THF KING.-By the credentials which with this are sent
to you, I entrust you with the commission of taking the
residencia upon the administration of Don Fernando de
Verrio, Governor of the Island of Trinidad and with the
investigation of other matters of which information has been
given against him and because I have commanded a
commission to be given to you to go and examine and test
the copper mines of Grita, I charge and order you that if
without delay or inconvenience you could go first to make
this investigation (residencia) and report you should do so on
account of the danger there is in delaying it and if not, I
command you to arrange for completing it as quickly as you
can, taking it for granted that you do the one and the other
with the greatest conciseness and least cost possible.

And I write to the said Don Fernando to go to San Domingo
and to the President of that Audiencia that he should send to
summon him and being there, to order the President to send
a force so that the residencia by the Procurator may be held
in due judicial manner.

And that if the said enquiry having been held and the
residencia made, there shall be found no fault with him,
then he may return to continue his government and you may
inform the President that he may order him to do so,

And if he shall be found guilty in such manner that it will
not be fitting that he should return there, you will thus inform
the said President so that he may keep him safely and you will
remain Governor there until you send the report to my
Council of the Indies and it having been seen in the Council
of the Indies, that may be provided which is fitting.

And this you will do with the care, ability and diligence
with which I credit you and you will notify me of all that is
done there.

And for the commission which I have ordered to be
given to you to the end that the trial may be held and the
said residencia made, you shall be paid six ducats a day
whilst occupied there.

And in case vou remain in the said Government on
account of its not being proper that Don Fernando de Berrio
should return there until something else is determined, it is
my will that you should receive at the rate of six hundred
and fifty thousand maravedis a year which is quite as much
salary as you had in the Government of Venezuela, dumiri
all the time that you serve that of the said Island of Trinidad.
