Located at 20 Aviles Street, the Ximenez-Fatio House was
built between 1797 and 1802 by Andres Ximenez, a merchant
who operated his business on the property. One of the oldest
houses in the oldest city, it is constructed of coquina stone,
quarried on Anastasia Island, and of native cedar. Ximenez
was a man of considerable means. His will listed an inventory
of store merchandise and personal belongings consisting of
furniture, china and crystal, gold and silverware. In 1855, the
house was purchased by Miss Louise Fatio, daughter of Don
Francisco Felipe Fatio. She opened its doors to many distin-
guished visitors from the north, and, for many years, it was a
well-known "winter residence" for those seeking a warmer
climate. Acquired from her heirs in 1939, the house is main-
tained by the National Society of The Colonial Dames of
America in The State of Florida as a museum house, and is
open to the public.
