Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

COTTON STILL COMES

Strange as it may seem, cotton con-
tinues to come into the market and
for several days both George K. Rob-
inson and George Giles' establish-
ments have been receiving odds and
ends.
The Star regrets to hear that the
| acreage in the long staple will be
short of last season, many planters
trying watermelons and cantaloupes.
These are all right, but we should not
put all our eggs in one basket.

Dr. G. Goldstten Now in
the City.

The Optical Specialist of Louisville
at the Ocala House-See Him
About Your Eyes
Remember the eye is the most sen-
sitive organ we have. In its normal
condition we can see at all distances
alike. We can admire the beauties
of nature and everything that is won-
derful in life. The eye is often abused
and neglected, the sight becomes im-
paired and requires artificial aid, and,
as medical attention is of no conse-
quence, there is only one method to
restore the sight to its normal condi-
tion. and that is by the use of proper
glasses. Dr. Goldstein is in the city
and will remain a few days. This is
the opportunity of your life to get
glasses fitted to your eyes to make
you see properly, and to rest and
strengthen them. Dr. Goldstein is
well known to some of our citizens,
and is highly recommended. Dr. Gold-
stein charges you nothing for exami-
nation or consultation and will give
you the proper advice.
The value of perfect fitting glasses
with reference to health cannot be
over-estimated. Their effect upon
the nervous system is direct, and,
through this, indirectly upon the en-
J tire organization.
A few of the troubles which result
directly from neglect in this particu-
lar are Neuralgia, Sick Headache and
Nervous Prostration. In addition to
the general diseases I have enumerat-
ed, the following local affections of-
ten raCIIlt from iunearrienrrnt.* drrnt a nt

AN INTERESTING LETTER

From Rev. R. H. Morris, Recently Pas-
tor of the Ocala Presbyterian
Church

Editor Star:

last week's paper

I was glad to see in

the account

you

gave of the coming and the lecture of
Wendling. I feel very glad indeed that
he was well received in Ocala, for you
recall that it was yourself andthe pas-
tor of the Presbyterian church who
were the ones to suggest having
Wendling, and to talk for him. I felt
then as I feel now that the good peo-
ple of Ocala appreciate a good heavy
lecture, and know an orator when
they hear him, and therefore felt that
Wendling, who is "king of the plat-
form," would make a great hit there.
While I am writing, I want to say to
the people of Ocala and vicinity that
they will find in Dr. Lindsay, who is to
succeed me as pastor of the Presbyte-
rian church, a very strong man. He
is the peer intellectually of any
preacher I know, and Ocala should
give him good hearing. His sermons
will not appeal to the frivolous-mind-
ed, nor to the giddy-headed, but the
thinking people-and there are a lot
of them in Ocala-will find him U ser-
monizer of great depth and power. I
bespeak for him much success in his
work there, and will be pained if We is
not given strong support by all who
are interested in the mental and re-
ligious life of your city, not only be-
cause I admire Dr. Lindsay, but also
because my heartstrings are wound
around your citizenry.
Glad to learn that Dr. Powers is so
successful as to be able to ride in an
automobile. Doc is no second class
man and deserves the best in the land.
By this means I greet all my friends
in Florida, for no doubt they all see
the Star, and wish for them much hap-
piness and success in this year of
grace. There are no better people uh-
der God's stars than those bf Marion
county, and I count myself very fortu-
nate to have been amongst them as a
citizen. Yours truly,
R. H. Morris.

gay in giving the Highland Fling.

MR. WHEELER GOT RID
OF HIS RHEUMATISM
"During the winter of 1898 I was so
lame in my joints, in fact, all over my
body, that I could hardly hobble

first application I began to get well,

WAS TOUCHED

Mr. W. M. May, of Orangeburg, S.
C., arrived in the city this morning.
He met with a serious loss, which he
discovered at Jacksonville last night
when he went to buy some fruit. He
found his pocketbook gone. with $65.
Just where he was relieved &f it he
cannot say. Mr. May is related to the
Newberry merchant, and to Mr. Gray,
the merchant at Flemington.

EVERYTHING HAS CONDITIONS

We understand some of the patrons
of the cold storage complain and say
their meat was not properly prepared
for smoking and it spoiled. Investiga-
tion proved that those parties who
complained took tIeir mats home and
in smoking it oveM it, cooked the
meat. Hence thb/le. It was not
the faultf the/curing, ut the defec-
tive smoking. Every par te of meat
brought to cold storage 4 nspect-
ed before it i cepted for' during.
Anything found CL least tainted, or
suspicion of taint, icejected.
An essential to every Neleavor is to
begin rigkt. Our farmer and hog
raisers must get this pork matter
straight in their minds and then no
trouble or misunderstanding will en-
sue. Over-smoking Is worse than-un-
der-smoking. Smoke and heat in the
smokehouse must be uniform all under
the meat to be smoked.

Our up to date Board of County
Commissioners propose to have legis-
lation enacted that will give local op-
tion hard roads sub-districts, so that
any district which desires hard roads
and can't wait for the slow process of
connecting the different sections of
the county, can levy a tax of its own
and make such connections as seem
desirable.

BITTINGER and COMPANY
Proprietors and Publishers.

C. L. BITTINGER,
Editor and Business Manager.

R.'-A. CARROLL, CITY EDITOR.

Not since the Star was established
has its business been so satisfactory.
New. suIbscriptions are rolling in daily,
renewals surprise us, while the job de-
partment was never rushed as it is
now, for all of which we return our
sincere thanks to our friends and pat-
rons. To advertisers we say: The
circulation of the Star exceeds that of
any paper published in Marion county.
BoQok open to inspection.

The State Press Association will
meet at Seabreeze March 24th and
hold a* three days' session. J. W.
White, of the Fraternal Record, Jack-
sonville, Mr. Bergman, business man-
ager'If Freedom, Seabreeze, and C. L.
Bittinker, of the Ocala Star,- met in
Mr. VWite's office in Jacksonville
Tuesday qight and formulated a pro-
gram. Mr. Harris, of the Banner, and
his daughter, Miss Sara, are on the
program.
Major Robertson, of the Live Oak
Crescent, and H. H. McCreary, of the
Gainesville Sun. member of the exec-
utive committee, did not put in their
appearance at the committee meeting
and Secretary Appleyard, of the La'ke
City Index, was kept away by a much
belated train. Editor-in-Chief G. W.
Wilson, of the Times-Union, Jackson-
ville, was invited to be present to de-
liberate with the committee, but a
prior engagement prevented his com-
ing. Mr. Bergman promises the asso-
ciation a pleasant time, as Daytona
will vie with Seabreeze in making the
visit of the editors a memorable one.
The members of the executive com-
mittee were put under many obliga-
tions by the courtesy shown them by
Mr. White. He is not only a bright
and capable newspaper man, but one
ot the most capable of Jacksonville's
promoters and a Jolly good fellow.

When in Jacksonville we had the
pleasure of making the acquaintance
of..Mr, W. 0. Belleaire, a resident of
Ocala a quarter of a century ago. It
was then that lana prices went
a-bdonihng, orange groves werb plant-
ed and their promoters sincerely be-
lieved that in ten years they could sit
under those trees and clip government
bond coupons for a living. Mr. Belle-
aire wias a member of the mercantile
flirnof Bradley, Lewis & Co. and also
a-partner of General Robert Bullock
in the realty business, when they sold
the Beckett place near Belleview for
$12,800 and what was afterwards
known as the Major Green orange
grove, twelve acres, for $42,000.
He inquired after the health of Gen-
eral Bullock, Dave Williams, Ted Mun-
roe, Hamp Chambers, Major Lancas-
ter and other old timers. He expects
to visit Ocala in the course of a week.
Mr. Belleaire is a genial and enter-
taining gentleman and we shall be
pleased to meet him again.

Jacksonville's wonderful recupera-
tion. splendid new buildings and mag-
nificent emporiums of trade are a rev-
elation to every visitor, no master
from what point of the compass he

comes, and an eye opener to every Flo-
ridian who chances within its munici-
pal limits. We can well afford to keep
our eye on the metropolis of the state
and glory in her growth and prosper-
ity. Her captains of industry are nu-
merous, while her daily papers are the
pride and boast of the state.

Remember that this gentleman, one
of the finest opticians traveling in the
South, will only be in the city for a
few flays longer. Don't fail to see him
at the Ocala House.

Miss E. K. Foster, of Philadelphia,
who has been the guest of Miss Geor-

Miss Elizabeth Smith, of Thomasville,
who has been entertained by the Miss-

afternoon for their respective homes.
These charming young ladies made
many friends during their stay. Quite
a crowd of young people were at the

TO HELP HOSPITAL

WILLISTON WILL BE ICED

Messrs. Hester and Harvey are
placing a four ton ice machine in their
village and will attach a cold storage
plant.

Janmss L. Smith, the prosperous Ber-
lin merchant and farmer, was in town
today. He has just completed killing
40 head of hogs and cold storage
them. He is enthusiastic in this won-
derful enterprise. He says it is the
best thing for the farmer that was
ever established in Ocala. He also i
fattened eight head of fine beeves of
his own raising for the Dunnellon mar-
ket and received the top of the mar-
ket price for them. He says farming
is all right if you only know how. And
Jim Smith happens to know how. His
rice mill is ready for service and
those needing cleaning can always'
find him. Mr. Smith says he is selling
more goods than ever and at prices
that draw trade.
Jim Smith is all right. He is the
kind of a man that builds up commu-
nities and makes them prosperous, for
he has just enclosed a forty acre tract
bought some time ago from Dr. Blitch
and will put it in pinders and veTvet
beans, feed hogs and add to the cold
storage product. %

That live wire county commission-
er, Ed L. Wartmann. of Citra, was in
.Jacksonville Monday. A Times-Un-
ion reporter interview him and print-
ed over a column of Mr. W.'s remarks
about Marion and hard roads. He
said we led the state and that our lat-
est good road machinery was the
equal of any built; that solid rock
road could be built at a cost of $1000
a mile, and clay and gravel roads at
one-third this cost, but every wet spell
they suffered, cut through and were
worse than sand roads. Of this he
was tired. Do your work thoroughly
and right and poseterity would arise
and call you blessed. Just so.

The Star had a pleasant call Satur-

He came to attend the school contest
at the armory, as one of his pupils was
among the contestants, Master Ross
Chambers, son of Mr. Hamp Cham-
bers, while another, contestant, Miss
Bettie McCorley, was detained at
home by sickness.
Mr. Worthy reports the McIntosh
school in a flourishing condition and
the pupils doing excellent work. The
enrollment is now 98, with two more
to enter, scoring the 100 mark, against
last session's enrollment of 87.
As the pupils' contest In the armory
has been postponed until Saturday,
March 14, the rest of the county will
have to look well to its laurels, as Mc-
Intosh pupils carried off the principal
prizes last year.
