Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

Mayor of Jacksonville Tells What He
Knows and Expresses His Opinion
of the Stetson University
Trouble
To tih E'ditor of thei Metropolis:
For months the public has been re-
galed with all kinds of attacks on the
president and truste,-S of Stetson
Unilv--isity, ;irid they have- been con-
teInt to st;lnd ,ion the ;t.tion of the
boir'i .and I-t that spriak for itselIf.
"The wtr resident h;is been :isYail-ed in the
most unjust, wic'keld andl barbarous
rrl:niier in the publicc ,pr'ss and other-
wi.se. The trust..ees h;.ve been held up
as unworthy of confidence., and want-
ing in sincerity and principle. Mali-
jlls ;land false these statements have
be-en, but we\% have not troubled you for
space 'to rely. I do not propose to
enter into any discussion of the mat-
terq now. Latt-rly thl-se assaults are
being aimed at the I'niversity itself,
and in its defense, as one who cher-
ishes its welfare even though that In-
volves opposition to its absolute dom-
ination by one influence. I feel. In that
behalf, called on to correct the mis-
relresentations embraced in the arti-
clet copied by you yesterday from a
DeLan paper under the, flaming head-
lines, "Seventy-Two Left School:."
"The Stetson University is Now Suf-
fering." The head line is not true.
The usual number of students who go
out at the close of the winter term
have gone, including the ('hicago stu-
dents, who always leave to take up
their studies in ('hicago I'niversity,
where they left off in Stetson.
The New Students
The usual number, perhaps a little
iPore, of new students have entered
for the spring term and there are in
actual attendance at the University
today more students than ever before
in its history at the beginning of any
spring term. The statement that the
sentiment over the state is almost
unanimous for Dr. Forbes' retirement
is not true. This is equally mislead-
ing with the statement that this sen-
timent favors "the reinstatement of
Mr. Stetson (in the board of trustees."
The author of that statement must
have known that Mr. Ste.tson has nev-
er been removed as a trustee. He
knew, as others who have given pub-
licity to like expressions have known
or could have known, that Mr. Stet-
son is a trustee today. Mr. Stetson is
not president of the board. His term
as president expired at the Ilst meet-
ing. He was not re-elected, and what
self-respecting body could be expect-
ed to elect as its president any man
who had denounced it as unworthy of
confidence and declared he could not
work with and that he had abandoned
the I'niversity and cared nothing for
its future? But these scribblers and
perverters of truth prefer to tell the
public that Mr. Stetson was displaced
is a trustee when they must know
that is not true. Other statements
-and conclusions s in the article men-
tioned -ire equally :at variance with
facts and untenable.
The Situation
So far from Dr. Forces' connection
with the I'nivcirsity being a dletriment,
;t is its hope aind salvation. The pre-
dictin that "'there will inot be a cor-
I.ra;il's guard there a:t the opening of

Editor Star: In reply to N. A.
Fort's article of April 3rd I will say:
N. A. Fort makes a false statement
when he says that he has furnished
the public with a true copy of the pe-
titions for Wellhorner and myself, as
the following will prove: He counts
one man entirely out of the district
for Wellhorner. which leaves him 45.
And here are the names on my peti-
tloin that he didn't count for me:
William Leoman, J. A. Hicks, B. L.
Hickman. J. F. Falany, W. V. Bessant,
F. 0. Kelly, Will Holly, Drew Holly.
J. N. Cox, M. Waldon, P. Long and
Oliver McDonald. making twelve, with
several on my Eureka petition that I
can't get the names of at this writing,
as Fort has the original petition and
will not let me have it. Now let us
see, add 12 to 40, which will make 62
for Marlow, 45 for Wellhorner, a ma-
jority of 7 for myself, without the
names on the Eureka petition. Again
I say I had a majority if I had had an
honest count. Now let the public say
who is right.
Mr. Fort says I requested him to
change my bid, which he knows to be
willfully false. I'm afraid Fort is like
the old darkey who was drowning. He
prayed to the good Lord to help him
out and he would give him a piece of
tallow as big as a dishpan. A darkey
on the shore says, "Why, Sambo, you
got no tallow." He says, "Hush, you
fool you, de good Lord don't know
nothing' 'bout it."
Again, Fort says I spoke against
him and did all I could to defeat him
in the election, in which he makes a
wilful false statement. This is gen-
erally known by the voters of this
district as well as myself.
I did for Fort, as I agreed, all that
I could to elect him. On the back of
it he went back on his promise to me
and defrauded me in every way that
he could. It was not until forbearance
ceased to be a virtue that I revealed
to the public the private matters be-
tween Fort and myself. Now the pub-
lic judge who is the Benedict Arnold.
Now Fort says that I admitted to
him that Wellhorner would beat me.
Poor fellow, I'm sorry for him. I'm
afraid he hasn't read the passage of
-Scripture that says, "All who do not
speak the truth will have a share in
the lake that's very uncomfortable."
On the day that Fort speaks of see-
ing me prior to the election he told me
there was some talk of its being left
to a petition, to meet him on election
morning and he would let me know
for certain; in the meantime, to take
a petition with me. While waiting
for Fort eleven men signed my peti-
ion. On his arrival I went at once to
know about it. as I had a crew of
men two miles away, on the opposite
side of the river, at work, and I was
anxious to get to them. He told me
he was still undecided and to go on
to my work, and if he decided for it to
go by petition he would let me know,
that one man should not take the ad-
vanntage of the other. As soon as I
wasgone he agreed with them to let it
go by a petition, and he did not inform
me until the next day, evening, he
wrote me from Ocala. I didn't get his
letter until the following Sunday. I
have reliable information that Mr.
Wellhorner was out at 11 o'clock the
night of the election trying to get sig-
natures. All the following day he
canvassed the district. Before I had
any knowledge of it Mr. Wellhorner
had entirely canvassed the district.
Mr. Fort again reminds me of the
frog that in trying to catch a grass-
hopper fell in the well. He caught on
the curb about half way. He looked
up and decided he'd jump out, but ev-
ery time he jumped he fell back and
instead of getting out he went to the
bottom. A. D. Marlow.
P. S.--Since writing the above, I
have received the following names of
persons who signed my Eureka peti-
ion that live in my district. They
ere sent me by a friend who knows
em to be in my district. They are:
JL. F iedio. T. N. Wells. Sr., T. N.
ells. Jr., J. W. Wells., John Hair and
A. Strickland. Total. 6. Add this 6

C. L. BITTINGER.
Editor and Business Manager.

SIt R. CARROLL, CITY EDITOR.

A very interesting reminiscence
came to light Monday evening as the
Board of County Commissioners ad-
journed. Chairman Long's memory
was touched when Commissioner Jno.
L. Edwards Invited the members of
the board to hear Rev. Dr. White. who
is holding a series of revival services
at the Baptist church.
He said when he was county clerk
In 1878 the Methodist minister, Rev.
A. A. P. Neel. was not feeling very
well and attributed his indisposition
to Ocala's unhealthfulness, which Mr.
Ebenezer Harris resented. As he was
the town's most progressive and en-
terprising citizens, and was untiring
In his efforts to build up the same, he
went around to the citizens, and got
a statistical account of the health of
the people, which he found admirable,
and so grandly refuted the minister's
choleric reflietion on the salubrious-
ness of MJ climatPand the hygienic
conditions of the town. _But the pas-
tor finally left for BUtmore, Md.,
where he died e Bapst minister

tenda t at the Methodist chich-was
called/on to conduct and rea the fu-
ner alnlervices over the grave of those
who |cro4ssc.d the river" during the va-
cance of these pulpits for sl months.
Durlng those years a most Iratern.l
and jhristian spirit prevailed among
these .ongregat ons, to the e ent that
every 3Tftuesdiay night the Ba tists met
to stu" the Sunday school esson for
the co ng Sabbath, in which the
Methodllsflqastor and hip flock joined,
and on W I 1a1J lng the Meth-
odists m his flock ronalred to the old Metho-
dist church and together they hield
swect communion over God's Word.
Now in the absence of the pastors
this food work did not droop and die,
but Mr. Long was made the accre.dit-
ed teacher and during those six
.- months he met weekly with the Bap-
tists and Methodists and his labors
were ably seconded by Mrs. Fannie
Gary, then as now a consecrated Bap-
tist and a helper in all good work, and
Julge Cordero, a pillar in the same
church, long since gone to his heav-
enly reward, while on the part of the
Methodists Mr. Ebenezer Harris ever
lent his presence and helpful counsel.
It Is pleasant, after a lapse of a
(uartcr of a century, to recall such
"brothle-ly and sisterly comminglings"
In the cause of the Supreme Ruler of
the universe.

UNIQUE BUT DELIGHTFUL
Mrs. William Hocker entertained
yesterday in honor of her guest, Mrs.
Trusten P. Drake, of Drakes Point, in
Lake county, Miss Lucy Robertson
and Miss Addie Hansborough of Eliz-
abethtown, Ky. It was one of the
most unique and delightful entertain-
ments ever given in Ocala. Invita-
tions included a request that each la-
dy dress her hair to represent some
noted feminine character in history or
on the stage. The contest was of the
most intensely exciting character.
Mrs. Drake carried off the palm as
Marguerite, in Faust, and Mrs. T. B.
Snyder was a close second as Mary
Queen of Scots. The guessing was
lively as to who the contestants rep-
resented. A tie was the result and in
the cut Miss Hansbrough bore off the
prize, a burnt wood panel, the handi-
work of the accomplished hostess.
Those who personated "Queen Lou-
ise" were Misses Robertson and Agnes
Burford and Mrs. Mallory Liddon. and
so artistic and faultless was their
make-up that they were all voted
worthy of queenship. Miss Hans-
brough represented "'C'olumbi:a." Mrs.
Edward Holder Mrs. 'leveland, Mrs.
Edward Hiller Queen Alexandra. ,Mrs.
Howard Munroe Queen Isabella. Miss
Mary Piatt. "Liberty," Miss Edith
Platt, "Red Rose," Miss Mattie Wil-
liams, "Dolly Varden." Miss Violet
Harris "Juliet," and Miss Lena Bul-
lock the fair "Ophelia."
Maxine Elliott, said to be the most
beautiful woman on the stage today,
was personated by Miss Sue R:lco.
and Emma Eaines Story, the bird ,of
song, by Miss Maxie Blullock; Miss
Va;leta Potter represented the Princess
of WVales. Miss Sar lHarris MaiiI
Antoinette, Miss Johnnie LiddoSi
Queen Elizabeth, and Mrs. S. T. Sis-
trunk, Cleopatra: Miss louella (Cary
was "Red Riding Hood" and Mrs. N.
M. Allred Martha Washington. All
deserve great credit for their skill and
taste.
Delicious refreshments were served
by Misses Frances Anderson and Ha-
zel Hiller.
It was a most delightful occasion
every way and Mrs. Hocker proved
herself a charming hostess.

HOW TO WARD OFF AN
ATTACK OF RHEUMATISM
"For years when spring time came
on and I went into gardening, I was
sure to have an attack of rheumatism
and every attack was more severe
than the preceding one," says Josle
McDlonald, of Man, Logan county,
West Virginia. "I tried everything
with no relief whatever, until I pro-
cured a bottle of Chamberlain's Pain
lBi;m. and the first application gave
me ease, and before the first bottle
was used I felt like a new person.
Now I feel that I am cured, but I al-
ways keep a bottle of Chamberlain's
Pain Balm in the house, and when I
feel any symptoms of a return I soon
drive it away with one or two applica-
tions of this liniment." For sale by

CRUSHES OUT

THE LIFF
I The most loathsome and repulsive of all
living things is the serpent, and the vilest and
most degrading of all human diseases is Contagious 1'X(od Poison. The
serpent sinks its fangs into the flesh and almost instant! v the poison passes
through the entire body. Contagious Blood 'Poison, beginning with a little
ulcer, soon contaminates every drop of blood and spreads throughout the
whole system. Painful swellings appear in the groins, a red rash and
copper colored splotches break out on the hbo'ly, the mouth and throat
become ulcerated, and the hair and eye brows fall out; but these symptoms
are mild compared to the wretchedness and suffering that come in the latter
tes of the disease when it attacks the bones and more vital parts of the
It is then that Contagious Blood Poison i:; seen in all its hideous-
ines. The deep eating abscesses and sickening ulcers and tumors show
the whole system is corrupted and poisoned, and unless relief comes soon
this serpent disease tightens its coils and crushes out the life. The only
antidote for the awful virus is S. S. S. It is nature's remedy, com-
posed entirely of vegetable ingredients. S. S. S.
destroys every vestige of the poison, purifies the
blood and removes all danger of transmitting the
8 awful taint to others. Nothing else will do this.
Strong mineral remedies, like mercury and potash,
dry up the sores and drive in the disease, but do not cure permanently.
Send for our home treatment Ybook and write us if in need of medical
