The Chiet Justice in ping the

questions to their minds were whether
the conviction should be quashed or

thought it was clear under the Ordi-

It appears that the barge was moored

the American Warehouse and the

carried oix loads and was returning

distance along the sea wall perilously
near its edge with the reault that one

reco
legal gentlemen fs, here as in most
otberp not very favourably inclin-
ed towards the scheme for the exten:
sion of the jurisdiction pf the Inferlor
Courts, It being contended that, in the
firet place it fe wolataken direction
for public policy to take to cheapen the
recourse to begal remedies, and that,
in the second place, the abilities as
judges of the geatlemen who occupy
the country benches are not such ae to
make ft desirable to Impose upon ther
the determination of cases of wore than
the most superficial degree of fatricacy.
Jn -our opinion, both objections ate
untenablus and it is we think uode-
niable that, apart from the question of
the additional work being & [ble
burden upon them, for which it is ua-
likely they will be remun¢rated the
majority of the Magistrates are of the
opiolon tbat it would greatly tend to
