Baldwin Library NEH grant luncheon

The Baldwin Library of Historical Children's Literature NEH grant luncheon was in celebration of the completion of the third phase of the National
Endowment for the Humanities two-year grants awarded to the George A. Smathers Libraries to catalog and digitize children's books held by
the Baldwin Library published between 1850 and 1910. Phase I covered the years 1850-1869 and was awarded in 2000; Phase II covered the
years 1870-1889 and was awarded in 2004; and Phase III covered the years 1889-1910 and was awarded in 2007. Through these three grants
NEH awarded the Libraries a total of $961,015. For their part, thelLibraries contributed an equal amount in cost share, cataloged and enhanced
21,663 records, about half of which were original records contributed to the national databases, and digitized 7,545 books, most of which are up
on the UFDC website. Also, 5,898 titles were microfilmed as part of Phase I. This was truly a collaborative effort as numerous library departments
committed staff time and effort to the project: the cataloging and metadata department, the Digital Library Center, the Department of Special and
Area Studies Collections, the preservation department, the business office, the human resources office, library administration, and the library
grants office.
