On Networking # 1

* Farming systems research project inventory is being mailed out to
AUSUDIAP members to help with further identification of project
contact people and specific mailing addresses. Next step is to send
out a brief single-sheet survey questionnaire to all identified
project contacts. Results are expected to be summarized and
published for distribution at the Kansas State Farming Systems
Symposium in October.

* Requests to be placed on the FSSP Newsletter mailing list
continue to be received by the editor. Total circulation exceeds
5,000, primarily to people involved in farming systems activities.
The mailing list will be purged later this year, with brief biodata
and relevant interests to qualify. This is both to be able to
quantify the newsletter network and target mailings and to be able
to mesh with CIMMYT mailing lists, providing both FSSP and CIMMYT
with greater utility in their newsletters.

* ON DEMAND, a domestic news sheet for FSSP support entities, has been
created and the first issue mailed to program leaders and
administrative coordinators. First of many to cane, on a variety
of subjects of interest to SEs not just specific countries ... will
cover all sorts of demand. Some information will be "iffy" but
will be followed by updates. Idea is to put SEs in the mainstream.
Early in the process.

* Bilateral contracts? CRSP or BIFAD activity? Domestic
Farming Systems Projects? The FSSP Newsletter is a good way to keep
others abreast of your activities and involvement. Anything from a
paragraph or so to a feature project profile. Call Steve
Kearl (904)392-1965 with your ideas.

* The FSSP is developing an Electronic Mail network to link SEs
and the Core Staff. We will be using the VAX 11/750 here at the
University of Florida to pass timely and relevant information to
the rest of the FSSP network. Almost any micro-computer with
a communications software package will be able to access this
service. For further details, contact Jim Dean at (904)392-2309.

* FSR Practitioner Tool Kit List. The FSSP will soon have ready a
"prioritized" list of items which field agronomists in FSR projects
have found in their work overseas very useful. All SEs will be
receiving the practitioner tool kit list shortly. However, if you
are interested in the list, but outside of the FSSP/SE network, let
Dan Galt know and a list will be sent to you.
