WATERFRONT EWS SC T O B E R 2 0 0 4 Y e a r 2 1 I s u e 7 Columbus Day Regatta gains sponsor, rookie seminar Photo/Courtesy COLUMBUS DAY REGATTA Last year's Columbus Day Regatta on Biscayne Bay: this year the event gains a commercial sponsor and a seminar for rookies. n West Marine lends its name to 50-year-old race By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL Waterfront News Writer The Columbus Day Regatta will reach the half-century mark when one of the state's oldest sailboat races gets underway on Oct. 9. "It's amazing that this race has been around for so long," said Margie Benziger of Miami, a regatta committee mem- . ber. "It's such a tradition. We have people come from all over the state and from out of state. It's very pretty. When you see the boats sailing down Biscayne Bay, it's very impressive." The 50th regatta sets sail at 10 a.m. on Biscayne Bay, near the Rickenbacker Causeway in Key Biscayne. Entrants will race to Elliot Key in Biscayne National Park and spend the night. The following day, the boats will head back. Fees are $75 for those registering before Sept. 26. After that date, the cost increases to $90. A skipper's meeting for entrants will be held Oct. 8 at the Coral Reef Yacht Club in Miami. A representative from Biscayne National Park.will speak about the park's rules for anchoring. A talk on safety will be conducted by a repre- sentative from West Marine. The official title of the race has been changed to the West Marine 2004 Columbus Day Regatta. It is the first time in the event's history that a commercial sponsor has been attached to its name, said Larry Whipple, race committee chairman. Last year, about 140 entries participated in the race. This year, organizers are striving to attract 200 or more boats, Whipple said. To draw contenders, committee members have added a new seminar for rookies and are expanding the number of raffle prizes at the awards banquet. "We're trying to make it extra special," Whipple said. The seminar was held on Sept. 21 at the Coconut Grove SSailing Club in Coconut.Grove. "People have always talked about how they would like to race, but they are not a racer," Benziger said. "We thought we would offer a seminar to walk people through the competition." Following the regatta, an awards ceremony will be held Oct. 16 at the Coral Reef Yacht Club. Trophies are different each year and their design is always kept secret. To commemorate the 50th anniversary, Benziger promises this year's trophies "are spectacular." For the second year in a row, an award will be given to the rookie who finishes with the best time. In addition to a trophy, the winner will receive a two-night stay at the Mutiny Hotel in Coconut Grove, which is sponsoring the award, Benziger said. The awards party will also feature a performance by the MAST Academy Steel Drum Band and free samples of Gosling Rum. Prizes in the raffle will include vacation packages at the Cheeca Lodge & Spa in Islamorada and The Mayfair House Hotel in Coconut Grove; a sailing lesson provided by Shake-A-Leg Miami; two Kooleraire portable air con- ditioning units from ACforSale Inc.; a high-tech Sailcloth Briefcase donated by UK Sails; a complimentary visit to Curves Ladies Gym; two Columbus Day Regatta 50th anniversary prints suitable for framing; and merchandise from West Marine. "In the past, we had two or three raffle prizes," Benziger said. "But this year we have tons. We went all out for the 50th anniversary. Our committee worked extra hard to find sponsors and donations." Although several new additions are afloat for this year's regatta, it's likely there will be one mainstay: hundreds of boaters spending the weekend in Biscayne National Park. The visitors are not associated with the regatta, yet their sometimes rowdy behavior has unfairly tainted the event. In early September, city commissioners approved allo- cating $350,000 to complete the project. If plans go as sched- uled, the eatery should be finished and open for business 14 months from now, said Ivan Pato, Dania Beach city manager. The restaurant will be owned by the city and leased to Ute and Sven Stork, former owners of the Bistro La Tavemetta in Fort Lauderdale. The Storks have a 10-year agreement with the City of Dania Beach. The restaurant is expected to specialize in seafood, with a casual menu for lunch and more upscale entrees at dinner, Pato said. Before the old pier was devastated by Hurricane Andrew, it had housed a small eatery that served hot dogs and hamburgers, Pato said. When the new pier was built, elected officials envi- sioned the restaurant project as.a draw that would bring more people to the beach, he said. Presently, the only dining spot is a food stand that sits just south of the pier. Having the restaurant will give more dining options to residents and visitors who want a beachfront view. Support for the project is wide spread. "It's expected SLeaning Posts T-Tops SLadders *Railings Arches Towers NEW RIVER WELDING AND FABRICATION 3100 State Road 84 Unit 203 Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 954.321.6174 m to be a landmark destination," Pato said. The city took out a loan for $650,000 that officials were told was necessary to build the restaurant. But years later, an additional $350,000 is required to cover the rising costs of construction. The extra funds will be taken from the city's budget, Pato said. Because of this year's particularly rough hurricane season, city commissioners approved funding the $350,000 provided that the restaurant can be insured and that an engineer is hired to design a sturdy structure. The condition of securing insurance has already been met, Pato said. Hurricane Andrew destroyed the Dania Beach Pier.It was later rebuilt under stricter South Florida building codes created after the storm. "Hurricanes remind all of us of the vulnerability of liv- ing in South Florida," Pato said. But he is confident that the pier's eatery will be able to withstand an Andrew-type storm. "I'm more concerned about some of the older buildings in the city than the restaurant, which will built to the new South Florida build- ing codes," Pato said. With the added funding approved by city commission- ers, the next step will be to produce architectural and engi- neering drawings, then seek bids from construction com- panies, Pato said. Hurricane Andrew destroyed the Dania Beach Pier. It was later rebuilt under stricter South Florida building codes created after the storm. The restaurant will be one level instead of two stories, as originally planned, Pato said. "Conditions for building on coastal areas have been updated and changed," he said. "The city needed to build a different type of building for the pier to support it." st FORMANCE MARINA * Travelift Service to 60 Ft. * Fiberglass, Gelcoat & Painting * Mechanical Repairs. * Survey Haulouts * Bottom Painting * 5 minutes to Inlet S4I )X.lterlux. yachtpaint.com 90 SE 15th St., Ft. Peterson thought he had lost the film until Julie Meek, whom he calls his business and life partner, discovered the negatives. The restored images have since become part of an exhibit that captures what Peterson calls "a slice of America's nautical heritage." The photographs will be shown for the first time in South Florida from Oct. 15 to Jan. 10 at Joe Picasso's Interactive Studio & Cafe, at 888 E. Las Olas Blvd. in Fort Lauderdale. The cafe hosts revolving exhibits. "We support local artists by giving them a venue," said Steven Way. manager at Joe Picasso's. The display marks the second exhibit of Peterson's work since the. pictures were restored two years ago. The only previous show was in the summer of 2002 at the Reedville Fishermen's Museum in Reedville, Va. The "Skipjack Sunday" show at Joe Picasso's will fea- ture some 23 images of the vessels, which were originally designed for dredging oysters from Chesapeake Bay. Five of the stills are in color with the remainder black and white. Limited edition prints will be for sale. The photos were taken in the late 1960s off Deal Island, Md. "A time I now remember as a Skipjack Sunday," said Peterson, who owns a film production company with Meek. The couple lives aboard a 50-foot catch named Colony II, docked in Fort Lauderdale. The images in the exhibit were taken when Peterson was working at a television news station in Richmond, Va. "I found out there would be a large gathering of skip- jacks for a race on the bay," he said. "I wanted to get some footage because I was afraid they were going to die off." After Meek found old film and still photographs, it took more than 300 hours to restore the negatives. "They're bet- ter than the originals," he said. The pictures give people a joyful glimpse into a fading breed of boats and men. It celebrates America's last fleet of working sailboats, Peterson said. The Chesapeake Bay skipjack fleet is the last commer- cial sailing powered fishing fleet in North America. It is believed the vessel earned the name because its passes over the oyster beds resembling the skipjack mackerel and skip- jack tuna that leapt out of the bay's waters, according to www.baydreaming.com. Peak building years for the skipjacks were from the 1890s through the first decade of the 20th century. The vessels were designed to easily navigate the Chesapeake's shallow waters, according to baydreaming, a website providing information on boating, fishing, trav- el, events and history of the Chesapeake Bay in Maryland and Virginia. It is estimated there were once about 2,000 working skipjacks. But much of the fleet was abandoned after a sig- nificant drop in oyster prices during the early 1900s. Although prices increased after World War II, leading to the construction of some new skipjacks, the number of boats began declining in the 1970s. Pictured Sis Peterson's photo, "Racing" shot off Deal Island, Md. Today, there are about 30 skipjacks. Some have been restored and are in museums. Others are used for tours and educational purposes. A few still dredge for oysters in the bay, the website stated. Peterson's fascination with the vessels dates back to the early 1960s when, at age 20, he and three buddies bought an old skipjack. "We fixed it up," Peterson said. "We thought we were going to go on a great adventure." The friends sailed the boat from Chesapeake Bay to North Carolina, where it was stolen, he said. A few years later, Peterson sailed around on another skipjack that belonged to a former business partner. Peterson said he equates the cotton-canvassed skipjacks gliding into the sunset to the covered wagons that once jour- neyed west. The boats have come to symbolize the American spirit, he said. "Their graceful unvarnished beauty is a living symbol of the character and fiber of the American waterman," Peterson said. What, you didn't know they were banished? Why else do you think it's so nice and peaceful there? The association assured every- one that Jetskis, also called water Arnold Markowitz bikes, or scooters, or personal watercraft (PWC), or the most popular nickname, Blasphemous Obscene Dirty Words (BODWs), are nicer than they used to be that they're quieter, with more effi- cient engines, and are less disturbing to the environment. Even if that's so, fishing-doers will argue that Jetskis appeal mostly to lowlifes whose idea of a good time is spoiling someone else's. It's not a matter of a few rotten apples making a whole barrel smell bad; it's just the opposite. Before getting further into that, let's acknowledge Mister Jetski, Esq. (Big J to his pals). As the K'whatchamacallit Company's attorney, Big J's noble goal is to prevent the brand name from slipping into the common lower-case lexicon, which could put the trademark in jeopardy. Big J wish- es the news media and . the general public would- = n't use the j-word when speak- -o '- ing about, about, um, well, y'know,.' ,r about Jetskis, but darn them, they do it any- way, don't they? A day may come when stewards of our national marine treasures forget the real reasons for giving jetskiers the heaveho from 66 national parks and seashores. Noise? Fumes? Oh, come on. They did it because they saw that Jetskis had some- thing in common with weapons: nothing bad happened until some fool got his hands on one and began playing with it. Maybe it seemed that only fools were involved with Jetskis, but it seemed that way very convincingly. So that's how the Personal Water Euphemism earned its bad reputation. The U.S. Department of the Interior did what it had to do. So did some other governments. The Village of Key Biscayne is just the latest to declare Jetskis and their riders, taken together, non grata. Let's be fair to Jetskis: poor things, they're cursed at only because of the people who ride them. As for the manufacturers, they found that market and embraced it. It's their own. I could wear you out with stories demon- strating that true BODWs, those riders, are reckless, immature and dangerous. You've probably heard and seen worse stories than mine, so I won't repeat them. I do have a personal Jetski experience that I've never printed until now for fear that people would call me a liar or a religious nut. On my honor, I swear: ./ I once saw two guys riding Jetskis ,o responsibly. See? I knew you wouldn't believe It. S<' Really, they were in the Everglades on the L-67 canal, where I was fishing. As the jet- skiers approached me, they moved to the opposite side and slowed down as they passed. I told only a few friends about the strange incident. My first visitor was a bearded gent wearing a black suit and a big black hat, with a little black hat underneath, and a striped silk scarf with tassels even though it was summer- time in Miami. I gave him a glass of tea and we shmoozed a while. "So," he finally said, "I understand you have seen the face of Gee Dash Dash." No, I told him, I saw two guys on Jetskis, being con- siderate of other boaters, slowing down, not buzzing fisher- men or tearing up their lines. "Miraculous!" he agreed, "but for a real miracle you should not have seen two, for as you must know, there is only one Gee Dash Dash. By the way, I notice you are wearing bifocals." Bifocals don't give you dou- ble vision, I explained, insisting there really were two guys on two S Jetskis. The man made a few notes and went away. -'0 Soon I had another visitor dressed in black. This one didn't wear a hat or a silk scarf or a beard. He had an Italian accent. "Are you sure you saw two?" he asked. "As you must know, there are three divine entities four if you include the Holy Mother. Sometimes we get false reports, well- intentioned of course, from people who, it turns out, actu- ally saw the Queen Mary. Ha, ha! Say, aren't those bifo- cals you're wearing?" The latest news on the Personal Watercraft Industry Association's request for reconsideration of The Jetski Question in Biscayne National Park is that the government will think it over. Should fishing-doers worry? In a few other parks, the industry association has been able to demonstrate that environmental excuses for the ban have receded, but those are places without manatees or crocodiles, which we have in Biscayne. We can still contend that Jetskis are dangerous to those creatures, but to be on the safe side, let's also teach the crea- tures to be dangerous to Jetskis and their riders. Once a few of them are devoured, it will be easy to prove they are indi- gestible, undesirable prey. That should make the ban stick. Global warming helps to provide the conditions that spawn hurri- canes, and our emissions of greenhouse gases help to cause global warming. After four years denying that global warming is occurring and that our actions have anything to do with it, the Bush administration has at last acknowledged that global warming is real and is the result of our emissions of C02 and other greenhouse gases. But they assure us that this has no implications for policy. Bush's policy has been to increase domestic oil drilling and coal mining to achieve energy independence. But it is impossible to achieve energy independence by accelerating depletion. We have only 2 percent.of the world's oil reserves and import 60 percent of the oil we use. We will never drill our way to energy independence. L toItheiEitor Instead this policy will drain America first leaving us at OPEC's mercy. And it will result in more global warm- ing, which is not in our best interests. John Kerry supports energy conservation and development of renewable energy. This is the right path for energy independence, climate stability and the environment. The Kerry-Edwards plan will bring a stronger, safer, more secure America. Bush's policy is in the short-term interest of the big energy companies, but is no good for the nation as a whole. Carl Henn, Rockville, Md. Kerry exhibits political opportunism over naval service To the Editor: Besides being personally arrogant and self-absorbed, John Kerry has exhibited the most blatant political oppor- tunism. It is a fact that real war heroes don't beat their chests proclaiming their service and calling themselves heroes. Yet, the most liberal of our 100 senators by voting record, John Kerry does this daily. Did you ever hear Bob Dole, a true hero who went through far more than most, do such a thing when he was running for president? In Vietnam, I served in a recon platoon and three infantry rifle companies during three tours. I neither com- mitted nor observed any of the atrocities that Kerry testi- 'fled under oath were the norm among American troops. The attack against our troops in Iraq is being led by many politicians appearing in the media. These extreme liberals are greatly damaging the war against terrorism. They are also internationalists who would have us get per- mission from a corrupt and predominantly anti-American U.N. before defending our country. A true crisis of choice and direction is facing our great country. Who do you think our enemies want as the next U.S. president? Col. (Ret.) HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer This is one in a series of special features on land- marks along South Florida's waterways. This month's feature explores the City of Dania Beach. Settled as a Danish farming community 100 years ago, Dania Beach continues to branch out from its tomato- growing past. "... Now we need to look at where we are today and our future, which means becoming more identified with the expanding marine industry"' said Annie Beattie, manager of the city's chamber of commerce. The city's challenge as it nears the end of its centennial year: retail and small business growth, Beattie said. As Broward's oldest city settled in 1904 Dania Beach's proximity to the ocean and Intracoastal are among its best features. But the city has never elicited the fanfare of neighbors Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood. "Look at the airport," said Beattie. "It's partially locat- ed inside Dania Beach, but the name is Fort Lauderdale- Hollywood because those names are more recognizable." But in its early years, Dania was bigger than both of them. Danish farmers from Wisconsin traveled down the Florida East Coast Railroad in 1901 and jumped off in a wilderness area known as Modello. They discovered rich soil perfect for farming especially tomatoes. By 1904 the city incorporated, its name honoring its Danish founders. At the time, Dania was actually in Dade County while Broward was just forming. Fort Lauderdale and Hollywood were also in the early stages of development, and Dania even tried to annex the smaller Fort Lauderdale. In 1926, Dania annexed to Hollywood, but a year later voted to withdraw and go it alone. In 1927, the city took on the moniker, "Tomato Capital of the World," when its first Tomato Festival was held. The annual event ended in 1958 but was revived in 1999, with the next taking place in March. The tomato is still featured on many city signs and trash containers. At its peak, 200 farms were shipping out 1,500 railroad cars of tomatoes. But as saltwater began seeping into farm- DOCK & DECK SERVICES "The Piling Restoration .. .. = ._: -- "7' . In 1957, the city saw its last major tomato crop. Today, the city has its own "Tomato Man" in the form of Michael Saunders. For the past 14 years, Saunders has been a familiar face along Dania Beach Boulevard and Sheridan Street where he sets up his cardboard table produce stand. "I know the story about Dania's tomato history," said Saunders. "But what I sell is not grown here, but people from the area have been buying them for a long time and it's keeping the tomato past alive." Five days a week, Saunders drives from his Stuart home to Dania Beach to sell roadside tomatoes that are grown in Orlando. "These are the best tomatoes in the world," said Donna Mentrasti, who's lived in Dania Beach since 1959 FABRICATIONS Aluminum Steel Stainless Steel * STRUT FABRICATION METAL FABRICATION Aluminum Standpipes Aluminum Wet Bars Aluminum Modifications 954-921-8170 Need Dockside Yacht Repairs? In 1945 the city began focusing on a new industry - antiques. The first shop was opened by the Ely family and others followed, drawing eager buyers from around the world. Hotels began to flourish along Dania Beach Boulevard. In 1954, Dania Jai-Alai opened its doors on the thoroughfare. "While we still have a number of antiques shops along Main Street, we have seen many close their doors as a new generation of owners are opting to get out of the business,'- Beattie said. From a high of 70 shops, the current number is now about 60. The city has been looking at ways to redevelop down- town and make Dania Beach Boulevard more pedestrian- friendly to attract more retail and restaurants. Today, Dania Beach is home to: Florida Atlantic University's Sea Tech Center Institute for Ocean Systems Engineering, Nova Southeastern University's Oceanographic Center, Bass Pro Shops' Outdoor World and the International Game Fish Association Fishing Museum and Hall of Fame, the 253-acre John U. Lloyd Beach State Park, the Anne Kolb Nature Center, the RTM Star Center and the Design Center of the America's (DCOTA). In addi- Stion, dozens of small marine businesses and marinas call Dania Beach home. Parts of the 2,100-acre Port Everglades also are in the city. Each April, the Dania Marine Flea Market takes place at Dania Jai-Alai, with more than 900 vendors. "Our strategic location provides an ideal framework for businesses to relocate here," said Dania Beach Mayor Robert Anton. "We continue to grow while still maintaining our small town atmosphere." In celebration of its 100th anniversary, the city has been sponsoring events throughout the year. On Nov.14, the offi- cial Centennial Celebration will be held at Frost Park, 300 NE Second St., Dania Beach. 'BEAVER BRAND" CANVAS, INC. I,. OCTOBER 2004 A*wE R mmN-m EmS r.an. tIi She's really cooking now: boat captain pens 10th book Kids cookbook to debut at Ft. Lauderdale boat show By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer For the past 10 years, Capt. Jan Robinson has been writ- ing about the fun adults can have mixing boating and food. .Now she's decided to involve kids. "I've been collecting recipes for years that would be fun for kids to do and thought it would be nice to give them their own book to help guide them along," said the sailboat captain and cookbook author. Now the "Kids Caribbean Coloring Cookbook" will make its debut at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show, which runs from Oct. 28 to Nov. 1. And next February the book will also appear at the Miami International Boat Show. "I'm really excited about the venture," said Robinson, who visits South Florida often from her home base of Charlotte, N.C. Robinson has sailed since her childhood in New Zealand to her move to the U.S., in 1971. In 1979 she and her husband Sean bought a 60-foot sailboat and began offering weeklong charters out of the Virgin Islands. With four guests per trip, Robinson was able to mix her sailing and cooking skills to create gourmet meals at sea. "Everyone was so pleased about being able to eat so elegantly while out on the water," she said. The success of the meals prompted Robinson to trade recipes with other yacht captains, eventually sparking the idea of writing them all down so they could really share. From there, Robinson began to write seriously. Her first book, "Ship To Shore" came off the press in 1983 and sold 5,000 copies in two months. It included 680 recipes from 65 boat captains. That book is now in its 14th printing. Robinson then penned "Ship To Shore Cocktails," fol- lowed by "Sweets to Shore," which addressed desserts. Next came "Bahama Mama Cooking" and "Virgin Island Cooking." She followed up with a healthy lifestyle book Captain and cookbook author Jan Robinson will debut her 10th book, "Kids Caribbean Coloring Cookbook" at the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show in late October. when she penned "Slim to Shore." It takes the author about two years to work on a book before it is finished. Over the years, she has collected more than 2,500 recipes from 300 yacht captains. The party atmosphere will occur, regardless of whether the regatta is there or not, he said. "One year, we finished the race at the north end of the bay and another year we held the regatta the weekend after Columbus Day." Both times, the park was filled with boats during the holiday weekend, Whipple said. SES.A. Entrants stay in a designated anchorage that is patrolled by law enforcement. Of the entry fee paid by regatta partic- ipants, $30 goes to the park, he said. "The regatta participants are the only ones that pay a permit fee to use the park," Whipple said. The 2,000 or so visitor boats that spend the weekend in the park pay no fee. The only fee they are charged is $15 per night to anchor at the Elliot Key and Boca Chita harbors, where there are boat slips. Regatta entrants will be monitored, but not too closely. "Because of the event's history, we know they provide their own boats to make sure their people are safe," said Holly Rife, chief ranger at Biscayne National Park. Much of the law enforcement will be centered outside the regatta's designated and secured anchorage, aimed at the vacationing boaters not involved with the race, she said. Restrictions will be imposed for the holiday weekend, including a rule allowing no more than five vessels rafting together, Rife said. Park officials are also bringing back a restriction creat- ed last year, which forbids excessive noise from boom NO PROBLEM TOO SMALL OR BIG. Boaters can also again expect a heavy law enforcement presence. Patrols will be conducted by officers from federal, state and local agencies. Volunteers from the U.S. Coast Guard Auxiliary and MADD will assist visitors too. "Last year, we had 120 law enforcement officers and plan to have the same number this year," Rife said. The increase is primarily due to three drinking-related fatalities that occurred two years ago. It led park officials to more than double law enforcement efforts for 2003, she said. Rife credits last year's increased patrols with the park having no fatalities. A woman was revived after she was found floating face down in the water. In addition to law enforcement, park employees will monitor the featherbeds to ensure that vessels will not run aground and damage sensitive seagrass areas. "Our mission is to protect the resources," Rife said. Employees will also distribute brochures with rules and regulations and a map at the park's marinas. The first to protest were the Portuguese, who convinced a new pope (a Medici rather than a Borgia) to move the line for Spanish control further west, later giving Portugal its control over Brazil. In the meantime, other monarchs were busy trying to curry favor with Spain, including England. To this end, the daughter of Ferdinand and Isabella was married to the future King Henry VIII. Within the context of world politics, it has sometimes been conjectured that one of the ancillary advantages for King Henry becoming Protestant relating to his divorce of the Spanish princess, was that it allowed England to ignore any papal edicts about Spain's exclusive right to newly discovered lands.- The Protestant Dutch also took the same position, so the Age of Exploration was on. Columbus planted the seed, creating a resilient interest in long voyages. This brought on a need for better ships, competent and healthy crews, protections for cargo and a need for courts to enforce laws to protect both investors and national economies. Although the English Courts of Admiralty had existed long before Columbus, it was after his death that maritime law truly took on the appearance it does today. So .the Admiral of the Ocean Sea actually invigorated the Courts of Admiralty. It is quite possible that without Columbus we'd be living c' "Copyrighted Material O_ low -M - -v--" Syndicated Content -r- -ois - ' Available from Commercial News Providers".o r I*e -d 0 in a far more landlocked world today. Captains and crew patrolled the shores 24/7 looking for signs of ships in distress. When a troubled vessel was spotted, a seven-man team would row its surf- boat out to rescue the shipwrecked passengers. Those heroes are fondly remembered on Bald Head Island, NC in the naming of the Cape Fear Station one of six carefully planned and distinct villages. A semi-tropical isle on the southernmost tip of North Carolina (100 miles south of the Outer Banks), Bald Head is accessible only by private boat or passenger ferry a 20-minute ride from the charming riverfront community of Southport. Early river pilots named the island. The "Bald" in the island's name refers to the high dune headland on the south- west point that was devoid of vegetation.. Today, visitors dis- cover 14 miles of excellent beach, 200 acres of maritime forest, tidal creeks and a colorful history peppered with ref- erences to pirates, bootleggers and lighthouse keepers. Bald Head's architecture was influenced by the turn-of- the-century frame houses built for Charlie Swain (lighthouse headkeeper for thirty years) and his assistants. Ravaged by time and tide, the houses have been carefully preserved and now surround a common area. Two-story homes with wide porches on both levels, picket fences and cedar-shingled sid- ing recall elements of old fishing towns. Renting one of these vacation houses is the way to go. Wax myrtle, yaupon and beautyberry, along with sabal palms, dogwoods and live oaks are plentiful. At Keeper's Landing, a wooden walkway extends 500 feet over the marsh with an observation deck at the end of the pier. It affords great views of the Atlantic, the ancient forests, salt marshes and even a glimpse of Old Baudy, a lighthouse commissioned by Thomas Jefferson. With its distinctive off- Bald Island, NC: The island's relaxed pace has long lured sailors. People on the island travel via electric carts, bicycles and by foot In the marshes, lanky herons and egrets appear like sculptures in the green grasses, while autumn breezes bring in waves of migrating birds resting and feeding on the island. Popular conservancy programs focus on endangered logger- head turtles. A wealth of salt marshes and creeks allow for canoeing, fishing, clamming, crabbing, and kayaking. The island's relaxed pace has long lured sailors. The creeks and river offer up red drum, speckled trout and floun- der, while surfcasting brings in bluefish. Fishing boats reel in Spanish mackerel, billfish and dorado. Nearby artificial reefs teem with snapper, grouper and king mackerel, while 50 miles off the coast, fishermen hit the Gulf Stream in search of wahoo. The Bald Head Island Fishing Rodeo is a billfish catch- and-release competition held the weekend after Memorial Day, while each September more than 500 boats take part in the U.S. Open King Mackerel Tournament. Winner takes home $25,000 for the largest catch. Bald Head Marina serves as a convenient base for boaters cruising the Intracoastal Waterway and the Atlantic. The 10-acre protected harbor is framed by float- ing docks where transient dockage is available for yachts up to 115 feet. It's surrounded by the Harbour Village neighborhood. Eb & Flo's Steam Bar is a laid-back, open-air pavilion overlooking the marina where people eat steamed and fried seafood, burgers and sandwiches served at picnic tables. Check out the Cape Fear Steamer that includes shrimp, clams, oysters, mussels, Alaskan crab legs, kielbasa sausage, corn and potatoes steamed in beer and Old Bay. Just steps away from the ferry landing, The River Pilot Caf6 is known for shrimp and grits as well as innovative seafood dishes. Over at the Maritime Market you'll find a full-service grocery store offering fresh fruits, vegetables, meats, seafood, fresh baked breads and an extensive wine selection.
