2 Breaking barriers of communication: Forging global network The University of Belize (UB) continues to play a key role in the promotion of education and culture in the removal of language barriers to enhance better regional communication and trade, said Minister of Trade, Investment Promotion, Private Sector Development and Consumer Protection, Hon. Erwin Contreras. President of the University of Belize, Dr. Cary Fraser in his remarks con gratulated the students for being Am bassadors of their respective coun tries and also on their achievement of learning a new language. President Fraser encouraged the students to use their enhanced language skills to continue their intellectual and professional growth. Such growth, he added, would contribute to the wider development of their societies. intensive language learning program. About RLC: The history of the Regional Language Centre began with English as a Second Language (ESL) program in 1978 at BELCAST, the Belize College of Arts, Science and Technology, which evolved into the University College of Belize in 1986. The English as a Second Language program was established in the early 1980s to facilitate economic integra tion and closer cooperation between countries of Central and Latin America and the Caribbean. These coun tries have students and professionals who want to learn English. The Regional Language Centre is also geared toward the English-speaking Caribbean whose students want to learn Spanish. Speaking to graduates of the Regional Language Centre (RLC) of UB; the Minister also declared that RLC is Belizes link with our neighbours and the region to foster integration, collaboration and cooperation in the economic, social, cultural, political and educational activities. 3 well done: Congrats to the graduating class of 2012 University. The Award of Academic Excellence in all Bachelor Degree Programs was presented to Ting Yu (Tiffany) Chao who scored a 3.99 GPA with a Bachelor of Science (B. Sc.) in Biology. The other overall achievers for all degree pro grams were Selvet Yaneli Chan, obtaining a 3.96 GPA, B. Sc. in Mathematics; and Emmanuel Clarence Young, earn ing a 3.93 GPA, B.Sc. in Biology. The Award of Academic Excellence in all Associate De gree Program was presented to Courtney Camille Weath erburne who earned the highest overall GPA score of 3.86 and graduated with a degree in English. And, the Award of Academic Diploma in Education Methodology program. The President of the University of Belize, Dr. Cary Fraser, in extending congratu lations to the graduates for their dedication, commitment and achievement, also took the opportunity to recognize the critical role of parents, guardians, family and friends, and the unwavering support they provided to the graduates during their edu cational journey. The Faculty with the highest number of graduates was the Faculty of Management & Social Sciences (FMSS) total GET INVOLVED UB is for all of us. Guest Speaker was the Senator Honourable Audrey Joy Grant, Minister of Energy, Science, Technology and Public Utilities. Together, you are expected to make a positive contribution to the betterment of each others lives and the lives of the people in your communities, said Minister Grant. You have been given the skills, the tools and the knowledge to succeed. Your graduation means that it is accomplishing its goal of extending educa tional access to larger numbers of citizens in the attempt to create a more equi table society in which motivation, the development of skills, and merit become the benchmarks of the societys progress as it seeks to transform its resources into agents of economic development, said Dr. Fraser.
