Almonte.was in this city, some years since as the Rep-

great many persons interested in Texas, to whom he
sated that he would make such representations to his
government, that no difficulties should ever arise. He
was: treated with the greatest kindness and attention.

of Judge Thompson of this city, ilho had dived pretty
deeply in'Mexican claims, having bought up larg; sumss

Thompsoh sold out his property on Staten island,
and embarked with his family for Texas, where he set-

army against the Texians, and at the battle of San Ja.
into was taken prisoner, and in this situation was seen
by Thompson, who made every effort to have hin pa-

MIoRE RIOTS AT THE ASTOR HousE.-Bulhimore is
eclipsed-Vicksburg outdone-and Cincinnati must
hide its diminished head. The Astor House, of N-ew
York, takes the lead in r:Gting of all other establish-
ments in the country.
On Tuesday afternoon a baker of Boston crackers,
by the name of Win. Bond, presented his bill to the Astor
employees for $29, 50. There not having been a riot or
row there for threerdays, they felt wolfy about tile head,
and so a dispute took place about the matter. Ilighi
words succeeded. 'The baker was unceremoniously
thrust out of doors, lie being neither a count, nor a lord,
nor a planter-merely a beggarly baker. On reaching
the steps of tile entrance, a scuffle took place great
crowd assembled, and a general row was expected. All
the hackmen round tire Park were on the ground in
an instant, and if tirtu'.le had not interfered serious
affair night have been the consequence. Boyden, we
believe, had to pay tilhe baker, nid back out of his
crackers as fast as lie could.
The management of hire Astor House is getting tobe
a serious blot upon the character of New York. Every
week some affray or riot takes place at this establish-
ment. The truth must be told. Boyden is unfit for
his post, and the sooner lie gives it up tile better'. The
great name and character of the Tremont House, Bos-..
ton, was given by Stetson, not Boyden. Stetson is one
of the best holel managers in thie east. Boyden was
never fit for any thing else than going to market, and
blowing up the butchers and parsley women. It re-
requires a gentleman, and "a man of science, to be at
the head of such a house as the Astor.
John Jacob Astor make a change as N'as as possible.

In addition to the Lead mine so recently opened in St.
Lawrence Co, N. York, and which we are informed, is
likely to prove of great value to its owners, another is
about being put into operation in Shelburn, N. IH. We
have seen samples of thie ore, and thie certificates of
practical men and chemists, who haves examined and
analyzed it.-We can have but little doubt of its being
equally as valuable as the vein of St. Lawrence Co.,
which we are informed has sold, or is selling,in shares,
at three hundred thousand dollars, or over. Doubtless,
the present high price of lead, and of W thite Lead, is a
cause of these Lead mines of tire Northern regions be
ing put in operatioun.-Yet it is a well known fact that
tlime Lead mines of the Narthernt regions are not less
valuable in tlleir properties than are those of the Sotulh.
The Northern mines generally produce more or less sil-
ver, whilst the Southern are of a soufer kind, and pro-
duce little or none of that precious metal.
We have seen the certificate of an analysis made by
a practical chemist, who finds the ore of the Shelburn
mine it) be from 78 to 82 per cent. We are further in-
fornimd that thi; property is flirmned into a Slock, and put
into tie hands of three TrustesF, in shares of $100 each.

TH'E B~.ENT ACCIrE.NT.-Every body is talking of
the recent accident, but let one point not be forgot. Is
it not high tlimet that our laws relative to taking life
were enflbrced, not only as regards individuals, but in-
corporate bodies ?
There is a law (f the land which enacts that whoso-
ever takes tlhe life of a human being shall become a
forfeit to the state.
The steamboat Boston on Tuesday morning run over
the Jackson ferry boat and sunk her, causing thereby,
the tntimely end of many unfortunate beings. Cant
any body tell in whom is invested the prosecuting pow-
er? Let the law be enforced, and let this boat be made
an example of, and there will be fewer boats run down,
boilers burst, and casualties of all kinds on the water.
Example is stronger than precept.
With regard te bursting of boilers would it not be
well to license all engineers, and to grant licence to
none but scientific ones? Physicians are n(t allowed
to practice without a diploma, and if needful, to have
these se'fety guards where but one life is endangered at
a lime, how much worse sO when hundreds are at a
stake ?

stating that the Ferry boat was backing water at the
lime oflthe accident, and tiat thle Boston did not stop
her wheels until so near that a meeting was unavoida-
ble. Capt. Townsend and Mr. Manchester the Pilot,
were held to bail in thesum of $10,000 each, wlhiclt was

in novels and light literature, which uare received at the
Herald Office, and either to write or communicate her
impressions and opinions of the merits of each work

Our attention is so much occupied with other affairs,
that we have no time whatever to spend in .reading tie
new fugitive publications of the day. Persons and par-
ties-public measures and interests, take off oar atten-
tion front r.e books. In a critical point of view, the

is fitar superior to that of the other sex. It is said of i
