REGULATING COTTONSEED IMAL INTLKE, BY ITH USE OF SALT
VT. G. Kirk
Range Cattle Station
Ona, Florida
The nutrient most lacking in winter pastures is protein. The problem is to feed
a high protein supplement such as cottonseed meal in such a manner that all animals
have an equal chance of getting the quantity needed to maintain them in good pro-
duction. The following suggestions may be helpful in starting a cottonseed meal-
salt feeding program.
1. All classes of cattle can be fed. It is a safe procedure provided cattle
have access to water and plenty of forage. Salt is not injurious if all the
essential nutrients are supplied.
2. The amount of cottonseed meal eaten daily can be regulated by the percent
of salt in the mixture.
3. Mixtures to use at start of feeding period:
Cottonseed Keal Mixture Parts per 100 Pounds
Fed Daily Per Cottonseed Common Complete
Animal _Meal Salt Mineral
1O pound 7 15 10
lo pounds 80 10 10
2.0 pounds 85 10 5
h. Thorough mixing of real, salt and complete mineral is necessary.
5. Six-foot bunk is sufficient space for h0 cattle of quiet disposition.
6. Self-feeding mixture will permit all animals to get feed.
7. Cattle eat more salt as they become accustomed to meal-salt, and frequent
observation is necessary during first two weeks of feeding to regulate the
amount of salt in the mixture. It may be necessary to change formula from
month -to-month to meet feed conditions in a pasture.
8. A complete mineral should be used to replace part of the salt, This will
insure that cattle will get sufficient calcium, phosphorous and minor elements
for body requirements.
9. If energy feed is needed in addition to protein replace one-half the
cottonseed meal with an equal amount of citrus meal or other finely Pround energy
feed.
10. Vater should not be more than one-half mile away from feed bunk.
