Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

MITCHELL TO THE MINERS

John Mitchell, president of the
United Mine Workers, has issued an
address to the miners to do their best
to supply the public with the needed
coal. Now if some one would set the
mine owners on blocks of ice until
they reduced their prices to a decent
limit, everything would be lovely.

WILL LOAD TWO SHIPS

Business is Rushing in Florida's New
West Coast Port
S'apt. .Ino. L Inglis, the genial pres-
ideii. of the D)unnellon Phosphate Co.,
was in town today, stopping at the
i Ocala House. The Star man asked the
I Captain about phosphate shipments
Sand was told that. the company would
lhavec two ships in the basin off Port
Inglis within the next few days, one
of which is expected to take on the
largest cargo yet shipped by the com-
[pany from the-ir own port. Capt. In-
| glis said the government steamer
Hillisboro. a beautiful little vessel, is
at the port while her officers, a fine set
of men, are engaged in making a sur-
vey of the channel from where the
Dunnellon Co. left off dredging out to
the pool. When their survey is made
and rp')ort submitted, the government
will expend the $15,000 appropriation
scored by Senator Mallory in dredg-
ing, and if it is not enough-well,
there will probably be another one
made. for the future of Port Inglis is
too big and bright for the government
to let it want for anything.
('apt. Inglis told the Star man that
his company was getting their big cen-
tral plant. one of the largest in the
hard rock section. in readiness to re-
suime mining, which will Ibe done in a
short time. In addition to this, the
company is putting up two new mod-
ern plants near Holder, between that
point and Felicia, and will build a
third one somewhere in that vicinity,
on one of the company's fine deposits,
its exact location not yet having been
decided. The Dunnellon Co. will from
this on push things for all they are
worth.

the close of the present season make
a tour of Cuba. ThMs great club of la
dy baseball players will make their
appearance in Ocala on Friday, Janu-
ary 16th. when they will play the
Ocala team. All lovers of the great
national game should not fail to wit-
ness this game, as it will be the only
novelty of the season. The game will
be played' on the South Third street
'ro(und1l. and will be enclosed with a
large canvas fence, including a fine
i1an(d stand, nicely covered, with a
-eating capacity of 2000 people, mak-

The ()Ocala team played a game with
the "'Iloomers-" three years ago and

Suffering from Cold in the North
NPw York, Jan. 14.-New York is
shivering in the coldest weather of the
winter. Added to the terrors of the
situation there is a threatened coal
famine, and the price of fuel of any
description is soaring higher. If re-
lief comes it will be but temporary, for
the weather bureau says a storm is
forming in the Northwest, and should
reach here Thursday or Friday.
Several deaths are reported as the
result of the cold. The suffering is in-
tense. and the charitable organizations
are unable to cope with the situation.
Representatives of the coal roads
met with Mayor Low Tuesday morn-
ing at the latter's office, in response. to
a call sent them. asking them and the
operators to assist him to devise s )in
plan to increase the city's coal supply.
The retail price advanced another dol-1
lar today.

SEIZED TEN CARLOADS

Tuscola, Ill., Jan. 13.-Two hunt'rel
citizens of this city today distributed
ten carloads of coal, which were
seiz-.Jl yesterday. There was not a
pound of coal in the coal yards, and
the people became frantic when they
saw the incoming cars. The mayor
refused to interfere. The mealiure is

A CHILLY EXPERIENCE

Mr. W. H. Clark, of the Montgomery

thrilling experience on Orange Lake
last Tuesday. He came up here to

the lake. He went out on the lake

I he thought that he would save some.
miles by pulling his boat upon the isi

all right until he put the boat in the
water again and noticed that where he
was standing was sinking. He became
a little excited, made a quick step to
get into the boat, struck one side of!
it and turned it over and it sunk in
about thirteen feet of water. Hei
made several jumps and reached a.
solid place on the island. His boat.
gun and everything he had went to
the bottom. He said that he had a pe-
culiar feeling to come over him, out in
the middle of Orange Lake~on a float-
ing island, that was liable to sink at
any time, surrounded by thirteen foot
water. But while he was wondering
what he would do, the boat, which was
a light canvas one, rose to the top. He
fished it in, turned it over, got in it
and put straight back to Island Grove:
said that he had enough ducks for this
time. He came in a cold but wiser
