If there's a good side to the calamity, it's that members of the Marine Industries Association of South Florida are ral- lying around the victims, gathering truckloads of relief supplies and hauling them across the state. More than that, the effort includes a call for money and muscle. "We are looking to our association members and mem- bers of the community to help donate the supplies, funds and manpower necessary to help get these companies back on their feet," said Helen Wozunk, membership develop- ment coordinator for the MIASF in Fort Lauderdale. The harm done on the lower Gulf coast was massive, and boaters in South Florida know they were only an atmospheric sidestep away from damage. Dry-stack boat storage racks collapsed, floating vessels swamped, sunk, were impaled on pilings or flung high ashore. A damage list was in the early stages of being compiled as of this writing. No one could predict a bottom line yet. "We know for sure that two dry stack storage facilities were destroyed completely," Wozunk said. "One is on the Peace River and the other on Pine Island." Land 'N' Sea Distributing, a marine products ware- house near Lake Suzy, about seven miles upland from Port Charlotte, was torn to pieces. The company, with locations from Ontario, Michigan and Texas to the east coast, has headquarters in Pompano Beach. Requested supplies are now being collected at Billfish Marina, 2955 State Road 84 in Fort Lauderdale. Rebuilding entails a massive cleanup effort before busi- nesses can attempt a comeback. "They need gloves, jack stands to put boats up on, Photo/JOHN ZIEGLER Helen Wozunk, membership development coordinator for the South Florida Marine Industries Association in Fort Lauderdale, and Ed Anderson of Jackson Marine in Fort Lauderdale, stack boxes of marine supplies donated to help marinas destroyed by Hurricane Charley rebuild. Goods will be accepted through September at Billfish Marina, located at 2955 State Road 84, Fort Lauderdale. all kinds of pumps to pump out fuel and water from sunken boats, industrial batteries," Wozunk said. Collections began Aug. 20 and will continue well into September, she said. &11:14l414ANI Fashion to be addressed in Miami marine design conference By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL Waterfront News Writer Some of the biggest influences in boating design could come from what we wear and what we drive when representatives from the fashion and automotive indus- tries meet with leading boat manufacturers at a confer- ence this fall in Miami Beach. The invitation-only session on Oct. 26 is being spon- sored by Marine Design Resource Alliance, a group of industry suppliers founded eight years ago. One of the alliance's divisions is the Color Waves program, which brings its members together annually to discuss trends and research for color, styling and design that relates to the marine industry. The upcoming conference, called "The Business of Color," will mark the first time the group is opening its yearly gathering to nonmembers, said Paige Mullis, Color Waves program director and product manager for Sunbrella Marine Interior Fabrics in Glen Raven, NC. The alliance meeting will be presented during the International BoatBuilders' Exhibition & Conference, also known as IBEX 2004, being held Oct. 25 to 27 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. Guest speakers at the Marine Design Resource Alliance event will be Roxi Suger, president of Angelrox, a fashion house in New York, and Christine Dickey, color and trim manager for Toyota USA. Suger and Dickey will speak before design teams from leading boat manufacturers. "The discus- sions will lead to talks that will inspire future design at each of these companies," Mullis said. Talk at the conference will revolve around everything from cushion fabrics, to the coloring and shapes of hulls, Mullis said. Roxi Suger ofAngelrox "It will affect the options available to the public and the way they can express their personalities through their boats, just as they would in their homes," she said. Inviting Suger and Dickey will hopefully motivate boat manufacturers to be more trend setting and cutting edge, Mullis said. "There's a high level of glamour associated with the boating lifestyle," Mullis said. "We need to think more about that when putting boats together as a selling tool." Because fashion pervades all industries these days, it should come as no surprise that its influence should extend to boating, Suger said. "I was very excited by the invitation to the confer- ence, Suger said. "I know the yachting and boating industry has traditionally been more conservative. But when I get on a boat, I feel exotic and sensual. It makes you feel sexy and alive. Everything on the boat should reinforce the feelings of escape and luxury." "I know the yachting and boating industry has traditionally been more conservative. But when I get on a boat, I feel exotic and sensual. Roxi Suger, president of fashion house Angelrox Suger said she will try to impress upon the alliance's members that they should try to incorporate a fusion of functionality, sensuality and elegance. Boating can be influenced by a sense of fashion, from more sensuous, aerodynamic curves to sophisticated blends of colors. But the marine industry does not want to be trendy, she said. Instead, they should evoke a sense of timeless style. "People want to be very stimulated by their environment and they also want practicality," she said. Fans of John D. MacDonald's mystery novels will no longer have to wonder about the marker honoring one of the author's most famous characters at the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort in Fort Lauderdale that had been removed two years ago. The plaque signifying where the fictional Travis McGee docked his houseboat at the resort's marina will be re-dedi- cated during a ceremony on Saturday Oct. 2. The free program, at 10:30 a.m., is co-sponsored by the Radisson Bahia Mar and the Florida Center for the Book. Several Florida-based authors will speak and Fort Lauderdale Mayor Jim Naugle will proclaim Oct. 2 as Travis McGee Day. Authors scheduled to appear include James W. Hall, Randy Wayne White, Les Standiford, James Grippando, Jonathon King, and PJ Parrish. A slip at the marina was originally dedicated in 1987, one year after MacDonald's death. The plaque was removed in 2002 while the 250-slip mega yacht facility underwent extensive renovations, said Francis Purvey, director of sales and marketing at the Radisson Bahia Mar Beach Resort. Lauderdale, FL 33312 954-321-6174 The $17 million project was completed last year. It included the installation of wider and uncluttered piers, deeper channels, the capacity to pump up to 150 gallons of fuel per minute and state-of-art amenities such as wireless high speed Internet, cable television and direct dial phone lines, Purvey said. The rededication will hopefully generate new interest in the author and Fort Lauderdale, he said. The ceremony falls on the 40th anniversary of the pub- lication of "The Deep Blue Good-By," the first book in the Travis McGee series, said Tara Zimmermann, literary events coordinator at the Florida Center for the Book The center, housed at the Broward County Main Library in downtown Fort Lauderdale, sponsors literary events and seminars. "Our main purpose is to bring readers and writers together," Zimmermann said. In MacDonald's books, the fictional Slip F-18 at Bahia Mar was where McGee's houseboat, the Busted Flush, was berthed. The spot was named a Florida literary landmark by Friends of Libraries USA, she said. The reinstalled plaque will state: "Dedicated to the Busted Flush Home of Travis McGee Fictional Hero and Salvage Consultant Created by John D. MacDonald, Author 1916-1986 Designated a Literary Landmark February 21, 1987." Boat Repairing & Painting Writer John D MacDonald, author of "The Deep Blue Good-By," the first book in the Travis McGee series. The Florida Center for the Book and Bahia Mar were original sponsors of the plaque. "We wanted to put it back in its place of honor," Zimmermann said. I don't remember why I was at sea in such weather. I do remember what a clever way that was to solve one problem and create another. Beaching was a good idea, I thought, because I read it some- where. Arnold Markowitz Now that the 2004 hurricane season has gotten serious, it's a good time to give trailer boat owners some better boat protection tips, not too obvious, hopefully practical, to read so that after it's too late they'll know what they should have done instead of what they did. First, if you're out on the water, do not ground your boat on a beach unless there's absolutely no other choice. My excuse was that waves and wind were building fast, and I was far from the marina where my car and trailer were parked. Rather prudently for one so youthful and bold, I decided not to risk a run for it against head seas. That boat was a 15-foot Woodson cathedral hull with a 25 hp outboard a shallow draft hull, light enough to drag well above the high-water line, close to a motel but not close enough to solve the problem of driving across soft sand to get the boat back on the trailer. "Worry about that later," I told myself. The motel owner helped me drag the boat upland and bury two anchors, just in case of a surge at high tide. That couldn't happen again. Nowadays the joint would be a high- hat resort and a security guard would run at me screaming,. "Private property! Go away!" If you're smart enough to have your trailer boat at home next time there's a bad storm, deadmen can protect it as the bones and ghosts of deadmen guarded buried treasure in a quaint, charming ritual of pirate days. 23 Years of Quality Equipment & Service TECHNICOLD SRefrigeration Systems Air Conditioning Systems Service Center & Showroom 230 SW 27th St. Ft. Once the hole was dug the captain murdered the crewman, buried him with the chest and rowed back to the ship. "Where is Snake-eye?" the other pirates asked. "He bugged out," came the answer. "I was busy shoveling and when I looked up, poof, he was gone." "That stinker owed us money!" the others hollered. "Serves you right," the captain said. "Never trust a pirate." We're not good at killing guys, so instead of true-to-life deadmen, let's buy four large cement blocks. For each block we need a length of extra-heavy-duty chain four or five feet long, plus a repair link. We also want two hook-ended high- strength truck towing straps, about five or six feet longer than our trailers are wide. Next time a big-time wind blows, search frantically for the chain ends and the straps. Hook the straps to the chains crosswise over the trailer, under the hull, with as little slack as possible Add a big squirt can of marine rust inhibitor. Overdose the chains with that stuff, loop each chain through the mid- dle of a cement block and fasten one end of the chain to itself with a repair link. Now let's bury the blocks about a foot underground, alongside the spots where we park our trailers, with the chain ends protruding. Those will be our deadmen one on each side near the bow, the same next to the stem. Next time a big-time wind blows, search frantically for the chain ends and the straps. Hook the straps to the chains crosswise over the trailer, under the hull, with as little slack as possible. ~ ':I ii I; : I Ir L. That will hold a hefty boat firmly to the trailer. Our deadman project is to hold the trailer firmly to the ground. My rig's pretty stout, but if I switch to a lower, lighter vessel I'll stretch those straps over the boat, not under it, to better secure the whole package. I may let half the air out of the trailer tires to lower the center of gravity and reduce side- ways wobbling. If I do that, I'll get an electric inflator. If you cover your boat, it's good to own a few ratchet- ing tie-down straps to prevent the tarpaulin from billowing or sailing. If you don't cover, make sure the scuppers are open and clear of debris. A trailer boat parked near trees col- lects seeds, leaves, acors, twigs, fronds and stuff, which plug the drains. If your boat is parked in a banyan"s copious shade, move the boat or get rid of that tree. For all their majestic beauty, banyans are trouble. Their root systems are so shal- low that they're easily blown over. Other than that, the con- sequences of those roots squirming under your slab-founda- tion house are too awful to contemplate. Casuarina trees, better known as Australian pines, are easily blown down too. Avoid them too. Here are a few other hurricane preparations that may seem obvious but are often overlooked: Remove all remov- able cushions. Look under the gunwales, where you may have left a fishing rod in the rack. Be sure all hatch-cover fasteners are closed, or strong wind may tear the lids off. Stow the docklines, except the one used to bind the Bimini top tightly to the hull. Are your antennae secure in their hold-down clips? Take care of your boat before the hurricane hits and it will take care of you afterward: The insulated fish boxes are good places to store extra blocks of ice and per- ishable foods. No firm pre- dictions yet, but it's on the serious list as a fishery manage- ment plan for the park takes shape. And would you support new restrictions on catching cer- tain fish if it would prove to reverse a decades-long decline, eventually transforming your catch from fewer fish.to more, from smaller fish to bigger? You might hope to banish commercial fishing in the park but you can't, so how about a plan to monitor and control the catch, to outlaw tackle that gouges bay bottoms where marine life is nurtured and to restrict commercial per- mit renewals? A working group of private citizens, preparing the fish- ery plan, believes you should and will go for all those and other ideas now being prepared for public presentation. Some of the ideas might even be yours, suggested at public hearings in 2002 and '03 or in opinions you wrote to the National Park Service. Sometime in December or early next year, a round of public hearings will give everyone another chance to turn thumbs up or down for a variety of fishery propositions. Some if not all will be included in a final management plan, loosely scheduled for introduction next spring or early sum- mer. That plan will govern fishing in Biscayne for the next 10 to 15 years. The fishing permit is in the water now, like a baited hook, because the park has to.catch some money to pay for fishing improvements. The biggest one? Law enforcement. About a jillion times, fishermen have told the park and its partner, the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission, not to impose new regulations unless they put enough rangers and marine police on the water to enforce the new ones and the under-enforced old ones. A park fishing permit would raise the money to hire and equip those people, and the Working Group (its formal title) insists on dedicating that money entirely to enforcement. "It would be a stamp on your state fishing license. It would only cost a couple of dollars," said the chairman, Ocean Reef boat dealer Jack Curlett. Curlett said the plans drafted so far have been accepted by the Florida Keys National Marine Sanctuary's advisory council, which created the Working Group for the park and the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. Once the last recommendations are written, the park staff will use them to make several detailed alternative plans, including one preferred alternative. They will be presented at a series of public comment sessions like those held last year. Todd Kellison, the park's fishery chief, said revisions will be made after the public comment deadline and a final version of the management plan should be finished by next spring or early summer. How much money a park fishing stamp can raise isn't clear, because it isn't clear how many people fish in the park. How much money a park fishing stamp can raise isn't clear, because it isn't clear how many people fish inthe park. The best information the park staff has is from a mid-1990s survey that Kellison said was extensive, and showed that one- third of park visitors did some recreational fishing. One-third of how many visitors? Not so easy. "Recent annual estimates for total visitation have been 500,000, which would put estimates of numbers of recre- ational fishers at 165,000. This would be an obvious under- estimate, since many people certainly enter the park from marinas north of Matheson Hammock and south of Homestead Bayfront', Kellison said. Matheson, Homestead and Black Point are public mari- nas whose channels go directly into the park. Other large marinas at Crandon Park and Dinner Key are at the park's doorstep, as are several private docking and boat storage facilities, yacht clubs and the Coral Gables Waterway where virtually every house on either side has a dock and at least one boat. Possibly the hardest Working Group proposition to put into effect is one that recommends monitoring 13 game and food fish species by biological sampling and dockside sur- veys, and using the information to devise new catch restric- tions and management regulations. It may be possible to do a better job of monitoring the commercial catch the state's unreliable reporting system has been improved by the inclusion of specific zones in the park, for example. and there are only a couple of dozen or so commercial fishers operating there. If there's a surprise in the works, it's that the six com- mercial fishers in the 26-member Working Group support the proposed regulations. With or without the support of sport fishers, tracking the recreational catch would be much harder. "Perhaps not pos- sible," said Kellison. Even though scientists go in the water to count fish in person, they can only over so much territory and the data they gather are unsatisfyingly imprecise as foundations for fishing regulations. Fish, after all, are hard to follow. They move around at will, migrate long distances and devour each other. Humans do too, but at least we are documented by fin- gerprints, driver licenses and Social Security numbers and 'yet the U.S. Census miscounts and omits many thousands of us every 10 years. Despite the lack of precise data, it is well documented that over time there's been.a decline in Biscayne National Park's fishing. When it was begun as a national monument in 1968, fishermen had hardly any size or catch limits to worry about. In the 36 years since then, Florida has imposed limits for virtually every species, with closed seasons for snook, and yet most analysts are convinced that fish num- bers and sizes whatever the numbers really are have declined consistently. The Working, Group raised the point that uncertain information makes it extra hard to set firm goals for recov- ery of species that can't realistically be lumped together. If it isn't known how much populations and sizes are dimin- ishing, how can you say what the catch limits should be for any species to recover to a desirable level? "We want to do our own studies, establish a base line and work from there," chairman Curlett said. However desir- able that is, it might require a lot bigger share of the National Park Service budget than anyone now has in mind for Biscayne. "Funding could certainly be an issue here," Todd Kellison agreed. "Yes, a very probable funding problem." Now, if that really is true, I hope I'm not being too controversial by letting the world know that I could care less if Paris Hiltorf ever milks a cow or, for that mat- ter, whether young Amish adults ever drive a Porsche. However, over the past few years that group of shows popularly listed under the heading CSI have caught my interest. Though the term refers to Crime Scene Investigations, much of the subject matter of these shows deal with general forensic studies (i.e. investigations of a legal nature, whether it is criminal or civil). Admittedly, these shows contain some blatant exaggerations. Everyone has access to the latest scientific equipment along with unlimited funds to utilize and main- tain them. Every department has the inex- haustible highly skilled manpower neces- sary to review evidence and reach closure in days rather than in months or years. In spite of this, these programs can prove rather informative. Not so much because of the "gee whiz" science, but because they help one review the impor- tant elements of the scientific method which should be used in legal (or legal- style) inquiries. The public that watches these shows should be better prepared to enter into a forensic mindset if a litiga- tion-causing incident suddenly comes into their lives; In fact, for incidents of a maritime nature, getting into the forensic mindset is probably more important than most people think. After all, whether you are a passen- ger, crewman, master, or owner, the water remains an intrinsically dangerous- envi- ronment, prone to situations that can lead to legal inquiry and litigation. It is advisable that anyone going to sea should prepare to become an amateur forensic researcher.just in case you ever wind up in a legal situation. How to prepare? Well, it begins with keeping in mind that if an incident happens while on board a vessel (whether a colli- sion, a personal injury, or even a ground- ing) you should within reason take on the demeanor of a researcher, just like one of the scholarly types on a CSI show. This means that along with contacting the proper authorities if required, you should keep a cool head and begin to observe your surroundings. Among your observations should be the following: *Time, date and place of the incident. *Where you are, where you have been, what you were doing, what you heard, and the clothes and shoes you are wearing. Also, take notice of these things on those around you as well. *The vessel: its name, official num- bers, the layout and design of the decks, type of engine or power, and the loca- tion of any crew or passengers at the time of the incident. Also, be aware if any possible problems with the vessel were mentioned or noticeable preceding any incident. *If there is a crew, get their names and available information. Take note of their actions just before, during, and after any incident. *If another vessel is part of the inci- dent, notice the things mentioned above: Taking notes can also be helpful. But be aware that contemporaneous notes can - --~'iM; "Copyrighted Material Syndicated Content Available from Commercial News Providers" - - - - - S - _- * .- o - a - a- -. a ~ - a- *- a Boater serving sentence for To the Editor: I'm currently serving a lengthy sen- tence for B.U.I. People know enough not to drink and drive a car, but a boat! Come on, what can it hurt? We think, "I'm out in my boat to have fun." These people are just asking for something bad to happen. Reaching conclusions is what litigation is for. Hopefully, if an incident ever occurs while you're on a vessel, this list of observations might prove useful. Some may seem clear-cut, but many people forget the obvious dur- ing times of adversity. That's what makes the difference between us common folk and TV characters they never forget that small stuff. HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer Capt. Michael Waserberg realizes that time may be running out to restore his beloved classic boat. He's already invested thousands of dollars and more than 23 years on the project. He's put in countless hours of labor and solicited the salvage skills of dozens of his buddies, keeping to his commitment even while spending the last five years battling cancer. "I'm doing it because somebody has to save boats like this one," he said of the slow-moving restoration that is not yet half finished and has no timetable. Waserberg, 61, is hoping to give neW life to a 65-foot, 1960-built Burger 87-B yacht, one of only four built in its class 44 years ago. The other three were restored private- ly years ago and are now valued at over $3.5 million each, he said. "Most boats this old never get saved. They are used for salvage or sunk somewhere." But he believes that the high quality boat-building reputation of the Burger Yacht Corp. makes his 'craft worth saving. Not to mention the history linked to the yacht, which has traveled to ports of call all around the world. Waserberg first found his boat in 1981. "It was sinking off the coast of Turnbery Isle near Aventura," he said, explaining that the boat had been abandoned in the ocean after being used for drug smug- gling between the U.S. and South America. Since U.S. governmental officials had given up trying to save it at sea, Waserberg a licensed salvage operator took on the task and, in doing so, laid claim to the boat. "This was the first time that I know of that a boat used in international drug smuggling was privately captured rather than being first taken over by the government, which usually then auctions off such vessels to private owners," said Waserberg who turned over drugs found on the salvaged boat to U.S. officials. To dig into the boat's history, the captain spent over 10,000 hours chasing down its title background. It was built in 1960 in Wisconsin by the Burger Yacht Corp., which was founded in 1860 and is still one of the oldest AIR COMPRESSOR E SYSTEMS for DIVERS Supplies Bauer Sales New Service Used Fill Whips & Panels/Manifolds Yokes Gauges Filters Hoses Oils Air Storage Tanks & Fittings Our Clients include: Dive Resorts & Scuba Shops Yacht Owners & Captains, Divers, Fire Dept. 800 Old Griffin Rd., #3 MM Phone: (954) 929-4462 Dania, FL 33004 is Fax: (954) 929-4463 E-Mail: CompAirSupply@att.net DOCK & DECK SERVICES -- -- the life of your pilings 10-20 years. "This is an all-metal boat except for the mahogany wood used in the cabin area," he said. The boat was originally built for a Chicago business- man but was sold in the 1970s to two brothers in Venezuela. It was then passed along to a man in Connecticut, who allegedly used it for drug smuggling. The boat visited ports of call in South and Central America, Mexico, the Caribbean islands and U.S. ports north to New York. 'Most boats this old never get saved. They are used for salvage or sunk somewhere.' Capt. Michael Waserberg Waserberg, who is an ex-U.S. Marine, has enlisted the aid of about 50 fellow veterans in his restoration effort. Large sections of the metal hull must be replaced along with rebuilding the housing area. The boat has been dry docked at. three different marinas. It is cur- rently at the New River Marina off State Route 84 in Fort Lauderdale. For five years, while Waserberg was being treated for cancer, the restoration was on hold. However, work resumed in the last year and the captain continues to secure donated supplies, labor and other resources in his quest to move the project forward. Waserberg, who describes himself as a risk taker and free-spirited hippie left over from the 1960s, said he might never be around to see his project finished. "It may not be done until 2096," he joked. "But the boat is a classic and a noble antique worth saving." Tita Calzada walks outside her Victoria Park church into the Meditation and Memorial Garden along the Middle River to enrich her own spirituality. "Water has a very calming affect on people," said Rev. Calzada of Unity Church of Fort Lauderdale, 1800 NE Sixth Court, which created its waterfront meditation spot to give church members and neighborhood residents a special place to reflect on their lives. The garden is located adjacent to the church, which has a prime waterfront spot along the Middle River and is one of a dozen religious establishments located on or near Broward County's oceanfront. Among them: the non-denominational Church by the Sea near Port Everglades in Harbor Beach, the Jewish Chabad Lubavitch along Galt Ocean Mile, St. Gabriel Catholic Church in Pompano Beach, Second Presbyterian Church in Fort Lauderdale, which has the Middle River in its backyard, and the Community Presbyterian Church in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea. All have found positive aspects to being near the ocean. "It can renew the spirit." Calzada said. Unity, established in 1951 and located on its riverfront spot since 1964, created the Meditation Garden 12 years ago to create a quiet and natural setting. If people "are seeking wisdom or imagination or love or understanding, there is a place for them," Calzada said. The garden wasdedicated several years ago to the late Lucy Hartman, who played piano at Unity services for many years and also enjoyed the garden setting. The area is popular for weddings, with some brides even arriving by boat for the service. "I keep thinking we should build a dock so people who want to come to church by boat could do so," she said. Lauderdale's Church By The Sea, according to the Rev. Liden DeBrie, its pastor. "The church at 2700 Mayan Drive, was founded on the water when its early members began holding Sunday meet- ings on the Jungle Queen 52 years ago," he said. In 1956, the group obtained land on Myan Drive along an inlet off the Intracoastal. This year the church is celebrating its 50th anniversary and takes pride in its link to water. "If you look up at the ceiling of our sanctuary, you'll see the wood and craftsmanship reflects the inside of a boat," DeBrie said. He also pointed out that the logo of the church shows Jesus walking on water. The first offerings were collected using old fishing nets, which are still used at times today. The church has 350 members, many with boats who live on the water. Many of them gather each Easter when the We are iCe #1 Dealer and Installer of $IDEPOMVE Bow Thrusters in South Florida * SIDEMOWE BOW& STERN THRUSTERS available for 100' boats or less. * 3 MINUTE RUNNING TIME (the longest in the industry for DC Thusters). * REMOTE CONTROLS available (the 1st in the US) * The retro fit that looks like it was from the manufacturer * The QUICKEST TURNAROUND TIME for installation. * The LOWEST PRICES in South Florida. * SEEING IS BELIEVING. Easter service at Community Presbyterian Church, 4433 Bougainvilla Drive in Lauderdale-by-the-Sea, is held only a block away on the sands of the Atlantic Ocean. "Fifty-two years ago we helped establish a community wide sunrise service because we were the closest to the water," said the Rev. Norman Dalton, pastor of the church. He said more than 3,000 people now attend that service annually, making it the largest event in the community. Dalton said many of his church's 200 members are boaters and leaders in the local Coast Guard Auxiliary. "I live on the water myself and I know how much a part of our lives it plays," he said. Water plays a vital part of spirituality at Chabad Lubavitch, 3500 N. Ocean Drive on Fort Lauderdale's Gait Ocean Mile, said Rabbi Moshe Lipszyc, who founded the temple 14 years ago. "We can't live without water in our spiritual lives." When a temple member opens a new restaurant or food- related business, its utensils are all taken to the ocean and submerged. "We just walk across the street and do it," he said, explaining how Jewish tradition calls for the blessing of the utensils to purify them. During Rosh Hashanah, the Jewish New Year in mid- September, the tradition of "Tashlich" is observed. This is when temple members walk to the ocean for a special prayer service to wash away sins. "We can walk across the street and hold the service," he said. The back door of the Second Presbyterian Church, 1400 N. Federal Highway in Fort Lauderdale overlooks the Middle River. Rev. Roger Veise says the riverfront is used for special services, like sunrise on Easter Sunday, several times a year. In Pompano Beach, St. Gabriel Catholic Church, 731- N. Ocean Blvd., faces the Atlantic Ocean. In season, parish- ioners who live on the water fill the church. I I W A T E R F R 0 N T N E W S ( 0 M Jo"-'" SEPTEMBER 2004 Aft Remote Tangier Island dubbed 'Soft Shell Crab Capital' By TERRY CONWAY Waterfront News Writer The name Tangier Island might conjure up images of an exotic destination. In realty, it's located just south of the Virginia/Maryland border, an unspoiled fishing vil- lage with quaint narrow streets, long-legged heron and stilted crab shanties. Irrevocably linked to the Chesapeake Bay, the tiny island is called the "Soft Shell Crab Capital of the World." Many of the 650 residents on Tangier are related, a sit- uation probably due to being isolated over the centuries from the mainland. Nearly a third share the surname Crockett descendants of fisherman John Crockett from Cornwall, England, who settled the island with his eight sons in 1686. Tangier is one of the Chesapeake's two true islands (not a peninsula and not connected to the mainland by a cause- way.) There's a significant permanent population. Natives speak with a lingering trace of an Elizabethan accent. Their voices have a pleasant lilt, a singsong fluidity akin to the waves that lap the island's shores. Tour boats transport visitors from Reedville and Onancock, Va., as well as Crisfield, Md., the closest mainland town with a 45-minute ride. Moderate draft vessels (six feet or less) should have no trouble visiting Tangier from either the Tangier Sound or bayside entrances. Vessels drawing more than six feet should probably use the bayside entrance. The boating life As your boat draws closer, the island takes shape: a jagged outline of trees emerges, a water tower and the white steeple of the Swain Methodist Church built in 1899. A tight-knit community, Tangier residents' faith has been tested in countless storms and the trials of isolation. Many of the watermen are lay preachers and Sunday- school teachers. There are few cars and trucks on the three-mile-long island. The terrain is flat, with 80 percent of it covered with marsh, wetlands and water. U .in Residents are clustered in three communities called "ridges:' linked by roads that are little more than paths. Small footbridges let folks transverse the marshy land and provide a chance for children to net the elusive blue crab. Residents and tourists pilot golf carts on narrow lanes lined with simple clapboard homes. Tangier is a culture built on the water with just about everyone owning a boat. An estimated 90 percent of the male population is employed directly or indirectly by the crabbing business. On countless piers, crab traps are rigged for setting in the bay. Offshore waters team with sea trout, drum, bluefish, croaker, flounder and striped bass. -" F a There's few cars and Struck but many soft shell crabs available on the three-mile long at Tangier Island. Most of the 650 residents own a boat. -. Dining spots At Fisherman's Comer Restaurant, visitors savor the hot crab dip or feast on a medley of bay seafood from seafood bisque to scrumptious Chesapeake Bay crab cakes. Tangier watermen make a beeline to Waterfront Restaurant's for tasty soft shell crabs, assorted sandwiches and quick fare. The Waterfront is the only eatery on the water. Dinner is served family style at Hilda Crockett's Chesapeake House where selections include crab cakes, clam fritters, potato salad, coleslaw, corn pudding, fresh rolls, iced-tea and pound cake. If you leave hungry, that's on you. Their B&B is two clapboard cottages that sit adjacent to each other, offering guests a reflection on the past, yet has The possibilities are endless.
