Cabbage Black Speck and Variety Trials, 1977-78
J. M. White and J. 0. Strandberg
Assistant Horticulturist and Associate Plant Pathologist
We evaluated 66 lines and varieties of hyb i idrV e ie l c bbage in
replicated trials and an additional 52 lines of observational plots for p rformance
and adaptability to Florida fresh market cabba e prod.t~h 1c editions These
tests were carried out under conditions which simulated those encount red in
commercial cabbage production. However, on yf.IAmIiAj51IdfPcli of
insecticides were employed. No disease contr si-m-usi were used. Black
speck and storage ratings were made under conditions which had previously been
shown to enhance the development of storage disorders, i. e. 4 C for 14 days.
Seedbeds were sown on October 12 and 24, 1977, after hot water treatment
of all seed lots. Plants were transplanted on November 17 and 30, at AREC-
Sanford, on Myakka fine sand previously fumigated with Shell DD to control
nematodes. A randomized incomplete block design was used with 4 replicates
of 50 plants for each entry. Observational lines were planted in a single row, 50
feet long, and were not replicated. Plants were spaced 11.5 inches apart in 30-
inch rows. Harvesting began on February 13, 1978, and was concluded on April
4.
Data on resistance to black speck as well as several horticultural
characteristics were obtained. Results are summarized in Tables 1 and 2.
Disease ratings for Downy mildew and Alternaria were noted only if plants
showed symptoms. A negative rating does not indicate resistance. Black rot
was introduced in some seed lots and rapidly spread to the entire planting.
Frequent and extensive rains spread the disease uniformly over the entire trial.
Disease damage ratings were made at 120 days after transplanting and are
averages for 4 replicates. These ratings accurately reflect the relative
susceptibility or tolerance to black rot. Black rot ratings on damage to mature
heads was a quantitative rating.
We have included several categories which were rated subjectively, such as
flavor, toughness, wrapper leaf protection, and mechanical harvesting index
which may be helpful in evaluating varieties. We consider the varieties Rio
Verde, Gourmet, and Abbott & Cobb #5 as standard varieties which presently
best fit Florida growers requirements as evidenced by their large percentage
of the total amount of seed purchased in Florida. Experimental lines should be
compared with these hybrids if use in Florida is anticipated.
Several weeks of unusually cold temperatures with several hours of temp-
eratures in the mid-20's caused little freeze damage to the crop. Bolting was
not a problem.

Days to Harvest Number of days from transplanting to harvest.
50 lb. Units/head Based on 50 pounds units. Maximum theoretical yield = 836
units/acre (assuming 2-4 lb. heads).
Polar diameter and Core length measured in centimeters.
Holding quality (in the field), Plant uniformity, Head uniformity, Head cover,
Mechanical harvest index, Flavor, Firmness, Toughness, and Internal quality -
l=poor; 2=fair; 3=good; 4=very good; 5=excellent.
Plant color BG=blue green; DBG=dark blue green; DG=dark green; G=green;
LBG=light blue green; LG=light green; R=red; V=variable; YG=yellow green.
Head shape F=flat; O=ovoid; R=round; SR=semi-round; P=pointed; V=variable.
Black rot 0=no damage to leaves; 5=severe damage to wrapper, frame and head
leaves. Ratings above 2.0 are unsalable.
Alternaria and Downy mildew S=susceptible; a=means none was observed but
does not indicate resistance.
Storage rating 1=poor storage characteristics with leaves yellow and dessicated,
abundant leaf necrosis; 5=good storage characteristics with little or no change in
leaf color or texture after 2 weeks at 4 C.
Black speck index The average incidence of black speck damage on 20 heads
recorded after 2 weeks of storage at 4 C. 0=no damage; 5=severe damage
extending to the center of the head.
