Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

SOUTH CAROLINA SUFFERS

The Mountain Section Overwhelmed
with Rain-A Hundred Lives
Lost and Immense Damage
to Property
l-ast Saturday morning the Pacolet
river, which rises near Flat Rock, -N.
C., and runs southward into the Broad
river, in South Carolina, rose thirty
feet in an hour. The Converse mills
at Clifton. S. C., were swept away,
with fifty of the workmen. Twenty
miles further south, the waters swept
through the village of Pacolet, carry-
ing away two big cotton mils, an im-
mense warehouse filled with cotton, a
hotel, a church and several stores.
While the Pacolet river did more
harm than any other stream, all the
creeks and rivers of northern South
Carolina rose to dangerous heights
and immense damage was done all
through that section. People were
drowned, crops ruined and bridges
and houses swept away. Even as far
south as Columbia, the bridges were
endangered. At least 100 lives are
lost and the damage to property goes
into the millions.

HE WAS ALWAYS A HELPER
Waycross, Ga., June 5.-Dr. R. P.

bago and sciatic pains yield to the
penetrating influence of Ballard's
Snow Liniment. It penetrates to the
nerves and bone, and being absorbed
into the blood, its healing properties
are conveyed to every part of the
body and effect some wonderful cures.
Mr. D. F. Moore, Agent Illinois Cen-
tral Railway, Milan, Tenn., states: "I
have used Ballard's Snow Liniment
for rheumatism backache, etc., in my
family. It is a splendid remedy. We
could not do without it" 25c., 50c.

Rev. J. C. Ley, the "Nestor of Flor-
ida Methodism," and his wife will cel-
ebrate their golden wedding on July
4. They now live at Micanopy. Mr.
Ley was born in Georgia in 1822, and
came to Florida in 1844. His wife
was Miss Martha Pottle, of St. Ma-

INTERESTING TO
ASTHMA SUFFERERS
Daniel Bante. of Otterville, Iowa,
writes, "I have had asthma for three
or four years and have tried about all
the cough and asthma cures in the
market and have received treatment
from physicians in New York and oth-
er cities, but got very little benefit un-
til I tried Foley's Honey and Tar
which gave me immediate relief and I
will never be without it in my house.
I sincerely recommend it to all." Sold
by the Postoffice Drugstore.

Mr. Bryan thinks that schools, hos-
pitals. etc., should not accept dota-
tions from Mr. Rockefeller and other
trust magnates. We fear Mr. Bryan
is too good for this world.

KALOLA, NATURE'S REMEDY
CryotaUized Mineral Water-The Pro.
duct of Medicinal Mineral
Springs
If Ponce de Leon, when he made his
famous expedition in search of the fa-
bled fountain of eternal youth, had
but chanced to have known of Kalola,
he might have saved both the sacri-
fice of life and treasure in a vain pur-
suit, for he would have found the next
greatest boon to mankind-the means
of insuring a healthful life, the near-
est approach to eternal youth as yet
ouchsafed to mortals here below. But'
it was left to those less distinguished
many generations later to make the
discovery which is proving of such in-
estimable benefit to thousands of dys-
pepsia-haunted men and women today
by the Kalola Company, of Savannah,
Ga., and they are receiving the most
flattering testimonials from all over
the country in regard to it. Kalola is

PROCURE THE PASSWORD

And You Will Have No Trouble About
Procuring the Oil of Joy-A Matter
for Hamp Chambers to
Investigate
It is rumored that there exists in
the southern end of Alachua county
midway between Citra and Orange
Lake, in the heart of one of the black-
est jungles of the state, an illicit dis-
tillery where good old corn liquor is
turned out by the dozens of barrels.
The distillery is operated by an old
"moonshiner" of the North Georgia
type, who is said to understand the
business, not only in the making of
the goods, but in disposing of them.
There is a certain hollow tree a few
hundred yards from the still, at the
edge of the jungle. Those who are in
a position to know, state that when a
given quantity of whisky is desired all
that is necessary is to carry an empty
jug, place it, together with the price,
in the hollow of the tree and leave it
there. Upod returning later the jug
will be found containing the desired
invigoratorr," and no one is the wiser.
It is said that the owner and operator
of this still makes hourly visits to the
tree, which assures customers of a
wait not longer than that period. As
a matter of course, he is careful with
whom he deals, and comes very near
knowing what he is about. As a
safeguard that he will not fall into
the hands of enemies, he has a cer-
tain "password" which he requires
the customer to write upon a slip of
paper and place on the inside of the
vessel in which it is intended to place
the whisky. Every friend of the en-
terprise has this password, and when
the vessel is examined and the ab-
sence of this slip is noted, to use the
expression, "there's nothing doing."
The still has been in operation several
months, and the owner, enjoying the
confleoce of his customers, is mak-
ing a howling success of the venture
without a probability of being de-
tected.
It has been suggested when Gaines-
ville goes dry that this unlawful but
enterprising distiller open branch
quarters in this vicinity. It might re-
quire several "hollow trees" to meet
the demand, but the Increase in rev-
enue would no doubt ofset the ex-
pense of sustaining them.-Gaines-
ville Sun.

HOT WEATHER WEAKNESS
If you feel fagged out, listless and
lacking in energy, you are perhaps
suffering from the debilitating effects
of summer weather. These symptoms
indicate that a tonic is needed that
will create a healthy appetite, make
digestion perfect, regulate the bowels
and impart natural activity to the liv-
er. This, Herbine will do; it is a ton-
Ic, laxative and restorative. H. J.
Freegard, Prop. Grand View Hotel,
Cheney, Kan., writes: "I have used
Herbine for the last twelve years,
and nothing on earth can beat it. It
was recommended to me by Dr. New-
ton, of Newton, Kan." 50c.. at Anti-
Monopoly Drugstore.

One of the most sorrowful things
about the Gainesville cyclone is the
number of little children killed or
maimed. The poor little chaps, some
only ten years old, were working for
ten hours and a few cents a day when
they should have been at school or
play.

At 11 a. m., the pastor, Rev. J. A.,

sermon, and instead spent the time in
reading and explaining the obligations

large number of applicants who had
applied for membership during the ie-

in number, occupied the front seats.
This reception service was indeed
most impressive. It is safe to say that
no class of applicants for church mem-

to them in a more solemn and impres-

church membership than did the class
of yesterday. After explaining the
rules and obligations, and just before
the taking of the vows the pastori
stated if any of the applicants then

family blood taint.

DEAFNESS CANNOT BE CURED
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deaf-
ness, and that is by constitutional
j remedies. Deafness is caused by an
'inflamed condition of the mucous lin-
Ing of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is inflamed you have a rum-
bling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is
the result, and unless the inflammnp-
tion can be taken out and this tube
restored to its normal condition, hear-
ing will be destroyed forever; nine
cases out of ten are caused by Ca-
tarrh, which is nothing but an in-
flamed condition of the mucous sur-
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by
Hall's Catarrh Cure. Send for circu-
lars, free.

A good citizen of Ocala, whose wife
desired to go on the union picnic,
found himself painfully and undeserv-
edly sick last Thursday morning.
Knowing that his better five-eighths
would surely stay at home did she
know his real condition, he arose,
donned his raiment and a more than
usually diaphanous smile, surrounded
his breakfast by main strength and
accompanied his wife and son to the
train. When they had gone on their
way rejoicing, he returned home and
wrestled with his sickness in soli-
tude. Such virtue is seldom, but we
have reason to believe it is not in this
instance its own(ly) reward.

Go to J. A. Pittman & Son for re-
frigerators, water coolers, ice cream
freezers and ice crackers. They have
a lot of them and are selling all cheap.
