APPEARANCE OF A PEST.
THR Usk OF cnAratps,

Mays, the Argosy of July Sth:—
Cultivators are yey busy qlastin

that have been thrown In the
numery beds are ready for trans
parsing. The growth of the seed lo,

wre been very vigorous notwithstand-
ing their growth was retarded by the
activities of the caterpiller worms at
anecatly stage of their growth, [thas
leon the enetom’ since rice planting
1ummepced ip this district about a
decade ago for tke grubs to make thelr
appearance in the rice fields during
the mid-year crop; thus a surprise
was sprung upon the cultivators this
evason by the appearance of the cater
pillars This tice pest eats off the

eaves of the young rice plaot but does
not burt the atem. hence no sooner are
the leaves eaten off (han others springs
hence the destruction done to the rice
beds by this pest cannot be much. The
worms are being got rid of by the
continual flooding of the nursery and
the sweeping off of them from the
plants by means of brooms made of the
jeaseb—v the coconut. However tos
most natural and effectual way of get-
ting tid of this pest ls to make the
crapauds conscious of the existence of
the caterpiltars and in an unusually
short time they will devour all of then
and then will pay regular visits to the
wene of their feasts to see if more
taterpilars ave thera, Instances are
known of cultivators capturing the
ugly crapauds and coveying them in
bags to their rice plots. “And by this
service that the crapaods have done to
the rice farmers mauy have got to see
for the Hrvt tinte that the ugly toads
are of use,
