NEW METHUD OF TRANSPORTING
MOLASSES.

Tux Porto Rico correspondent of
the Louisiana Planter gives the fol-
lowing new method of transporting
molagses :<

The molasses exports of the island
havé received a valuable impetus
with the putting Into service of the
molasses **Tanka” steamer ** North-
western” by the Mercantile Company.
Formerly the exporting of moolasres
waa a most disgusting job, owing to
the difiiculties attendant on ite load-
ing under the old conditions. The
former cargoes were all carried by
achoonera, and the writer has time
aod again seen the wharf front trans-
formed in o huge expanse of molasses
barrels, (San Fernandjace have oft
in the past experienced this) uoder
which ths sodden ground glistened
with the spint liquid and over which
the swarms of fea buzzed back and
furth in noisome clouds, Nor was this
the wotst; many a times bung flew
out ora barrel stave burst open, aud
then the writer bestime aod again seen
the sticky liquid stooped up in buckets
and paus and hollowed palma and
poured back into the barrel from
which [t came, with all the accom:
panyicg impuiities collected during
its sojourn onthe grouad. All this is
dove’ away with jnow by the new
method and ro louger does the arrival
ot a schooner to load molasses signify
the fouling of the vicinity for weeks
thereafter. The â„¢ Noithwestern '
with its huge special tanke comes up
tothe wharf, tbe pipes that control
the outflow of the molasses from its
deposits are connected with the tanks
of tbe steamer, a tap ls turned and lo}

in the space ofone night's work the
steamer was loaded with 673,000 gal-

lons, a fob that by the barrel system
would bave taken nearly 6 month,

The ** Northwestern” hasa capacity of

1,000,000 gallons.
