Mr. Robert Jaes, s'ublic Relations,
St. Au-uatin ',Histoical Restoration
and Preservwt on Afsiciation,
St. Augustine, Florida.
Some weeks ago, at your request, I agreed to go
through my old files in an effort to locate records which
relate to the original restoration effort under the sponsor-
ship of the C rne-ie Institution of Washington which was
made in St. Augustine during 1936 and 1937.
After considerable effort whtih consumed many hours
I have assembled some information which I have arranged
in chronological order. There are some gaps but the over
all account isrelaltively complete.
It is fortunate that I have located a copy of a
t&lk which I miae before the Art Club Association along
about 1945 or 1946 as it sums up the early activities of
the Carnegie restoration effort. Actually the participation
of the Carnegie Institution was mainly a research effort,
they had no pl-ns to do any restoration, Dr. Merriam said
that they wanted to show us the way.
I am pleased to be able to turn over to,you a complete
financial audit made by John R. Purcell of the entire period
from July 1, 1937 to February 11, 1942 together with all of
the cancelled checks and full accounting. As Treasurer
of the Corporation I counterdignedall of th. checks which
were drawn by Verne E. Chatelaine or one of his assistants.
Along with the records and cancelled checks there is a letter
signed by Mr. Purcell from whtdh I quote the last part-
graph." In my opinion, the record being returned to you here-
with, discloses that all funds expended during this period
have been properly accounted for and the record is correct."
I do not have record of the expenditure of the first
payment of -95,000. sent to us by the State, but I do have a
complete record of the remaining $45,000. which was pcid by
the State in 1945 or 1946. As will be seen by the record
all of this '45,000. plus contributions from the St. August-
ine Society and X. L. Pellicer. An audited report was sent to
the State Comptroller re the expenditure of the $5,000. but
I do not find a copy of the report
As stated to you over the telephone I would like to
have you make a copy of the talk I made before the Art Club.
I will keep looking and If I find other pertinent information
re the restoration I will send it to you. -
Co-} Sincerely yours. ) -x. L. Pellicer.
