Introduction to Block & Lot File

The purpose of the Block & Lot File is to store data and reports

on specific properties in St. Augustine and St. Johns County. Data

will be filed according to the City of St. Augustine subdivision,

Block and Lot classification system (see 1923 official map of the

city). When a site overlaps into an adjacent lot, the lot which

contains the majority of the site will be used. When the site occupies

two or more lots, the lowest lot number will be used to identify the

entire site. Sites outside the municipal corporate limits will be

filed in alphabetical order according to site name.

Whenever appropriate, each site file will be divided into the

following sections: archaeology, architecture, cartography, corres-

pondence, documentation, exhibits, publications (e. g. newspaper

accounts, pamphlets), site reports, and photography. Materials should

be filed in chronological order within each section. Although all

photographs will eventually be integrated into the Audio-Visual collec-

tion, existing photographs in the Block and Lot File will be stored in

that file on a site basis.

The block and lot numbers we use correspond to a 1922
Map of St. Augustine (Butler 1922). HSAPB Map 24
