Itis the custom in this, as well as in
other civilized colonies, for the most
humble individual at Xmastide, to

creature comforts which aré pot

created if the provisions of the
Sunday Closing law be kept inviolate
in the ciruiwstances. Perhaps it
inight not be too much to suggest,
that ao amending ordinance should be
introduced and carried through all

The second time I saw Mine, Stein-
hill she was a prisoner, accused of hav-
ing murdered both her husband and
her mother. She was famous no fon-
ger aa beauty or society queen, but as
the heroine of an awe-inspiring tray-
edy. They called ber the “Red Wid-

boys sold cynical ballads which in a
cheerful tune, rejoiced at the Idea that
*she” was in jail at Saint-Lazare.

It wasin December last, ona Tues:

Even from all the facte known, and
from the reaulta of the varivus in-
quities made by the law about her

uring the past sixteen months, It ie
dificult, not to say fnipoasible, to form
aclearopinion of this extraordinary
wonan's prychology.

She Js rather delicate and frail, and
yet she is accwsed of having strangled
& man and a woman with her own
little hands. Shehas during her suc-
ceaslve cross-examinations—and let it
by sald that French inagistrates adopt
very drastic methods remained scif-
controlled throughont, and when she
has allowed her e:otious to overcome
her it has been ta ery her innocence in
& truly pathetic and heart-rending
manner. But two bourse sfter, when
whe waa back to prison, she would
gaily ask her counsel, who had cone
tr vieit her: * Well, what are they
saying about me?! What do the news-
pepers think?” Moreover elt months
aftrerthe drama when everyone bad
forgotten ih she deliberately harassed
the chief cf the Criminal Investigation
Department, Dbeseeching him to find
the murderers, told the most fantastic
lies, accused people with Incredible
light-beartedness, and eventually made
it impossibie--not to arrest her! Yet
doctors all agree that she is unusually
clever and well balanced, and that she
is no more hysterical than the average
woman

What, then, isone to believe? It
keumns clear that Sine. Steinheil was
fond of roinancing. She loved ad-
venture and eciotions, craved for
new sensatiens and notoriety. She
toldeo many stories that she lost the
sense of accuravy, and ceased for a
thine to distinguish the real from the
unreal. Logic no longer existed for
her. When asked how a certain fact
had taken place she inveuted story

at once fiattered, worshipped, tempt-

craving for sensation and power, the
passions of others, if not her own

Frayce—and perhaps she aspired to
play, she almost played, the part
