ATLANTA. May 1.-Cyclones and
tornadoes. the like of which have not
been'known for years. swept through
the South Thurslay night and Friday,
leaving in their wake hundreds of
dead and mangled bodies, and the
dismantled wrecks of property worth
many millions.

Tennessee was an especially heavy
suffer. Careful estimates indicate
that at least fifty people were killed
In that State alone, with monetary
los of $1.00,000. At Franklin and
In HllIboro there was loss of life.
The ar town is said to be prac.
tically destroyed. while at Center ille
and adjoining villages the loss Is re-
ported heavy. both In lives and prop-
Near Pulaski. Giles county. the
death list reached twelve and many
are Injured.
Many Small Towns Wrecked.
In the vicinity of Chattanooga the
storm wa felt at Its worst. Tel'e-
phone and telegraph wires were
blown down. and the movement of
trains was greatly hamiperetd The
hurricane followed the ('umrberland
Valley. wrecking small tons and de-
utro ing farm houses.

Soon after dark the storm winds
began shooting across the rail, tei-
graph and telephone lines connecting
Atlanta with Chattanooga and Knox-
ville, and wire comuascation. which
had been kept up with great difficulty
during the afternoon, ceased entirely.
The Western Union and Atlanta Rail-
road offices here reported that south
of Chattanooga, near Emerson. a.
several big tree were blown across
the railroad right of way, tearing
down wires and holding up five trains.
The death totals were swelled last
night by three lightning victims at
Mf ro*-. (;a. Late yesterday after-
noon a rushing windstorm. accompa-
nied by blinding lightning, broke over
Monroe and one of the bolts struck
the residence of M. B. Barrett. tearing
domn the chimney. Rarrett, his wife
and his 17-year-old daughter were
killed. and a 10-year-old ton and a
younger child were seriously shocked

a Considerable Redoution In the
Acreage-Market Qetatioens.

SAVANNAH. Ga., May 1.-The mar-
ket for Sea Islands has ruled firm.
with a fair demand, and prices have
worked a little higher. At the close
there still appears some unsatisfed
Inquiry, and offering are light, espe-
cially of the higher grades.
The comparative position of the
market is considered good. The to-
tal unsold stock here Is thought not
to exceed 3.000 bales, and It Is not
believed that mort than about 3.000
bales remain in the country; so that
the entire present available supply
for the remainder of the season may
be put at about 4.000 bales, with about
500 bales more unaold at Charleston.
LaAt season the sales after April 30
amounted to about 10.000 bales, and
about 3,500 bales were left in the
country. The supply this year is
consequently hardly one-half as large
at last year. despite the Increased
Accounts from the new crop are Ir-
regular. The Eastern Georgia coua-
ties report a considerable reduction
in the acreage. and the outlook Is not
very promising. In the southern cona-
tle, there weems to be about 10 per
cent Increase. and the crop Is stated
to be more advanced and promising
than eer before at this season. In

Amendment in the strongest terms.
