News & Notes

Welcome back faculty! This month we
want to feature the COE's Collaborative
Assessment and Evaluation Services
(CAPES) unit and its newly acquired
survey development tool: QUALTRICS.

CAPES is a recently launched unit in the
College of Education directed by David
Miller, Research and Methodology
Professor and co-directed by Cyndi
Garvan, Statistics Director. CAPES
activities focus on two functions. First,
professional staff members collaborate
with colleagues in the COE and other
UF units to develop proposals for
external funding. This function focuses
on planning and implementing
evaluations of social science grants or
grants from the hard sciences that
include an educational or social science
component (e.g., working with
Engineering on graduate education and
training grants). CAPES also offers
assistance in designing studies and
collecting, analyzing, and interpreting
results for educational and training
programs. Assistance is available for
qualitative, quantitative, and mixed
methods studies. The evaluation and
research services CAPES provides could
apply to either function.

CAPES offers a range of standard
services structured to meet the most
pressing needs of UF Researchers. These
services include support in the design of
evaluation and research studies;
formulation of data gathering;
statistical, qualitative, and mixed
methods analysis plans; and design,
implementation, and analysis of
research databases. The team of
professionals at CAPES works with
researchers to plan every phase of their
evaluations and assists in the
implementation of their projects.
Researchers have the flexibility to avail
themselves of CAPES professionals for
specific services. Services can be
provided for a fee, or grant proposals
can include CAPES personnel in their
project budgets. CAPES acquired the
QUALTRICS survey tool to support
survey research projects in the COE.
QUALTRICS is a survey solution that
has been implemented in over 90
colleges and universities nationwide by
a company that works with 10-15% of
the Fortune 500 companies. Faculty and
students in the College of Education are
eligible for unlimited and free use of
QUALTRICS. You may find more
information about this professional and
powerful survey tool at

Cyndi Garvan, Statistics Director &
CAPES Co-Director
