, Tropical Rainbow, she got her first piercing in 1997. Accompanied by coach Jean-Marc Outil, 13 yearold Caroline Nicol, a seventh-grade student at Mireille Choisy Junior High, went to Chalons sur Sa™ne in France last weekend to participate in the junior French feminine swimming finals. Caroline returned with the title, Champion of France, based on a time of 36'37" for her 50-meter breaststroke. She pulverized her personal record, and that of this championship now in its third year, as well as turning in the best time in France so far this year. She also gave Saint Barth Natation its third Champion of France title. Caroline also qualified for the next level in the French championships, yet she will not participate for a good reason: the swimmers must be 17 years old. Caroline is only 13É.
