Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

OUR GOOD ROADS

And the Methods of Making Them In-
spected by a Committee From
Alachua County
As previously announced in these
columns, Chairman Ldhg, of the Board
of County Commissioners for Marion,
with Allan Rodgers, state agent of
good road machinery, and C. L. Bit-
tinger, editor of the Star, met at the
train yesterday afternoon Messrs. T.
F. Thomas, chairman of the Alachua
county board of commissioners, Mr.
Ramsey, of the same board, and Mr.
McArthur and Mr. Pedrick, members
of the Gainesville city council, who
came here to inspect Marion county's
good road machinery and the work it
did.
Carriages were procured by Mr.
Long and the party taken to the pit
north of town, on the line of the Ocala
and Anthony short cut, accompanied
by General Robert Bullock, who had
never seen the machinery at work.
The party found County Overseer of
Roads Will Lucius hard at work look-
ing after all the details of the plant
and seeing that the output was trans-
ferred as rapidly as prepared by the
rock crusher and elevator placing it in
the bin. could be distributed by En-
gineer *Wecks with the traction en-
gine and the wagons, that hold five
tons Pach of crushed rock.
Every detail of the outfit was care-
fully scrutinized and a hundred ques-
tions incident to the work asked: the
expense of the machinery, the number
of tons of rock that 'could be crushed
a day, how many hands it took to sue-,
cessfully operate It and what such
roads as it was building cost per mile.
Several hours were spent on this mat-
ter. when the party returned to Ocala.
Thi.s scribe took Messrs. McArthur
and i'edriek a short distance out on
the Silver Springs road, built by wag-
,n lower and hand labor, the roadbed
of which Is clay and gravel, which
they greatly admired. They also ex-
pressetd a wish to see the new race
track and the lime road in that direc-
tion; also asking to take a look at F.
A. Teague's Flemington clay road, the
first of its kind, and the initial step
in Marion county in inaugurating the I
present good road system. All of I
which was appreciated and noted.
It is needless to add these gentle-
men came from a neighboring county
and city, thoroughly imbued with the
conviction that hard roads are a vi-
tal necessity in this age of progress
in any community that expects to
keep abreast of the times, secure the
best there is in the inducements to
get new settlers, promote and stimu-
late agricultural pursuits and in every
way promote the welfare and prosper-
ity of the country, and with this end
In view the local legislators of Alach-
ua county, and of the substantial,
pretty, growing and prosperous city
of Gainesville came to confirm certain
opinions they had conceived along
these lines that to build good roads
the best machinery possible to get was
needed, and Marion had this.
They were not disappointed. Their
minds are made up and it will only be
a short while, if these gentlemen's
convictions prevail, before Alachua
will begin the grand march of building
public highways that will be a credit
to the leading county of the state and
a lasting benefit to every taxpayer in
it-roads that will be roads, and every
passing hood will leave as a monu-
ment to the wisdom and economic
principles that must be the basic ac-
tion of every intelligent and up-to-
date business mind-not to scatter the
sands of today over the highways of a
county in the shape of from $12,000
to $16,000 for a year's taxes, to have
a rain storm of tomorrow sweep it in-
to space.
The meeting with these gentlemen
was a pleasant one. Every one of

"SHE DID WHAT SHE COULD"
Was the subject of Rev. Henry W.
Little's remarks at the Lenten service
last night at Grace Episcopal church.
During the season he has been read-
ing the writings of the Bislbp of Chi-
cago, on subjects pertinent to the days
of Lent as they passed. Last night
was depicted the scene of Mary's
pouring the vase of oil on the head of
Jesus and bathing His feet in her
tears and wiping them with the hair
of her head. It is.a scene sublime in
its significance, and the original re-
marks, interpreted by the rector, in
the reading of the interesting, instruc-
tive and grand act, heightened* the
effect of this resplendent deed of the
contrite Mary. So simple, yet so
touching were his words that they left
a deep impression on his hearers.
To emphasize Christ's comment, in
reply to the criticism made on Mary's
extravagance, the rector related the
story of a young soldier's life in the
Queen's Guard, who heard the Bishop
of Newfoundland tell of the great de-
sire of the poor fishermen on that
bleak and rugged coast to have a
chapel and religiouT services. This
young guardsman was a man of rank
and wealth, but the recital of the spir-
itual needs of these people so touched
him that he tendered his yacht so the
scattered fishermen could be reached,
but remembering the boat needed a
captain he offered his services. The
bishop made the young man a lay
reader. He entered into the work
with zeal and devotion, later was or-
dained and devoted his life to the du-
ties of ministering spiritually to these
hungry souls and in time they looked
upon him as a father and a short
while ago the rector heard of his
death, impressing him with the fact
that this man "did what he could" for
the church and the salvation of souls.
What a grand and noble life! Let us
pattern after him.
He then related a pleasinr incident
of his experience at Panasoffkee Mon-
day morning, where he led service.
As the rector was about to take the
train a delegation waited on him and
handed him $50. "What is this for?"
asked the rector. "Oh," was the re-
ply. "we have been thinking our little
chapel needed an organ and it would
be so nice to have a musical instru-
ment to assist in celebrating Easter
Sunday; and we want you to buy us
an organ." He felt so gratified to
think these young men had done what
they could and they could feel proud
of their giving.
He said when trouble and perplex-
ity came and he needed advice he al-
ways sought Jesus and Paul, and tried
to do as they would have done. Oh,
for the grace and humility, to seek
their counsel and do their bidding.
Tonight the rector will speak on
"The Lord's Supper." He desires a
full attendance of members. Friday
noon he will speak of Christ's cruci-
fixion. This latter service will last
three hours. He does not expect all
to remain throughout the service, but
to be present at least half an hour or
more, or stay awhile, go home and
rest and come again.
He said this was no new feature of
the church: that it was old as the
church body, but comparatively a new
thing here. Where he ministered be-
fore. the first time he held this service
probably twenty came. the next year
more came., and last year, the sixth of
his ministry, the house would not hold
the people who came to participate.

ing Out Boxes, Baskets, Barrels

Mr. John L. Edwards, one of the
new proprietors of the Feaster Crate
Mill Co., at Irvine, returned from that
place this morning, where with Mr. E.
L. Wartmann, of Citra, another party
interested in the new concern, and
Lon Edwards, secretary and treasurer
of the new company, he devoted yes-
terday afternoon to putting the mill
in operation, with the old mill force
and Mr. Alford as manager. It is the
purpose of the new proprietors to
make their output of crates, boxes,
baskets and barrels second to no man-
ufacturer in the land and in every
particular to maintain the high stand-
ard of excellence of material and pro-
duct so enviable in the history of Mr.
Feaster's proprietorship and if possi-

AN IMPORTANT MEETING
Of the Turpentine Operators of the
Ooala Sub-Association
The Ocala sub-association of tur-
pentine operators met In the city this
morning. The attendance was good.
seventeen turpentine locations being
represented. President F. Lang, the
father of the association, was in the
chair, and Mr. Rowe, of Daisy, acted
as secretary. The recent unprecedent-
ed decline in spirits, following the late
high prices, was discussed at length.
After a free discussion of the situa-
tion, a resolution was adopted, ap-
pointing a committee of three to make
Inquiry and report at the next meet-
ing, on the advisability of holding
spirits in tanks and waiting for a
more satisfactory market. The oper-
ators anticipate yet further declines in
prices in the near future, prices that
will make the production of spirits
unprofitable, with the prevailing high
prices of timber supplies and the
scarcity and uncertainty of labor. A
careful inquiry into the affairs of the
district revealed the fact that their
cut of boxes was not materially in-
creased during the past box cutting
season and the outlook for the opera-
tors is not very encouraging. Inas-
much as there is no open market in
Florida for naval stores, the matter of
shipping direct to New York was earn-
estly discussed, and the idea met with
a most favorable reception from the
members of the association. The com-
mittee appointed to look into the mat-
ter of storing and holding spirits will
report at the next regular meeting of
the association, to be held In Ocala on
the second Thursday in May (14th),
at 11 a. m., at which time a full at-
tendance is urged.
(Editor's Note.-The Ocala Sub-as-
sociation of Turpentine Operators is
always welcome to the reasonable use
of the columns of the Star to adver-
tise time and object of meetings,
which will assist in getting a large at-
tendance. Almost all of the operators
are subscribers to the paper, and our
friends and patrons.)

County Road Overseer Will Lucius
made his report for March for half a
mile of road, which cost the county
$482.25. Expense for county convicts
was $123.50; county team, $45; P. H.
Nugent's team, $52.50; J. 0. Lucius'
team, $37.50; Alec Fort, $22.50; W. M.

fatal attack of whooping cough and

life with Dr. King's New Discovery.
Our niece, who had Consumption in an
advanced stage, also used this won-

Moonlight's silent hour has come,
The moon is shining bright and

I hear the tinkling of the bells,
And feel the cattle herd is near.
I do not hear another sound,
Except the bells and hoofs,
And anxious look around to see
If. cows had climbed the courthouse
roof.
Ofttimes they had possessed the
square,
Old Sookey. Kate and Fanny.
And wondered if police were near,
And if so---were there many?
But naught upon the silence broke,
Kate stuffed her bell with grass.
And Fannie said. "This is a joke.
I think this thing will last."
Then One Horn said, "There is a

A LENTEN RESOLUTION
The lessons we learn in childhood
Oft live through later years,
Memories of happy hours
Recalled through mists of tears.
Every heart has its burden,
None goes free from care;
"The poor are always with you,"
Let us their burden share.
Some lack food and shelter,
Others peace of mind;
'Tis only God in Heaven
Who knows the needs of mankind.
As we travel along life's highway,
With hearts that are merry or sad,
Let each of us do his utmost
To make his neighbor glad.

BOARD OF PUBLIC INSTRUCTION
The Loard of Public Instruction in
and for Marion county, Florida, met
this the 6th day of April in regular
session, with G. S. Scott, chairman, B.
R. Blitch and J. S. Grantham, present.
Minutes of last meeting were read
and approved.
Upon a petition signed by a major-
ity of the patrons at Candler, J. Y.
McKenney and George H. McCullough
were appointed trustees of the Cand-
ler special tax school district No. 14
to fill the unexpired terms of W. F.
Wallace, deceased, and J. A. Camp-
bell, resigned, the latter having moved
to Ocala.
The resignation of T. B. Snooks, a
trustee of the Weirsdale special tax
district, was accepted and the board
decided to aIpoint no one to fill the
place, as an election is to be held the
6th of June for that purpose.
Mr. John McRae, supervisor of the
Churchill school, having moted from
the community, tendered his resign.
tion, which was accepted, and the Ip
trons are hereby notified to rwe
mend some suitable person to 0 'm'-
unexpired term. i the
An election was called to 'e ..ld I
Ocala on the 5th day ofJ .Iay for the
purpose of electing threw. trustees for
the Ocala special tax school district
and to fix the rate ot mileage to be as-
sessed and collected on real and per-
sonal property tor the succeeding two
years.
Elections we-f also called to be held
at McIntosh and at Wetrsdale on June
6th for the purpose of electing trus-
tees and fixing the rate of millage to
be assessed and collected.
Mr. Lucius P. Farmer appeared and
claimed that the board was due him
$10; that he was contracted with for
six months at $45 per month, but was
unjustly stopped from teaching the
Martel school and sent to the Weir
Park school, where he taught two
months, which did not pay but $40 per
month.
As Mr. Farmer had been stopped at
Martel by the superintendent on the
action of a majority of the trustees,
aind from other complaints filed with
the superintendent, he was requested
to make all his claims against the
board and complaints against the
trustees or superintendent in writing
and file the same with the secretary,
and the board will give the matter
due consideration at its next meeting.
Mr. R. H. Saundefrs. a trustee of the
Dunnellon special school district, al)-
peared and asked aid to assist in
building an additional room to the
school house, as they would have for
another term more than a hundred
pupils and would need three teachers.
The treasurer's report was submit-
,ted, showing total receipts for March
ito be $4383.89, disbursements, $4360.24,
and a balance in the treasury of $37.30.
W. D. Carn, Secretary.

WALKS WITHOUT CRUTCHES
"I was much afflicted with sciatica,"
writes Ed C. Nud, lowaville, Sedg-
wick Co., Kan., "going about on
crutches and suffering a- deal of pain.
I was induced to try Ballard's Snow
Liniment, which relieved me. I used
three 50c. bottles. It is the greatest
liniment I ever used; have recom-
mended It to a number of persons, all
express themselves as benefited by it.
I 'now walk without crutches, able to
perform a great deal of light labor on
the farm." 25c., 50c. and $1 at Anti-
Monopoly Drugstore.

The Ponce de Leon Hotel at St. Au-
gustine closed its doors for the season
Wednesday. The Alcazar will remain
