Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

About Your Eye
Remember the eye is the most se
sitive organ we have. In its normal
condition we canl see at all distances
alike. We can admire the beauties
of nature and everything that is won-
derful in life. The eye is often abused
and neglected, the sight becomes im-
paired and requires artificial aid, and,
as medical attention is of no conse-
quence, there is only one method to
restore the sight to its normal condi-
tion, and that Is by the use of proper
glasses. Dr. Goldstein is in the city
and will remain a few days. This is
the opportunity of your life to get
glasses fitted to your eyes to make
you see properly, and to rest and
strengthen them. Dr. Goldstein is
well known to some of our citizens,
and is highly recommended. Dr. Gold-
stein charges you nothing for exami-
nation or consultation and will give
you the proper advice.
The value of perfect fitting glasses
with reference to health cannot be
over-estimated. Their effect upon
the nervous system is direct, and,
through this, indirectly upon the en-
tire organization.
A few of the troubles which result
directly from neglect in this particu-
lar are Neuralgia. Sick Headache and
Nervous Prostration. In addition to
the general diseases I have enumerat-
, ed, the following local affections of-
ten result from uncorrected errors of
refraction: Conjunctivitis (granu-
lated lids), Keratitis.. with Ulcers of
Cornea, Paralysis of Nerves, Atrophy
of Nerves.
A sad mistake is made by most peo-

A GREAT ANARCHIST PLOT

New York, Feb. 26.-A discovery has just been made in this
city by the police of a gigantic plan for an international conven-
tion of anarchists in London, beginning March 5th, and of the
intended departure from New York today of five delegates, who
represent the "Reds" of this country. A boasting member,
known as Angelo, who is educated, but who is now acting as a
porter, revealed the plot, and defied the police to stop those men.
He says he is a friend of Czolgosz, who killed President McKin-
ley. He declares he wants to assassinate J. P. Morgan and the
Pope. The police have him secure, and will attempt to capture
his confreres. The arrest caused much excitement.

A Few Interesting Items From the
Pretty Little City of Oaks
The "Spinsters' Convention," given
in the town hall Thursday evening,
was a success financially and socially,
a large audience greatly appreciating
both the performance with its many
local hits and the costumes of the
"spinsters." The ladies are busy at
work on another entertainment which
promises to be as good, if not better,
to be given on March 10, to precede
the opening reception and dance of
the Belleview Trading Co.
Mr. E. S. Gardner was the first of
our winter people to leave, starting for
his Pittsburg home Saturday.
On Saturday morning a daughter
was born to Mr. and Mrs. Will Ab-
shier.
The new station in a coat of green
looks very attractive and work on the
interior finish is now being rushed.
Rev. J. M. Deveneau and wife have
moved into the Hall house on Eighth
street. He is the new Baptist minis-
ter.
Mr. E. A. Converse and Mrs. Tidd, of
Ocala, spent Sunday with Mr. and
Mrs. R. C. Ridge.
Miss Marguerite Fryer, S. A. L.
agent at Coleman, spent Sunday with
Mrs. M. J. McPhaul, Belleview's
agent.
Tuesday evening in the town hall
the Methodist and Baptist congrega-
tions combined and tendered a wel-
coming reception to the two new pas-
tors and their wives, the Rev. Mr.
Currier and wife and Rev. J. M. Dev-
eneau and wife. A musical program
was rendered by our best local talent,
followed by cake, lemonade and coffee.

HELP THE HOSPITAL

We wish to call the attention of
housekeepers to our line of fine Fla-
voring Extracts, which are first class
in every respect, and absolutely full
strength.
We give 10 per cent of the pur-
chase price to any charitable organi-
zation and you will find a coupon at-
tached to each bottle.
Our idea in taking this method to
introduce these goods is to help the
Marion County Hospital. However,
these coupons are made payable to
"any charitable organization" and it
rests entirely with the purchaser as
to where the coupon goes.
The price of the extracts fs 15
cents per bottle of One FULL Ounce
and this quantity will go as far as
some of the 25 cent bottles of so-
called "full strength" extracts.
Four flavors Lemon, Vanilla,
Strawberry and Pineapple.

I SOMETHING THAT WILL
DO YOU GOOD
We know of no .vay in which we
can be of more service to our readers
than to tell them of something that
will be of real good to them. For
this reason we want to acquaint them
with what we consider one of the
very best remedies on the market for
coughs, colds, and that alarming com-
plaint, croup. We refer to Chamber-
lain's Cough Remedy. We have used
it with such good results in our fam-

CHAMPION GOLF PLAYER

Mr. George Ford received a dis-
patch this afternoon to the effect that
J. S. Pearson, instructor of the Ocala
Heights Golf Club, in a tournament at
West Palm Beach today, made the
lowest score and broke the record on
those links, making 68. Mr. Pearson
will return to Ocala in a few days.

A PRELIMINARY TRIAL
Was held today by County Judge Bul-
lock in the court house for the bene-
fit of Arthur Hope and Jim Heller, ac-
cused of killing John Graham at Fish
Pond, or Levon, as it is now called.
The testimony pointed to Jim Heller
as the party who fired the fatal shot.
An open pocketknife was found in the
hand of the deceased. There was
quite a crowd of colored folks present
from the vicinity of the killing, many
of whom were at the festival where
the trouble arose. The accused had
no counsel. Ray B. Bullock appeared
for the state. Justice Melia Proctor,
who held the inquest, was a witness.
When Judge Bullock committed
Jim Heller without bail for the mur-
der of John Graham, he fainted and
fenl into a fit, from which Jailer
Smith aroused him, and conducted
him to jail. Arthur Hope was re-
leased, as was Will Franklin.

Each of the chief
organs of the body is a
link in the chain of life.
A chain is no stronger
than its weakest link,
the body no stronger
than its weakest organ,
If there is weakness of
heart or lungs, liver or I
kidneys, there is a weak
link in the chain of life
which may snap at any
time. Often this so-
called "weakness" is -I |
caused by lack of nutri-
tion, the result of disease
of the stomach and other i
organs of digestion and
nutrition. Diseases of
the stomach and its allied
organs are cured by the
use of Dr. Pierce's Golden
Medical Discovery.
When the diseased stom-
ach is cured, diseases of
other organs which seem
remote from the stomach
but which have their
origin in a diseased condition of the
stomach and other organs of digestion
and nutrition, are cured also.
"I was in poor health when I oluaumenccd
taking Doctor Pierce's medicines," writes Mr.
Elmer Lawler, of Volga, Jefferson Co., led. "I
had stomach, kidney, heart. and lung troubles.
Was not able to do any work. I had a severe
cough and hemorrhage of the lungs, but after
using your medicine a while I coiunwcd to
gain in strength and flesh, and stopped cough-
ng right away. Took about six bottles of
goldenn Medical Discovery.' I feel like a dier-
ent person. I gladly recommend your medicine
to all sufferers. for I know it cured me."
The use of Dr. Pierce's Pleasant Pellets
will cure that foul breath.

Hundreds of shots were fired, five

wounded, and seventy-one 'were cap-
tured.

CURED CONSUMPTION
Mrs. B. W. Evans, Clearwater,
Kan., writes: "My husband lay sick
for three months; the doctors stated
he had quick consumption. We pro-
cured a bottle of Ballard's Hore-
hound Syrup, and it cured him. That
was six years ago, and since then we
have always kept a bottle in the

For coughs and colds it has no

BIG SHOW IN TOWN
The world famous Nickel Plate
Show is in the city today, and gave a
performance this afternoon, and an-
other is to be given this evening at
the grounds, on Western avenue, in
the West End. A short parade was
given this morning, and it attracted no
little attention. The show is strictly
up to date, and is entertaining in its
every feature. The elephant which is
carried by the company is one of the
largest in the world.-The Dayton
Press, Dayton, 0., May 15.
Will exhibit in Ocala March 6.

THE DIFFERENCE

A subscriber asks the editor: "Are
you kin to Rufus A. Russell, of the
Metropolis?" Nope. Rufe's from
(Georgy. while we're but two removed
from Ireland. Rafe's a Campbellite.
we're only a heathen, and never got
nearer than to imagine a vain thing.
Rufe earned his money, we borrowed
ours. Rufe's nice looking, we are ug-
ly. Rufe was raised on milk, water
and bran mash, we on sour mash and
gilts. Rufe's mushy, we are tough;
Rufe's had his fun, we are having
ours; Rufe runs a great daily, we but
a small weekly; Rufe's press runs
steen thousand a minute, ours but 1200
an hour; Rufe swears to his circula-
tion, we only affirm; Rufe only thinks
he's the real stuff, we know it.-Palat-
ka News.

SAVED HER CHILD8S LIFE
"In three weeks our chubby little
boy was changed by Pneumonia al-
most to a skeleton," writes Mrs. W.
Watkins, of Pleasant City, O. "A
terrible cough set in, that, in spite of
a good doctor's treatment for several
weeks, grew worse every day. We
then used Dr. King's New Discovery
for Consumption, and our darling was
soon sound and well. We are sure
this grand medicine saved his life."
Millions know it's the only sure cure
for Coughs, Colds and all Lung Dis-
eases. The Anti-Monopoly Drugstore
guarantees satisfaction. 50c., $1.

refrigerator is not quite the same as
the one we made last year; it is bet-

Impossible.
S But that's the way with the White

on the market every year, and better
from year to year.
-i_^ We first find how .good we ea
make It to make It the best; then
K .. ^how cheap without suacrificing any of
fthe goodness. This means not only
the best, but also the best for the
money.
?In making White Mountain Refrig-

enough to go anywhere, and durable enough to last a lifetime, and cheap
enough for anybody.
They embrace every feature that can possibly be desired In any w

CANCER CURED
Mr. W. W. Prickett, Smithfield, Il1.,
writes, September 10, 1901: "I had
been suffering several years with a
cancer on my face, which gave me
great annoyance and unbearable itch-
ing. 1 was using Ballard's Snow
Liniment for a sore leg, and through
an accident I rubbed some of the lin-
iment on the cancer, and as it gave
me almost instant relief, I decided to
continue to use the liniment on the
cancer. In a short time the cancer
came out, my face healed up, and
there is not the slightest scar left. I
have implicit faith in the merits of
this preparation, and it cannot be
too highly recommended." 25c., 60c.

LEWIS-CLARK

As we were about to go to press this morning, vWe received
notice of the marriage of Dr. 0. B. Lewis to Miss Corinne Clark
at Morriston last night. The ceremony was performed by Rev.
J. L. Patillo, of Williston, and took place in the church, which
was handsomely decorated. The guests from far and near were
numerous. The affair was the most brilliant social event that
ever took place in the town. The bride, who is as fair and win-
some as she is good, was resplendently gowned in white silk.
The groom is the M. D. of the village, very popular and a spfen-
did gentleman professionally and socially. Congratulations were
showered upon them and presents innumerable. Best wishes are
in order and the Star extends them heartily.

Mr. and Mrs. Howard, of the Lake-

enjoyable dancing and card parties on
Friday night.
Rev. J. Gordon Van Dyke preached
to the largest audience of the season
on Sunday last. The reverend gentle-
man passed the 81st anniversary of his
birthday on the 24th. Few men of his
age are as active as he. Besides
working hard on his farm six days in
the week, he preaches every Sunday,
driving ten miles on two Sundays of
the month to do so.
Mr. H. E. Lake, of Keen, New Hamp-

old friend, E. S. Upham.
Hon. E. E. Wilson and wife. of Sau-

weeks at the Pleasant Hills House,
left for the North on Tuesday. This
was their third visit here.
We regret to learn that the rumor
of the sale of the property of the Ellis
Lumber Co. was correct, Mr. Ellis
having sold the concern to a Mr.
Goethe, of Collins, Ga., for $36,000.
Mr. Ellis will probably return to his
old home in Hampton county, South
Carolina, but is not fully decided.
Mr. Charles Pfarr, who has been
with Mr. Ellis, left on Monday with his
wife for St. Catherine's, where he has
secured a situation.
Mr. Sebastian Lehman is having a
two story addition to his house built
at the vineyard.
The many friends of our old neigh-
bor, Mr. W. H. Potter, now of Prov-
incetown, Mass., will regret to learn
that he has been critically ill with
heart trouble, but at last accounts was
better.
Rev. J. S. Kedney, I). I).. will preach.
health permitting, on Sunday morning
at 10:45.
