Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

London, Jan. 28.-Mr. Balfour an-
nounced In the House of Commona to-
day that Holland had made a propo-
sition for peace in South Africa. He
believed the terms were satisfactory
to both Boers and English.
VOTE .OF THANKS
Because of the efficient and faith-
ful services rendered by the retiring
officers of the Ocala Board of Trade
during their term bf office, the board
of governors, at a late -meeting, on
motion of Jacob Brown, seconded by
C. L. Bittinger, 'offer the following
sense of appreciation:
It was with sincere regret that the
members of the Ocala Board of Trade
heard that H. A. Ford declined to
serve another term as its president
For the zeal, fidelity and fine execu-
tive ability displayed during his ad-
ministration of the office, sinking his
personal affairs and interests for
those of the city, for whose welfare
the board labored, and whose hearty
co-operatlon was ever present in as-
sisting the board, so full of sound bus-
iness ideas and helpful in spirit and
work, we especially tender our
thanks.
Nor are we unmindful of the great
interest taken in the doings of the
board by Mr. D. S. Williams, who as
secretary was ever mindful of the
things that counted largest for the
material prosperity of Ocala and Ma-
rion county.
Treasurer J. M. Barco is not forgot-
ten-a worthy citizen, a deeply inter-
ested member and a safe custodian of
the board's surplus funds. His ser-
vices are gratefully acknowledged,
as is the support and wise directing
of its old board of governors, and ev-
ery member who to the best of his
time, ability and opportunity, spoke
and worked for the Nest material in-
terests of Ocala and the county of
Marion. All of which is respectfully
and sincerely submitted.

RIFLES PLAY, FEB. 14
Remember the play to be given by
the Ocala Rifles at the opera house
on the evening of February 14 to
raise funds to enable the company to
attend the Charleston Expositiop. The
title of the piece will be, "A Day In
Cuba." It will be well worth seeing
and in doing so you will help a good
cause. A well drilled company of
gentlemanly young men is the best
advertisement we could have at the
exposition.

^A BANQUET OF HARMONY
The musical recital at the opera
house last evening by William Worth
Bailley, the wonderful blind violinist,
and his able support, Edwin M. Shon-
ert and Miss Elizabeth Northrop, was
all that the most critical audience
could desire. Prof. Shonert, the plan-'
ist. plays with an exquisite delicacy
of touch that brings out every shade
of expression in a most artistic and
finished style, while his grandloseo
passages are strong and brilliant.
His rendition of the second Rhapsodie
by IAszt was especially fine. Miss
Northrop's singing was delightful.
She has one of the sweetest voices
ever heard on the Ocala stage. It is
a clear, liquid, true soprano. Her
range is not remarkable, but, what is
far more pleasing, every note is
clear and bird-like in its delicacy and
sweetness. In her first number, "Aria
-Lucia." she showed to fine advan-
tage her perfect control of her voice
and finished style, while her light.
dainty encore rippled from her pretty
lips like the flowing water in a brook.
Her personality is charming and her
stage manner perfect.
The "star," William Worth Bailey,
is a musical prodigy. Blind from his
birth, he has, by the gift of a wonder-
ful talent and years of hard study.
already reached an enviable position
among the best violin players in
America. His entire program was of
the best music and his execution was
brilliant, artistic and soulful. He
was at his best in the second move-
ment of the Concerto in E Minor, by
Mendelssohn.
Altogether the concert was first
class, a musical treat that the people
of Ocala could not afford to miss.
There was a fair audience, but the
merits of the entertainment demand-
ed a packed house. We are sure that
every one who attended and enjoyed
it will unite in a vote of thanks to
Manager Sylvester for bringing to
our town artists of such ability. Mr.
S. is certainly making an effort to
raise the standard of entertainments
for our people and should receive far
better support than he does. The
next time he brings a company and
recommends It, we hope our best clti-
zens will prove their appreciation of
his work by turning out en masse to
the entertainment.

ME TO SLEEP, MOTHER

Backward. turn backward. 0 Time. in
your flight!
Make me a child again, just for to-
night!
Mother, come back from the echole34
,-hore,
And take me again to your heart, as
of yore;
Kiss from my forehead the furrows of
care,
Smooth the few silver threads out of
my hair;
Over my slumbers your loving watch
keep-
Backward, flow backward, oh, tide of
the years!
I am so weary of toil and of ters,-
Toil without recompense, tears all it
vain:
Take them and give me my childhood
again;
I have grown weary of dust and decay,
Weary of flinging my soul-wealth
away;
Weary of sowing for others to reap-
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to
sleep!
Tired of the hollow, the base, the un-
true,
Mother, oh, mother, my heart calls for
you!
Many a summer the grass has grown
green,
Blossomed and faded, our faces be-
tween,
Yet, with strong yearning and pas-
sionate pain,
Long I tonight for your presence
again.
Come from the silence so long and so
deep,-
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to
sleep!
Over my heart, in the days that are
flown,
No love like mother-love ever has
shone;
No other worship abides and endures,
Faithful, unselfish and patient, like
yours;
None like a mother can charm away
pain t
From the sick soul and the world-
weary brain.
Slumbers soft calms o'er my heavy
lids creep,-
Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to
sleep!
Come, let your brown hair, just light-
ed with gold,
Fall on your shoulders again, as of
old;
Let it drop over my forehead tonight,
Shading my faint eyes away from the
light.

For with its sunny-edged

shadows

once more,
Haply will throng the sweet visions of
yore;

Lovingly. softly,
sweep,-

its bright billows

Rock me to sleep, mother, rock me to
sleep!
Mother, dear mother, the years have
been long,
Since I last listened to your lullaby
song;
Sing, then, and unto my soul it shall
seem
Womanhood's years have been only a
dream;
Clasped to your heart in a loving em-
brace,
With your light lashes just sweeping
my face,
Never hereafter to mourn or to

was elected statistical secretary of
the A. M. E. Conference holding its

is her first visit to Ocala and that she
possibly will be here until spring.
Oscar Johnson is one of our sub-
stantial citizens, who is making a
good living. Unlike many of the rac.
a few dollars passing through his
hands doesn't turn his head.
We are pleased to say that if we
are to judge by the way our people
subscribe for this paper, we will have
to decide that thb Colored Folks' Col-
umn fills a long felt want.
Prominent among the teachers who
were on our streets. Saturday, we no-
ticed Prof. J. L. Wiley and one of his
lady teachers from Martin, Prof.
Blye, of Blitchton and Miss Lecora
Bonner.

been confined to her bed for more
than a week, is able to be about

Springs yesterday over the lotely
macadamized road were Miss SalVe
Smith and Miss Lula Bellamy.

city, at the Marion House, left Friday
to spend awhile at Clearwater.

were well attended, the pulpits being
filled by the respective pastors.
Rev. Bradley went out to Silver
Springs yesterday to dedicate a
church.
Mr. Clifford Edmondson, who some
time ago worked as head waiter at
the Railroad Restaurant, is here from
a trip to Cuba.
Mr. Mathis returned to the city
