Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

Dr. G. Goldstein Now in
the City.

The Optical Specialist of Louisville
at the Ocala House-See Him
About Your Eyes
Remember the eye is the most sen-
sitive organ we have. In its normal
condition we can see at all distances
alike. We can admire the beauties
of nature and everything that is won-
derful in life. The eye is often abused
and neglected, the sight becomes im-
paired and requires artificial aid, and,
as medical attention Is of no conse-
quence, there is only one method to
restore the sight to its normal condi-
tion, and that is by the use of proper
glasses. Dr. Goldstein is in the city
and will remain a few days. This is
the opportunity of your life to get
glasses fitted to your eyes to make
you see properly, and to rest and
strengthen them. Dr. Goldstein is
well known to some of our citizens,
and is highly recommended. Dr. Gold-
stein charges you nothing for exami-
nation or consultation and will give
you the proper advice.
The value of perfect fitting glasses
with reference to health cannot be
over-estimated. Their effect upon
the nervous system is direct, and,
through this, indirectly upon the en-
tire organization.
A few of the troubles which result
directly from neglect in this particu-
lar are Neuralgia, Sick Headache and
Nervous Prostration. In addition to
the general diseases I have enumerat-
ed, the following local affections of-
ten result from uncorrected errors of
refraction: Conjunctivitis (granu-
lated lids), Keratitis, with Ulcers of
Cornea, Paralysis of Nerves, Atrophy
of Nerves.
A sad mistake is made by most peo-
ple in putting off spectacles too long.
The old advice. "Don't begin specs
until you have to," has done a world
of harm. Anyone can, by squinting
and straining. and looking sharp, go
a long time without spectacles, but
he is sowing scclds of destruction to
his eyes.
Consultation and examination free.
Ocala House, Room 77 and hotel
parlors.

KNIGHTS OF PYTHIAS

A Social Evening With as Gallant Men
as Ever Raised a Lance in
Olden Time
The Knights of Pythias held a "smo-
ker" in their hall last night in
commemoration of the fortieth anni-
versary of their order.
Past Chancellor T. J. Owens was
in the chair and called the Ocala
Lodge No. 19 and its assembled guests
to order. It was the privilege of each
member to invite two persons and the
editor of the Star returns thanks to
Mr. J. G. Spurlin for an invitation and
the social pleasures of the evening.
There were some forty members pres-
ent and the inclemency of the weather
was the only reason several hundred
were not in attendance.
After the cigars had been passed
around (and they were very fragrant
Havanas, Peyser's best), and sociabil-
ity began to thaw out the human side
of those present, Past Chancellor Ow-
ens called for remarks.
Mr. Benton, knight of the throttle,
was the firs$ to be called, the condi-
tions being to tell a story, sing a song,
dance a jig or make a speech, and
those who did not comply were as-
sessed 50 cents. J. Starr Sternberger
was deputized to levy tribute, which
he" did with the persuasive power so
generally accredited to him and which
has made his name a household word
in the community and a holy terror to
delinquents.
George W. Martin sang a song,
"Miss McGinnis' Pie." and was raptu-
rously applauded.
Hon. R. A. Burford was spied in his
office, preparing himself in consulting
legal authorities for several law cases
which he will argue in Jacksonville to-
day and tomorrow, and being one of
the charter members of the K. Of P. In
Ocala was impressed for a talk, which
he gave most acceptably, telling of his
interest and sympathy for the excel-
lent work the order was doing in Ocala
and the representative citizens of the
town, some 150 of them, whose names
were enrolled in the order, and the
cheerfulness with which he would re-
spond to the call to arms when the
hour for refreshments drew near.
Past Grand Chancellor Herbert
Crook made a splendid talk, stating
the origin of the order forty years ago,
founded by Dr. Rathbone in Washing-
ton, and how it had grown to over half
a million members, consisting of 72,-
000 lodges. He said the order in
Florida was in a very flourishing con-
dition and during the past year 972
new members were added. He re-
ferred to its benevolent work in the
education of a little girl, an orphan,
daughter of the order, who as she
grew to the full stature and beauty of
womanhood would exemplify the vir-
tues and beneficent principles of the
association.
Paul Durand favored the audience
with instrumental and vocal music,
and Tullius Biggs gave a German tale.
The pleasing duty of partaking of
oysters and coffee was then in order,
to which ample justice was done,
when story telling and anecdotes fol-

lowed, the leaders in which were J.
Starr Sternberger. Dr. G. Goldstein,
Tex Martin, "Oleaginous" Williams,
R. A. Burford and R. E. Yonge, Sr.
Sternberger made some fine local
hits. which convulsed his hearers.
In the meantime the fragrant Hav-
anas were consumed and the hour of
midnight had arrived. The occa-
sion was a pronounced success and all
present carried home with them rec-
ollections most delightful.
Mr. Rhodes. Mr. E. C. Smith's broth-
! er-in-law from Indiana. was a guest of
I the order.

- "During the winter of 1898 I was so
lame in my joints, in fact, all over my
body, that I could hardly hobble
around, when I bought a bottle of

that I have been able to get and the
only shoe that I have had that would
stand the heavy work that my duties
require is a pair of Tomahawk Brand
shoes which I purchased of the Rack-
et Co. for $1.48. I am now wearing
them and have worn them for sev-
eial months. They are in perfect
condition, when the other and higher
priced 'shoes that I have bought
would have been worn out. Besides,
they are the most comfortable shoes
that I ever wore."

THE EASY PILL

DeWitt's Little Early Risers do not
gripe nor weaken the system. They
cure biliousness, Jaundice, constipa-
tion and inactive livers, by arousing
the secretions, moving the bowels
gently, yet effectually, and- giving
such tone and strength to the glands
of the stomach, liver and bowels that
the cause of the trouble is removed
entirely. These famous little pills
exert a decided tonic effect upon the
organs involved, and if their use Is
continued for a few days there will
be no return of the trouble. Anti-

STETSON UNIVERSITY

Rev. J. C. Porter returned from De-
Land yesterday, where he went last
week to attend the Presentation Day
exercises at Stetson University. Mr.
P. says the trustees of the University
cuatained and endorsed Dr. J. F.
Forbes as president by a vote of 15 to
7. Mr. Stetson refused to abide by
the decision of the majority, hence it
became necessary to retire him from
the presidency of the board of trus-
tees. He was not kicked out, as some
of the newspapers have it, but on ac-
count of his decided opposition to the
policy adopted by a majority of the
board it was absolutely necessary to
elect another man in his place as pres-
ident. He remains a trustee, but
holds no official position. The election
of Dr. W. N. Chaudoin, the Baptist,
Nestor of Florida, to take Mr. Stet-
son's place as president of the board
of trustees will give general satisfac-
tion to all the patrons and friends of
the University.
The University was never more
prosperous and its friends are multi-
plying. Every one seems to regret
the course pursued by Mr. Stetson.
He has done much for the school and
the city of DeLand and his loss will be
keenly felt. But the trustees either
had to turn the University over to him
and let him control it absolutely or try
to get along without his assistance,
and as they are not yet ready to sub-
mit to the one man power, they reluc-
tantly decided to let him go, and look
elsewhere for a benefactor who will
furnish the means to carry forward
the good work. "A Friend," who has
already given $70,000, authorized
President Forbes to draw on him for
$5000 more to make up any deficit that
might occur at the close of the present
school year. The number of students
now in the University far exceeds that
of any previous year and everything is
progressing as smoothly and success-
fully as if no friction had occurred be-
tween Mr. Stetson and the board of
trustees. The institution will continue
to prosper and be the pride of every
true Floridian.

A LEGACY OF THE GRIP
Is often a run-down system. Weak-
ness, nervousness, lack of appetite,
energy and ambition, with disordered

regulator of Stomach, Liver and Kid-
neys. Thousands have proved that
they wonderfully strengthen the
nerves, build up the system, and re-
store to health and good spirits after
an attack of Grip. If suffering, try
them. Only 50c. Perfect satisfac-

Mr. W. W. Prickett, Smithfield, Ill.,
writes, September 10, 1901: "I had
been siufflring several years with a
cancer on my face, which gave me
great annoyance and unbearable itch-
ing. I was using Ballard's Snow
Liniment for a sore leg, and through
an accident I rubbed some ot the lin-
iment on the cancer, and as it gave
me almost instant relief, I decided to
continue to use the liniment on the
cancer. In a short time the cancer
came' out, my face healed up, and
there is not the slightest scar left. I

CURED CONSUMPTION
Mrs. B. W. Evans, Clearwater,
Kan., writes: "My husband lay sick
for three months; the doctors stated
he had quick consumption. We pr6-
cured a bottle of Ballard's Hore-
hound Syrup, and it cured him. That
was six years ago, and since then we
have always kept a bottle in the
house. We cannot do without it.
For coughs and colds it has no
equal." 25c., 50c. and $lAottle at

THE GERMAN LAST NIGHT

The german given last evening atL
the armory was the most beautiful and4
elaborate of this season.,- Prof. North-
cutt had artistically decorated the ar-
mory with bunting, flags and palmetto.
The spacious hall presented a beauti-
ful scene, with the tastefully shaded
lights shedding a soft glow over all
the loveliness.
The program cards were of blue,
tied with red ribbon, decorated with
cherries and George Washington
(hopping down the cherry trees, mak-
in- a dainty souvenir. Eight regular
dances took place Irst, after which a
most tempting collation was served by
Mesdames Weathers and Chazal.
Thef the german began, led by Mr.
Stephen Jewett and Miss Esther Wear
others. The figures were very pretty
and Mr. Jewett deserves much credit
for man* new figures introduced and
much of the success of this, a most
perfect german.
"The lamps shone o'er fair women
and brave men, and all went merry as
a marriage bell." The 'weather with-
out and the scene within made a most
striking contrast, enhancing the pleas-
ure of the evening.
The ladies present and their cQa-
tumes were, Mrs. Woodrow, in white
silk with cream applique trimmings;
Mrs. Watson, in blue mousseline and
black velvet trimmings; Miss Emma

Mr. Hewitt, of Maine, who is spend-
ing the winter, at the Owen cottage,
on the lake, has bought the large
store : and dwelling formerly belong-

on his lake front near Dr. Eagleton's
place for a winter home for himself
and brother.
There has never been so great ac-
tivity in the agricultural line for
years as this spring among the far-
mers. Watermelons, onions, pota-
toes and velvet beans seem to be the
principal crop for market, while good
crops of everything else for home
consumption are being planted.

If we could know that this day were
our last.
Our very last;
That with the shadows of the sinking
sun
Our busy hands would find their work
was done,
All labor past-
Would not our yearning hearts retreat
and pray
For only one more day?
Ah, would today seem but a trifle then,
Of little worth;

Unnoticed, silent, as the winter snow
