Abstract: To purchase the Howe Collection for the University of Florida Smathers Library's Rare Books Collection, $500,000 was raised. The sale was orchestrated by Sidney Ives, rare book librarian. Both Sidney Ives and Carmen Hurff (Ives’s assistant) are pictured. The collection of rare books was initially built by Henry Salton Howe starting in 1864, who was later joined by his son Parkman Dexter Howe. The Howes assembled their collection of the works of major New England authors over a period of one hundred years
