Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

in the main Mr. Anderson was right,
but he thought there should be delib-
eration and there was plenty of time
to pass finally on this matter at the
May meeting of the board.
The more he thought of the project,
the more he favored a new site for a
court house. AlwVays felt this was not
the place. Didn't favor patching this
building. Architects has not dis-
covered the art of patching, but had
that of constructing new buildings
and in the end it was just as cheap to
the taxpayers.
The editor of this paper said now
was the golden onportunity to act. If
delayed too long, it would pass and in
future years we would regret our der-
eliction. If this lot is donated it will
not be necessary to tear down the
court house bricJ( by brick, but it can
be moved on to another lot intact,

A SPECIAL Mtu'lrNG

Of County Commissioners to Consider
Offering the Court House Lot
to the Government

ACTION DEFERRED UNTIL MAY-
The special meeting of the Board of
County Commissioners convened at
the request of some 200 of the people
of Ocala, who' petitioned for same to
consider the request that board sub-
mit proposition of court house lot for
a site for the government building.
There' were present H. W. Long,
John L. Edwards, Ed L. Wartmann
and Fred Lucius.
Chairman Long read the petition
and then stated what he deemed se-
rious impediments in the way. First,
the only way to raise money for a new
court house was by taxation limited
to 5 mills. This could not be author-
ized under a year, taking two years to
realize on it. The government would
want the property in thirty days.
Ocala is only part, not all of the
county. He spoke of attempts twen-
ty-five years ago by John F. Dunn to
secure the site, but when the people
found it out they rebelled. The court
house yard is a ground of safety in
case of fire, as it has proved in the
past. Referred to the fact that when
the present building was erected ef-
fort was made to change location, but
the people repudiated it.
With the expenditure of $20,000 he
said the present building would be
equal to Tampa's $80,000 building, so
that the district Judge could have a
large private office. He said it was a
shame it was not so and all officials
properly housed and the safety of
public documents assured.
He said it was not difficult to get up
petitions. He said he could go out
and get fifty signatures to'a petition
to hang R. L. Anderson and General
Robert Bullock, so easy was it to get
names.
'General Bullock stated that he had
signed the petition to have the com-
missioners consider the question, not
for final action.
R. L. Anderson maft an admirable
presentation of the question of offer-
ing the court house lot to the general
government. Could the people of the
county have heard its logical conclu-
sions, there would be no question that
they would be ready to give their con-
sent for such use.
He thanked the board for their
courtesy in calling the meeting. Said
the time was now. The best site
would secure the largest appropria-
tion. A $4000 site meant a $35,000
building. Such a site as the court
house lot would reasonably secure a
$75,000 to $100,000 building. This was
pre-eminently the site. The present
$4000 secured is a recognition, and by
the contents of Congressman Spark-
man's letter he felt assured a much
larger sum could be secured if the
court house lot was selected, say
$10,000 or $15,000 for this lot. There
is no hurry in the matter of leaving
the present site. It will take several
years for Congress to make an in-
creased appropriation, then more time
ere another appropriation would be
made to begin building, giving the
county plenty of time to arrange for
a new site and a new court house
building. By getting a good price for
this !ot, it would reduce the expense
of a new -court house.
commissioner r Edwards said Mr.
Anderson had completely covered the
ground and in his mind the scheme
was a good one and he favored letting
the government have the lot.
Mr. Long replied that the project
was one of vast moment and he had
given it much thought and did not fa-
vor selling the lot: To him it seemed
that sentiment possessed him, as he
as county clerk twenty-five years ago
had made record of this lot for the
county. He deemed Mr. Anderson's
plea impracticable.
General Bullock followed. He said

FLORIDA'S CANTALOUPE CROP
The Largest Acreage in the State Cen-
ters at Anthony
The refrigerator people have made a
careful estimate of the cantaloupe
acreage in the state. Along the line
of the Seaboard Air Line there are
2500 acres; Atlantic Coast Line. 3000.
Largest acreage on the S. A. L. is at
Anthony, where 1001 acres have been
planted.
The acreage this year in this deli-
cious product is,double that of last
season. The east coast is just experi-
menting in the plant. The Easter-
lings, at Martin, Marion county, have
the largest cantaloupe farm in the
world, 800 acres. The prospects are
bright for a good crop. The 20th of
May is set for the forward movement
of the crop.
Last season the average shipment
was a car to four acres. This season,
owing to so many more embarking in
the business, it is thought it will take
six acres to fill a car, but then it all
depends on the season. Let us hope
it will be a successful one.
SAVES TWO FROM DEATH
"Our little daughter had an almost
fatal attack of whooping cough and
bronchitis," writes Mrs. W. K. Havi-
land, of Armonk, N. Y., "but, when all
other remedies failed, we saved her
life with Dr. King's New Discovery.
Our niece, who had Consumption in an
advanced stage, also used this won-
derful medicine and today she is per-
fectly well." Desperate throat and
lung diseases yield to Dr. King's New
Discovery as to no other medicine on
earth. Infallible for Coughs and
Colds. 50c. and $1 bottles guaranteed
by Anti-Monopoly Drugstore. Trial
bottles free.
HUNTING RABBIT EGGS
The Easter egg hunt thoughtfully
provided for the children of the Pres-
byterian Sunday school by the pastor
of the church, Rev. Dr. Lindsay, yes-
terday afternoon In the Gary grove,
was a great success and hugely en-
joyed by all present. There were
about seventy-five children, and a
dozen grown people, who assisted the
youngsters in making it interesting.
Of course Dr. Lindsay and his estima-
ble wife were the center of attraction;
from them radiated all lines of enjoy-
ment.
The "hunt" of the Episcopal Sun-
day school children at Mrs. Jewett's
was equally enjoyable and a delight to
the little folks.

,ATION AT THE CITY MARKET

Stockholders' Meeting Encouraging:
Report-Money in the Treasury
and Work Being Done

A meeting of the stockholders of theI
Ocala Fair Association was held at,
the city hall at 11 o'clock today.
President H. A. Ford was in the chair,
and Secretary W. W. Clyatt and
Treasurer S. T. Sistrunk were present.
The roll was called and it was found
that out of the $4070 of paid-up stock
$3113 was represented by holders or
proxies.
A lengthy discussion ensued when
the matter of adopting the by-laws as
presented was brought, but they were
finally adopted just as drafted by
President Ford and E. P. Thagard.
Election of permanent officers was
then taken up. H. A. Ford was re-
elected president. S. T. Sistrunk sec-
retary and T. T. Munroe treasurer,
with the following board of directors:
R. S. Hall, George MacKay, J. C. Boo-
zer, E. P. Thagard, Clarence Camp
and S. A. Standley.
The gentleman were elected unani-
mously and the secretary cast the
vote.
On account of his crippled arm, Mr.
Sistrunk had not made out an item-
ized report, but stated that he had
collected in cash $4070 and paid out
altogether from $1200 to $1300, $650 of
which was for the land on which the
race track and fair grounds will be lo-
cated. $121 for clearing, etc. J. R.
Moorhead has taken the contract to
grade the track for $900 and $400 of it
has been paid him on account. There
is now in the bank $2923.60 and nearly
enough lumber on the ground and
subscribed to do the fencing. By spe-
cial request of Mr. Sistrunk, a com-
mittee-H. C. Jones and W. J. Cham-
bers-was appointed to check up his
accounts before turning them over to
the new treasurer.
The matter of purchasing the big
LaCreolla cigar factory, located 600
yards from the track, was discussed.
The building is 115 by 45 feet and
three stories high, is in a perfect state
of preservation, and can be bought for
$750, $250 of which will be taken in
stock. Mr. MacKay and Mr. Ford
have examined the building and state
that approximately $1000 will move it
to the fair grounds. It cost, when
lumber was much cheaper than now
(about 35 per cent. cheaper), $4800,
and placed on tne grounds would be
cheap today at $6000. Its value as a
permanent fair building would be very
great. The directors were empow-
ered to look into the matter at once
of securing the state fair for Ocala
and if thought best to purchase and
move the building.

HERE ARE MANY
sickly women be-
tween the ages of
45 and 65, but there are
very few invalids over 56
and 60 years of age. The
change of life coming to
a woman near her forty-
fourth year, either makes

her an invalid or gives -I
her a new lease on life. Those who
meet this change in ill health sel-
dom live ten years afterward, while
a woman who lays aside the active
duties of womanhood in health sel-
dom fails to live on in happiness,
years after she has passed 60. This
is truly a critical time.
Mrs. Laura S. Webb, of Toledo,
Ohio, recognizes the change of life
as a dangerous period and she also
has faith in Wine of Cardui. She
writes:
"As I had always been troubled more
or less at the menstrual period, I dreaded

ine of Cardu will be of great benefit
at this time."
Wine of Cardui is the remedy to
re-inforce a woman against the shock
that comes with the change of life.
It re-establishes healthy functions
after years of suffering. In doing
this it has saved thousands of suf-
ferers just in time. Do not wait
