Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

THE LEGISLATURE
HAS ADJOURNED

its Sins of Omission Were Many; Its
Sins of Commission Were Few;
and it Did Average Good
Work
The Florida legislature adjourned
at noon yesterday. Its appropriations
amounted to $1,400,000, which is $100,-
000 more than last session. The (x-
penses of the legislature were $78,000
-high water mark. It was rather
stingy to the schools, but cut circus li-
censes down to not exceeding $100 per
day. a
The bill providing for publication
of all the general acts of the present
legislature has become a law. It pro-
vides that the county commissioners
in each county shall designate a daily
or weekly newspaper, which has been
in existence one year, to publish all
these acts, the compensation to be
$100. The paper must also mail a
copy of the issue containing the pub-
lication to every registered voter in
the county. There will not be much
of a scramble for this work, as the
cost of publication will easily exceed
the amount allowed.

KALOLA, NATURE'S REMEDY
Crystallized Mineral Water-The Pro.
duct of Medicinal Mineral
Springs
If Ponce -de Leon, when he made his
famous expedition in search of the fa-
bled fountain of eternal youth, had
but chanced to have known of Kalola,
he might have saved both the sacri-
fice of life and treasure in a vain pur-
suit, for he would have found the next
greatest boon to mankind-the means
of insuring a healthful life, the near-
est approach to eternal youth as yet
ouchsafed to mortals here below. But
it was left to those less distinguished
many generations later to make the
discovery which is proving of such in-
estimable benefit to thousands of dys-
pepsia-haunted men and women today
by the Kalola Company, of Savannah,
Ga., and they are receiving the most
flattering testimonials from all over
the country in regard to it. Kalola is
nature's remedy, contains nothing

harmful to the weakest system and
possesses unusual strength in remov-
ing the cause of disease. It cures in-
digestion, kidney, liver and bladder
troubles, constipation, and all dis-
eases arising therefrom. It is a crys-
tallized mineral water and the pro-
duct of mineral springs, and for sale
at drugstores or sent by mail to any
address on receipt of 50 cents and $1.
The company also puts up the most
delicious fruit flavoring extracts, mak-
ing a specialty of Florida orange,
Florida lemon, Georgia peach and va-
nilla, all having the delicious aroma
of the fresh fruit. These are for sale
by fancy grocers and jobbers every-
where in the South, especially here
and in our own city of Atlanta, at 25
and 50 cents. The company is also
manufacturer of Rocala, the greatest
cola beverage in the world, and iron
ale, the strengthening drink, and so
conceded.
The office of the Kalola Company is
at Nos. 21 and 23 Bay street, West,
Savannah, Ga.

It is reported that Turkish soldiers
burnt the village of Smlerdash in Ma-
cedonia a few days, and massacred
300 of the inhabitants. It is only rea-
sonable to infer that the Macedonians
would massacre the Turks if they had
the power. The inhabitants of the
Balkan peninsula have been butcher-
ing each other for three thousand
years, sometimes about religion.
sometimes about other matters, and
the atrocities inflicted by the Turks
are no more than those laid to the ac-
count of the Greeks and Romans.

Written Next Day
As I told you yesterday morning
In my little verse or two,
There's no use in you complaining
At what the Great One has to do.
So now the rain on all has fallen,
Causing everything to grow,
And the farmer's heart is happy,
For he longed to see it so.
Uncle Reese's face has brightened
With the prospects still in view,
And Mr. Gardner seems contented
With the business he will do.
And the old hog's move is quicker,

As round the car she heads the
line,
Looking for the watermelon.
Just to chaw the juicy rind.
And I guess that I'm contented,
Though I haven't got the fame;
I'll be happy in the summer,
With the sunshine or the rain.
So let us all join in together,
And take things as they come and
go,
Try to make our lives still better,
And smooth the pathway here be-
low.

Wedding bells still ring through
this section. Sunday, May 31, Miss

Ain't they fine? Mr. Wellhorner, at

about fifty of his finest. Such a pity!

DEAFNESS CANNOT BE CURED
By local applications, as they cannot
reach the diseased portion of the ear.
There is only one way to cure deaf-
ness, and that is by constitutional
remedies. Deafness is caused by an
inflamed condition of the mucous lin-
ing of the Eustachian Tube. When
this tube is inflamed you have a rum-
bling sound or imperfect hearing, and
when it is entirely closed, Deafness is
the result, and unless the inApmmr.
tion can be taken out and this tube
restored to its normal condition, hear-
ing will be destroyed forever; nine
cases out of ten are caused by Ca-
tarrh. which is nothing but an in:
flamed condition of the mucous sur-
faces.
We will give One Hundred Dollars
for any case of Deafness (caused by
catarrh) that cannot be cured by

upon the digestive power of babies;

become strong, healthy and active.

Hearts
Are due to indigestion. Ninety-nine
of every one hundred people who have
heart trouble can remember when it
was simple indigestion. It is a scien-
tihc fact that all cases of heart dis-
ease, not organic, are not only trace-
able to, but are the direct result of
Indigestion. All food taken into the
stomach which falls of perfect diges-
tion ferments and swells the stomach,
puffing it up against the heart. This
Interferes with the action of the heart.
and in the course of time that delicate
but vital organ becomes diseased.

HIS LAST HOPE REALIZED
(From the Sentinel, Gebo, Mont.)
In the first opening of Oklahoma to
settlers in 1889, the editor of this pa-
per was among the many seekers af-
ter fortune who made the big race one
fine day in April. During his travel-

much bad water, which, together with
the severe heat, gave him a very se-

most impossible to check, and along
in June the case became so bad he ex-

night. That one little bottle worked
a complete cure. and he cannot help

bowel disorders being at hand sug-
gests this item. For sale by all drug-
