Abstract:
The Ocala Banner was founded in 1883 as a successor to the Ocala Banner-Iacon, itself the product of a merger between the East Florida Banner and the Florida Iacon. In 1890, the Ocala Banner became a daily. Over the years it bore alternate titles: the Banner, the Daily Banner, and the Ocala Daily Banner. Situated in rural Marion County, the Ocala Banner covered farming, business, and civic issues in Ocala, where the Freeze of 1895 had devastated the citrus industry and paved the way for diversified agriculture and the growth of tourism. The most important of the early editors of the Ocala Banner was Frank E. Harris, a veteran of the Confederate army, who ran the paper in the 1890s. Other editors included T.W. Harris, who had published several other newspapers in Ocala, and C.L. Bittinger, who before moving to Florida had served as a commander in the Grand Army of the Republic. In 1895, the Ocala Evening Star surfaced as a rival to the Ocala Banner. Beginning in 1897, it also appeared in a weekly edition, the Ocala Weekly Star. During an address to the Ocala Rotary Club, R.N. Dosh, editor of the Evening Star in the 1920s and 1930s, recalled that the “Star first saw the light of day in the press room of the Florida Baptist Witness”, founded in 1884 as the weekly press organ of the Florida Baptist Convention, a branch of the Southern Baptist Convention. Former competitors, the Ocala Evening Star and the Ocala Banner joined in 1943 to form the Ocala Star-Banner, which remains the daily newspaper of Marion County.

THE OLD STORY

The independent miners of anth4-
cite coal have notified the railroad
coal mining companies that tney
withdraw from the agreement to sell
coal at $5 a ton in New York City,
because they can sell all they can
mine at $10 a ton because of the
great scarcity in that city. the me-
tropolis being their largest market.

AND PORT INGLIS

Articles Descriptive of the Great In-
dustry and the New Port Through
Which It Finds an Outlet
The Star is in receipt of a copy of
the November American Fertilizer
Magazine, the leading journal of its
class on the manufacture and appli-
cation of fertilizers, phosphate min-
ing, etc. In this number are two ar-
ticles by by our young and talented
fellow citizen, Sidney E. Hiller, one
on the Florida phosphate field, the
outlook for more business and higher
prices and transactions in land, in
Marion and adjacent counties, of i
plants and mines. Also a very graph- I
ic and' entertaining article on Port
Inglis, which even at this early stage
of the game has wrought a revolu-
tion in the shipment of phosphates
at greatly reduced rates for the Dun-
nellon Phosphate Co., which under-
took this stupendous work and com-
pleted it at an expense of a million
dollars. This splendid article is il-
lustrated by two cuts, showing Port
Inglis, Fla., headquarters of the Port
Inglis Terminal Co. Also a view of
the bay seven miles distant, where
in a deep pool or harbor, with thirty
to sixty feet of water and land locked
from storm, vessels ride safely at av-
chor and are loaded. Another cut
shows the map of the harbor of Port
Inglis, the mouth of the Withlanoo-
chee river, where it enters the Gulf
of Mexico, the channel, landing ba-
sin and harbor buoy.
This great and important business.-
enterprise was the conception of
Capt. John L. Inglis, vice president
and general manager of the Dunnel-
Ion Phosphate Co., and Mr. Auchin-
closs of New York, president of the
company, readily saw, when Captain
Inglis' plans were detailed, that it
was no idle dream and he was
prompt in co-operating with Captain
Inglis in carrying out his designs.
The results have proved the wisdom
and rare business judgment display-
ed in making the plans a success.
The Star congratulates Mr. Sid Hil-
ler on the excellent manner in whi :h
the article was written and predicts
for him a bright and promising ca-
reer as a writer if he will only sct
hs heart to it.

THE OCALA POSTMASTER

the workings of the free delivery

Arnow is desirous of inauguraL;ng

"The postoffice management arnd

was the response. "We have three

to the old system for anything.
"Not only is there an advantage to

TROUBLING THE TRUSTS

Washington Advices Intimate That
Teddy is Still After Them with
a Stuffed Club
Washington, Jan. 10.-President
Roosevelt's statement indicating the
suggestions made by Attorney Gen-
eral Knox. which he thinks should be
embodied In an anti-trust law, with
the commutation of the attorney
general to the House Judiciary com-
mittee on the subject of legislation
to restrain the trusts, and Senator
Hoar's great speech in the Senate
last Tuesday afternoon, have all com-
bined to renew activity in Congress
in favor of legislation.
The President's virtual reaffirma-
tion of his belief that it is the duty
of Congress to pass an anti-trust bill
at the earliest possible moment, con-
veying, as it does, the intimation
that. if this Congress fails in its ob-
vious duty he will call an extra ses-
sion of the next to take up the trust
subject, has startled and amazed
those members of the Senate who
have convinced themselves that noth-
ing would be done, at least for a year
or mor-e.
It is not what Mr. Roosevelt says,
but what he suggests, that has
caused alarm in the trust camp. He
has shown that he is not at all satis-
fied with the situation, and that the
great cause of the people against the
combinations of wealth is not toie'b,
sacrificed because a few members of
the Senate are themselves interested
in trusts and the maintenance of
trust supremacy.
His statement is an intimation in
fact, if not in words, that he is in the
fight to stay, and that, though the
Senate may adopt dilatory methods
which will exhaust the session be-
fore a bill can be passed, it is still

RESOLUTIONS OF RESPECT

Ocala, Fla., Jan. 9, 1903.
To the Officers and Members of
Tulula Lodge No. 22. 1. 0. 0. F.:
Your committee appointed to draft
resolutions expressive of the feel-
ings of the lodg' regarding the death
of our late brother, Dr, R. L. Robb,
who contracted the cold that caused
his death while representing our
grand body at the convention of the
sovereign Grand Lodge as Grand
RIepresentative, can hardly find
words to fittingly express our deep
borrow and regrets that he should be
/called from his field of labor where
he was so much needed, working al-
ways for the adi ancement of the Or-
der and the e'?vation of mankind.
He will be alwe vs a true and beauti-
ful example of one who in example
as well as prec pt showed his belief
in the "Fatherhe od of God and broth-
erhood of man."
The older members of Tulula
Lodge No. 22, 0. 0. F., can look
back and remer ber the time that,
had it not. been for our noble broth-
er's encourage ent and his visit to
our lodge at th( critical moment and
donating money from his own pock-
et, when he could ill afford it, to aid
this lodge, our 1odge would have sur-
rendered its chi.rter and Odd Fellow-
ship in Ocala would have been a
thing of the pa ;t.
Therefore we can consider our
lodge today a living monument to
the memory of one of God's noble-
men, Brother R. L. Robb. Therefore
we submit the following:
Whereas, the Almighty God, in His
wisdom, has seen fit to remove from
our order our beloved Brother R. L.
Robb; and
Whereas, the entire order will miss
his kindly smile and wise and noble
.-eomnsels; be it resolved:
That in the death of Brother Robb
the I. 0. 0. F. has lost a faithful,
noble and pure hearted member and
Florida a true and loyal citizen.
That we mourn the death of Bro.
Robb. whom to know was to loie:
and that we extend to his bereaved
'family our sincere and heartfelt sym-
pathy and condolence in their sad
and irreparable loss.
That "our charter and altars be
draped for sixty days and a page in
our minutes be dedicated in loving
memory and profound respect for our
deceased brother.
That these resolutions be spread
on the minutes of our lodge and a
copy be furnished his bereaved fam-
ily as a slight token of the love and
high esteem we entertained for their
loved one, who received the sum-
inons. "Well done, good and faithful
servant."

The STORY of a STOVE
Like the Iron King is interesting to every woman.
The Iron King is a stove with a reputation. For years it has been
known far and wide as the most scientifically constructed stove in use
It is an incomparable cook stove-an absolutely faultless baker.
Every Iron King cook stove has the Iron King bridge flue. This Sue
allows all the oven plates to heat evenly. Every housewife understands
the importance of this feature.
No one has ever bought an Iron King and been dissatisfied. No one
can be.
Come in and examine the stove itself and find out exactly why this
is so.
