Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

Methodist

The Sunday school in the morning
was largely attended, as usual.
At 11 a. m. the pastor, Rev. J. A.
Hendry, preached a grand Easter ser-
mon, his text being the words of the
angel to the women at the open sep-
ulcher: "He is not here, for He is
risen, as He said." We are only able
to append a brief synopsis of the line
of thought of the sermon. The evi-
dences of a risen Christ are all around
us and throughout the universe, as
shown in the wonderful success and
power of the religion of Christ from
His resurrection to the present time.
If Christ be not risen, then the
preaching and faith is vain, is the
substance of a declaration from the
Bible. But has this preaching and
faith been vain? We must answer
"No," as we view the great and super-
natural evidences of its power, one of
the greatest of these evidences being
the resurrection of great multitudes
from the death of sin and woe to the
life of holiness and joy unspeakable.
Christ's power before His death and
resurrection was limited to time and
place on account of His being in the
flesh. but now He is risen, He has
burst the bands of death and mortal-
ity, and reigns everywhere supreme.
The choir were not able to render
the fine Easter music they contem-
plated having, on account of sickness
of the organist, but they hope to ren-
der it next Sunday. The pastor an-
nounced the following as received into
the church by certificate from Metho-
dist churches elsewhere: E. L. Frey-
ermuth, Cotton Plant circuit, Mrs. B.
F. Windham. Cordele, Ga.. W. T. Hol-
land and wife. Waynesboro, Ga. The
Easter decorations of flowers, ever-
greens, etc., about the pulpit and
chancel were very beautiful.
At 4 p. m. the Epworth League met.
the topic being on the line of Easter,

How it was Observed in the Churches
of Ocala.
Easter was observed in our churches
with unusual interest. The attend-
ance was large and the spirit display-
ed most commendable.
Presbyterian
The services held at the Presbyte-
rian church were largely attended.
The audience at the morning service
was especially gratifying. Dr. Lind-
say preached two very fine sermons
which greatly pleased his hearers. The
decorations over and around the al-
tar were very pretty and quite elabor-
ate and In keeping with the day.
Dr. Lindsay, in the absence of Hon.
C. M. Brown, in attendance at the leg-
Islature, is serving as superintendent
of the Sunday school and is making an
excellent officer. His teaching of the
Bible class is very instructive and
deeply appreciated by the members.
Baptist
Services at the Baptist church were
well attended. Rev. Dr. White, the
gifted preacher from Macon, Ga., de-
livered three splendid sermons, morn-
Ing, afternoon and night.
The afternoon services were for men
only and his subject was "The Prodi-
gal Son." The body of the church
was well filled and at night the build-
ing was crowded and many turned
away. The ushers, consisting of Will
Gary,. Baxter Cam and Troy Hall,
were kept busy seating and hunting
seats for the large crowd. The vesti-
bule was packed, the line of people ex-
tending' out onto the steps and walk.
The pastors of the Methodist and
Christian churches, Messrs. Hendry
and Hanna, and many of their flocks
were present. Rev. Mr. Hendry opened
the services with a fervent prayer.
The singing was fine. Mrs. Colborn
sang a solo with feeling and expres-
sion. Miss Georgia Smith, of the
Episcopal church, Mrs. Hilburn and
Mrs. Johnson, of the Methodist
church, and Miss Iola Liddon, of the
Christian church, assisting the Bap-
tist choir.
Dr. White preached a strong and
forceful sermon on the unpardonable
sin of denying the Holy Ghost and
resisting the promptings of the Holy
Spirit.
At the close a large number came
forward and Joined the church, while
many others presented themselves for
prayer. It was an hour of prayerful
heart-searching and solemn thought.
Dr. White is doing a great work in our
city.
This afternoon Dr. White spoke to
the young people at 4 p. m. and will
preach tonight at 7:45.
The attendance is fine and Interest
increasing. Pastor Warren is right
behind Dr. White and both are thor-
oughly consecrated men, and their
work is telling. A number of people
have confessed Christ that intend
joining other churches in the city.

it and gloried in the great resurrec-
tion, for in it is the hope and life of
humanity. It was pleasing to the
speaker to think that what had been
a matter of some indifference to other
religious denominations had grown in
importance during the past half cen-
tury and now they were as eager as
the mother church, Episcopulus, to
demonstrate as the most tremendous
event that history has ever recorded
the death and resurrection of Christ.
The leading newspapers of the land
devote columns on columns to telling
all about Easter and its grand signifi-
cance.
"If a man die, shall he live again?"
This question, asked and reiterated
almost ever since the world revolved
and humanity appeared on its convex
surface, was the supreme one. There
are those who say man is a beast, that
when he ceases to breathe it is all
over. Not so. Christ answered that
question when He arose from the
dead to intercede for all humanity.
This is the significance of Easter.
The speaker believed that as we live
here, so shall we continue in the life

to come. If our aims are high, noble,
holy, so shall we progress. If base
souled and ungodly, how fearful the
contemplation. Before this certainty
of a future life, the Rector plead elo-
quently for all to believe in the Lord
Jesus Christ and enjoy eternal happi-
ness instead of woe.
The altar of the church was beauti-
fully decorated by loving hands with
sweet flowers, among which the Eas-
ter lily predominated. The base of
the fountain was shadowed with cam-
melias in the form of a cross, while
its apex was adorned with Easter
lilies. Lilies beautified the pulpit,
while the chancel rail was festooned
with vines, as was the Eucharist ta-
ble, while over the opening to the
choral rail was suspended the anchor
of hope, formed of red, white and yel-
low roses, the whole presenting a
most attractive picture. The music
was unusually fine. Miss Byrd Wart-
mann, of Citra, presided at the organ,
while the choir was strengthened by
Mr. Charles Cullen and Mrs. J. B. Cut-
ler, whose cultivated voices added
greatly to the volume of harmony.
St. Catherine's Guild meets Thurs-
day afternoon at 3 p. m. at Mrs. Her-
bert Crook's.
The annual meeting of the Woman'S
Auxiliary will meet at Mrs. W. P.
Haisley's Thursday afternoon.
Wednesday there is the garden par-
ty at the rectory. All Invited. Rev.

SE[NTWCED TO HANG

Will Jacobs, the Rapist, will Receive
the Extreme Penalty for His
Crime
Judge W. S. Bullock convened court
this morning to clear up the docket
and pass sentence on the twice con-
victed rapist, Will Jacobs. A number
of arguments and motions in civil
suits were heard and Judge Bullock
then asked Will Jacobs to stand up
and be sentenced. The man, a very
powerful, ash-colored negro, arose, in
an unconcerned manner, and kept his
eyes steadily fixed on the judge, who
asked him if he had anything to say
why the sentence of the law should
not be passed. He said he had noth-
ing to say except that he was not
guilty, and asked the mercy of the
court. The Judge made a splendid
and most touching talk to the guilty
man, one of the best of its kind ever
heard In this court house. He said in
part: "You have all along contended
that you were not guilty, and thinking
that it was barely possible for the first
Jury to be mistaken, I granted you a
new trial, as I would much rather put
the state to the extra trouble and ex-
pense than to have a shadow of a
doubt as to your guilt. Your second
trial, by twelve new men, with your
new witnesses and evidence before
them, promptly as did the first Jury
found you guilty, with no recommen-
dation for mercy. Your crime is the
most heinous known to society, one
that were the victim a white girl, un-
der the unwritten law of custom,
would have precluded you a trial in
these halls. It has been suggested to
me that the fact of your victim being
a member of your own race, and one
of the lower strata at that, should
mitigate your sentence. I do not
agree with this. This poor little ne-
gro girl, a mere child, baby almost,
left alone at home, unprotected, rav-
ished and almost killed and left in a
helpless-and as far as you knew or
cared, in a dying-condition, robbed of
all she held sacred and dear in this
world, is as much entitled to the pro-
tection of the law as though she were
white. I have been sorely perplexed
over the matter of ybur sentence and
have put off the painful duty that has
devolved upon me for several days,
during which time I have pondered
over the matter night and day, trying
to see my duty. Much influence has
been brought to bear upon me in your
behalf and against you. Your rela-
tives have plead earnestly for len-
iency. Three of the Jury have asked
me for clemency, but one of these
withdrew the request. You have had
as fair a trial as man ever had, with
able and learned counsel to defend
you, and It is my painful duty, one
that I would so gladly escape, if I
could, to pass the sentence of the law.
The sentence of the court is that you,
Will Jacobs, be held In solitary con-
finement in the county Jail of Marion
county, until such time as the execu-
tive of the state of Florida shall fix,
and from thence shall be taken by the
sheriff and hanged by the neck until
dead, and may God have mercy on
your soul."
The prisoner did not show the
slightest trace of emotion, but his
aged uncle just behind him wept.
Judge Bullock adjourned court Just
before noon and left on the afternoon
train for Palatka, where he will open
court for Putnam county tomorrow.

Golden Medical Discovery, as a reliable medicine, well worthy
of the confidence of those seeking relief. It is certainly a most
efficient specific for afflictions of the digestive organs, headache,
heartburn, and kindred troubles caused by a disordered stomach.

We
Beliee In

We believe that every man when he
is sick ought to call a doctor, and not
try to "doctor" himself. We believe
that there would be far less sickness-
far better health-if everybody would
do everything possible to co-operate
with doctors in taking better care of
the health. We believe that the best
way, always, is to have a doctor see
what the matter is, and write a pre-
scription for it, and then have a re-
liable druggists prepare the medicine
according to the prescription.
