Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

THE FLORIDA COURT UPHELD

Washington, Feb. 24.-The United
States Supreme Court has decided the
case of James Torrance and others
against the state of Florida. The
charge was that of discriminating
against the negroes in the enforce-
ment of the law by refusing to sum-
mon negro jurors in criminal trials
against the appellants. The court de-
cided that there was no proof of such
discrimination, and affirmed the decis-
ion of the supreme court of Florida.
which upheld the legality of the pro-
ceedings in the trial court.

Dr. G. Goldstein Now in
the City.

The Optical Specialist of Louisville
at the Ocala House-See Him
About Your Eyes
Remember the eye is the most sen-
sitive organ we have. In its normal
condition we can see at all distances
alike. We can admire the beauties
of nature and everything that is won-
derful in life. The eye is often abused
and neglected, the sight becomes im-
palred and requires artificial aid, and,
as medical attention is of no conse-
quence, there is only one method to
restore the sight to its normal condi-
tion, and that is by the use of proper
glasses. Dr. Goldstein is in the city
and will remain a few days. This is
the opportunity of your life to get
glasses fitted to your eyes to make
you see properly, and to rest and
strengthen them. Dr. Goldstein is
well known to some of our citizens,
and is highly recommended. Dr. Gold-
stein charges you nothing for exami-
nation or consultation and will give
you the proper advice.
The value of perfect fitting glasses
with reference to health cannot be
over-estimated. Their effect upon
the nervous system is direct, and,
through this, indiirectcly upon the en-
tire organization.

four mail clerks were burned to death
and several trainmen more or less se-
riously hurt.
W. Walworth, of Cleveland, the
fourth victim, was not killed outright,
but so badly burned that he died with-
in a few minutes. The passengers
saved the life of Joe Coulter, the ex-
press messenger, who was pinned be-
tween express matter, by throwing
snow on the flames that were threaten-
ing him. It is reported no passengers
were killed. The passenger train was
heavily peopled with school superin-
tendents and teachers, en route to Cin-
cinnati., to attend the meeting of the
school directors and teachers being
held there. All the passenger coach-
es but two were burned.

AFTER SWAYNE

Attempt to Impeach the Judge of the
Western District
'Washington, Feb. 25.-The House
committee on judiciary Tuesday heard
the complainants who seek to impeach
Judge Swayne, of Florida. The case
was not gone into at any length, the
committee deciding that there should
be a full hearing before a sub-commit-
tee. This sub-committee consists of
Representatives Jenkins, Powers, De,
Armond, Overstreet and Clayton. The
sub-committee met Tuesday to hear
the charges being made against
Judge Swayne. No details are yet giv-
en out. The charges against Judge
Swayne are brought by President
O'Neill, of the First National Bank of
Pensacola. In brief, O'Neill charges
that the judge is not a resident of
Florida, as the law provides, but of
Delaware. He says that Judge Swayne
is incompetent by reason of his lack
of legal learning, and that by his im-
proper administration of the business
of his high office, he has brought him-
self into disrepute and has caused his
court to be discredited.

TALIAFERRO'S WORK

Gets an Appropriation for $200,000 for
Jacksonville Through the
Senate
Washington, Feb. 25.-The Senate
has passed the omnibus public build-
ing bill, which carries the $200,000 ap-
propriation for the government build-
ing in Jacksonville. This was chiefly
due to the efforts of Senator Taliafer-
ro, who has been unceasing in his ef-
forts to secure this appropriation.
In all probability the passage of the
bill by the Senate insures its going
through the House in its present
shape.

Sara Parramore, a charming young
lady of this city. Rev. J. A. Hendry

the estimation of his employers.

A LEGACY OF THE GRIP
Is often a run-down system. Weak-
ness, nervousness, lack of appetite,
energy and ambition, with disordered
liver and kidneys, often follow an at-
tack of this wretched disease. The
greatest need then is Electric Bitters,
the splendid tonic, blood purifier and
regulator of Stomach, Liver and Kid-
neys. Thousands have proved that
they wonderfully strengthen the
nerves, build up the system, and re-
store to health and good spirits after
an attack of Grip. If suffering, try
them. Only 50c. Perfect satisfac-

goods of the most pleasing and taking
patterns. Keep your eye, ladies, on

THE EASY PILL
DeWitt's Little Early Risers do not
gripe nor weaken the system. They
cure biliousness, jaundioe, constipa-
tion and inactive livers, by arousing
the secretions, moving the bowels
gently, yet effectually, and giving
such tone and strength to the glands
of the stomach, liver and bowels that
the cause of the trouble is removed
entirely. These famous little pills
exert a decided tonic effect upon the
organs involved, and if their use is
continued for a few days there will
be no return of the trouble. Anti-

CURED CONSUMPTION

Mrs. B. W. Evans, Clearwater,
Kan., writes: "My husband lay sick
for three months; the doctors stated
he had quick consumption. We pro-
cured a bottle of Ballard's Hore-
hound Syrup, and it cured him. That
was six years ago and since then we
have always kept a bottle in the
house. We cannot do without it.
For coughs and colds it has no
equal." 25c., 50c. and $1 bottle at
Anti-Monopoly Drugstore.

The handkerchief that Mrs. Roose-
velt sent to Dallas, to be sold for the
benefit of the Free Kindergarten, was
sold for $121, a larger price than any
other article offered for sale. The ill-
mannered people who wanted to send
it back, because they thought it was
"cheap," were severely snubbed. Mrs.,
Roosevelt has an average of 200 ap-
plications a month for things to sell
at fairs, bazars, etc., for charitable
purposes, and if she sent an expensive
article each time, her hubby's salary
would have to be doubled to make
both ends meet.

CANCER CURED

Mr. W. W. Prickett, Smithfield, Ill.,
writes, September 10, 1901: "I had
been suffering several years with a
cancer on my face, which gave me
great annoyance ahd unbearable itch-
ing. 1 was using Ballard's Snow
Liniment for a sore leg, and through
an accident I rubbed some ot the lin-
iment on the cancer, and as it gave
me almost instant relief, I decided to
continue to use the liniment on the
cancer. In a short time the cancer
came out, my face healed up, and
there is not the slightest scar left. I
have implicit faith in the merits of
this preparation, and it cannot be
too highly recommended.' 25c., 50c.

SENATOR BROWN'S WORK

Pension Department. State of Florida.
Tallahassee, Fla., Feb. 23. 1903.
Hon. C. M. Brown, Ocala. Fla.-My;
Dear Sir: I have the honor to ac-;
knowledge the receipt of yours of the j
l8th inst., requesting that I again give
the application for pension of Mr. Al-
exander McQuaig my attention.
In reply I now beg to inform you
that I have complied with your request
and presented same to the board, and'
after due consideration have granted,
same, and it will commence to draw
from December 15, 1902, at rate of $96'
per annum. I will notify him of ac-
tion of the board in a few days.
I am glad to see you taking such an
interest in the old pensioners; in fact,
it seems that the interests of the peo-
ple of Marion county appear to appeal
to your heart, which is certainly very
commendable in you, for they have
elected you to serve them and from
all appearances you are going to fill
the bill in every sense of the word. If
you will pardon the expression and
not get vain over it, would say your
people ought to feel proud of such a
senator, who seems to have their ev-
ery interest at heart. Whenever I can
serve you I hope you will feel at lib-
erty to command me. With best wish-
es, I am yours truly,
C. H. Dickinson,
Secretary of Board.
Note.-Mr. Brown has secured about
twenty pensions on his own efforts.

THE CASH BASIS COMMITTEE

Fish t'ojd. two miles west of Belle-
vi,*w. was the scene of a tragedy last
night. John Graham, a negro,-was
"hot and almost instantly killed at a
festival. Graham delighted in the ti-
tle of "bad man" and invariably made
trouble wherever he went. Knowing
his fighting proclivities the men al-
ways went expecting trouble if they
knew he would attend. Saturday
night was no exception and when Gra-
ham drew his gun it was a signal for
others to do the same, with the result
that the "bad man" lost his life, six
different men firing at him.
Two of the six were arrested and
brought to Ocala and would have had
their preliminary trial today if it had
not been for the severe illness of Jus-
tice Crawford, who had to be taken to
his home.

Chronic Sores

Eating Ulcers, the

And a source of worry, anxiety and endless trouble to those who are anmitR
with them, particularly so when located upon the lower extremities wher
the circulation is weak and sluggish. A gangrenous eating ulcer upon the
leg is a frightful sight, and as the poison burrows deeper and deeper into the
tissue beneath and the sore continues to spread, one can almost ee the lesh

Great running sores and deep offensive ulcers often develop from a simple
boil, swollen gland, bruise or pimple and are a threatening danger always,
because while all such sores are not cancerous, a great many are, and tth
should make you suspicious of all chronic slow-healing ulcers and sores par-
ticularly if cancer runs in your family. Face sores are comuuou and cause th

A RIVAL BY REQUEST .

The very laughable comedy., A Ri-.

opera house last night by our brilliant:
home talent, and it was one of the,
most pleasing of the many plays given I
in Ocala by our local actors, a
number of whom have often been in
the cast. The house was almost filled
last night, and the audience was de-
lighted at the ease and grace with
which the different members of the
cast performed their parts. The net
receipts were $85.05, which will go to-
wards better equipping our already ex-
cellent library and to pay for the peri-
odicals for the current year. We
would like to give an extended report
of the work of each artist, did space
permit.
The play was greatly assisted by the
splendid music by Miss Gertie Peyser,
the talented pianist, and Messrs. W.
W. Condon, R. C. Alworth. ,eon Fish-

The signs of im-
pure blood are easy
to read. Pimples,
boils, and eruptions
generally proclaim
the blood to be imn-

blood and cures dis-

cures scrofulous sores, boils, pimples,
eczema and other defiling and disfigur-
ing diseases.
"It gives me great pleasure to express my
faith in the virtue of Dr. Pierce's Golden Med-
ical Discovery," writes Mr. Ezekiel Ploro, of
Graytown, Ottawa Co.. Ohio. "I suffered every-
thing for two years with humor on my face.
which baffled the skill of some of the most
noted physicians. Was at once advised to go to
the hospital; was doctored there for three
months without sace4m. Came home discour-
aged. Then began to doctor with a 'chemist.'
He also failed to help me. Then I began Dr.
Pierce's Golden Medial Discovery, with no
faith whatever in It, Did it only to please my
