-ATERFRONT J U N E 2 0 0 4 Y e a r .2 1 I s s u e 3 Marine-themed summer By BETH FEINSTEIN BARTL Waterfront News Writer From snorkeling to sailing, kids can spend their summer on or in the water at aquatic camps throughout South Florida. Diverse programs are taking place in Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties that give youngsters the opportunity to explore, learn and have fun in a safe, super- vised setting. The Gulfstream Sailing Club, for example, is holding its second year of sailing camp on North Lake in Hollywood. Last year, 55 youngsters from across Broward County participated in the sessions, said Stewart Barcalow of Dania Beach, who heads up the Gulfstream's Hollywood Sailor's Point Sailing Summer Camp. "They're generally on the boat in the first or second class:' said Barcalow, one of three U.S. Sailing certified instructors conducting the classes. "Most of the campers have never sailed before and it's thrilling to see how enthusi- astic they get when they are in the boat. It really builds up their self confidence." Other local camps featuring sailing include Shake-A- Leg and the Coconut Grove Sailing Club in Miami, and the Palm Beach Sailing Club in West Palm Beach. There's also camps with aquatic activities such as fish- ing at the International Game Fish Hall of Fame & Museum in Dania Beach, snorkeling at the South Florida Science Museum in West Palm Beach and marine science at the Gumbo Limbo Nature Center in Boca Raton. A brief summary of each program and a sampling of others follows: Camp Live Oak offers a one-week Ocean Quest mini session camp, August 9 to 13, at its two locations at Hugh Taylor Birch State Park at State Road A1A and Sunrise Ashley Sullivan, direct Summer Camp, and a Biscayne Bay aboard accommodate kids wii Boulevard in Fort Lauc 163rd Street between A1A in North Miami Blue Seas of Change eighth grade. Lauderdale, FL 33312 954-321-6174 Y I C JUNE 2004 How to get to the bottom of your boat's nagging problem By ARNOLD MARKOWITZ Waterfront News Writer If your bottom goes in and out of the water on a trailer, it almost certainly isn't cute. That's because those universal nui- sances, Nick and Chip, dwell down there, picking at your gel- coat like compulsive nail-biters. Remember the time you were looking for an oyster bar where redfish lurk, and the oyster bar found you first? How about that jetty your bow bumped when you took your eye off the channel and your hand off the helm? Add years of inten- tional beachings, unintentional groundings, barnacles on dock pilings and an occasional what-was-that? underwater thump that you forgot about by the end of the day. Because these little injuries don't noticeably affect the operation of your boat, you don't think about them. But what if your under-inspected bottom's petty booboos are joined by a real wound a hole through the hull, for example? Bad luck, especially if you don't know it's there. Such was the experience of 'Witz End 3, a 20-foot center console outboarder with an important role in bringing you news about fishing, boating and the marine environment. The vessel's bilge pump had been suspiciously busy the last few months, but the reason eluded the owner me. Frequent squirming under the boat and trailer resulted in head bumps, backaches and scraped knees and elbows. In an abundance of caution, the boat a classic SeaCraft built for offshore fishing was restricted to inland lakes and canals. If the unthinkable should happen, safety would be a few strokes and kicks away. Bill Potter, an expert mechanic and marine surveyor, rec- ommended places to seek leaks, but none of those leaked. Ultimately, other projects led to the hole in the hull. I decided to patch the bottom nicks, chips and gouges and to replace the worn old keel pads on the trailer. For that, the boat had to be jacked up about eight inches above the trailer. When it was, the hidden leak was exposed. It had been concealed by the starboard trailer bunk, upon which the boat rested, and by a hydraulic trim tab. It gaped hideously, a dark hole an inch wide and three inches long at the stem end of the boat bottom. A screwdriver, poked upward, hit something about two inches inside. Sideways there was emptiness, the space between the outer and inner hulls. RNOL D NLL RKOVIl TZ Jacking up the boat above the trailer made a mysterious, serious leak visible and accessible. Up to then the patching project had been simple, though rather tedious: 3M premium marine filler (about $23 a pint) plastic putty knives and several sheets of wet-or-dry sandpa- per did a good job. Step-by-step instructions First, you should have a floor jack, but you'll have to boost its vertical lift capability to work on the boat bottom - which is likely to be six or seven inches above where you would place the jack to change a tire. Mine has a liftingrange of 5-1/8 to 14-5/8 inches. Normally, I set the jack upon a base built of two layers of 3/4 inch plywood with quarter-round moldings at the edges to prevent rolling. To raise your boat off the trailer, stack 2x4 lumber as nearly level as possible under whatever you use for a jack base. Mine needed three layers of 2x4. Slip a steel pipe (mine is overlong at seven feet) over the jack handle for extra lever- age. That also lets you keep your body at a distance in case the boat slips off the jack despite all the precautions. Center the jack under the flattest part of the hull, just forward of the transom, with a foot-long piece of 2x4 over the jack's steel lifting cup so the hull won't be gouged. The cup will bite into the wood. That's good. Next, place two longer 2x4s on each trailer fender, to stack on the bunks and hold the boat level as it rises up. "That's only for little stuff," Potter the mechanic said. "You need epoxy for this job. Get some and read the book. It'll be a good leading experience for you." After e-mailing him a photo of the damage, Potter's confidence in my skills sank. "That looks like something that should be repaired from both sides," he replied. 'This is a serious repair." Potter sent us to his longtime friend and colleague Idilio Gonzalez, who owns a fiberglass repair shop in Miami. To get to the inside of the hull hole, Gonzalez had to cut open the bottom of a stem hatch that houses the engine oil tank and a fuel-water separator. Next he had to cut through a stringer, one of the fiberglass beams that give a hull its strength and rigidity. After repairing the original hole, he had to fix the two holes he had made. No big deal; surgeons do that all the time. Gonzalez did a fine job; his bill was $500. four jack stands ready to support the hull, each with a wooden cushion between steel and fiberglass. You might not need all four stands, but use them if the angles of your bottom are horizontal enough to allow it. Before jacking, undo the boat's hold-down straps and put a few inches of slack in the winch strap or cable and lock the ratchet. Now you're ready to jack. As the stem rises up, place short pieces of 2x4 on each of the trailer's cross girders another safety trick in case the jack slips. Place your jack stands, padded with short wood strips, symmetrically along the hull bottom to further stabilize it. You don't want it tipping side to side. This system works nicely with bunk trailers. For an all- rollers system, you'll have to figure out modifications. If you find bottom damage too serious or just too wide- spread to patch it yourself, the lumber on the trailer bunks and cross girders will support the boat when you tow it to a repair shop. Just be sure to take up the winch slack, tight- en your stem tie-down and add another one forward before hitching up. --Arnold Markowitz SZIMAR- GALVANIC ANODES MADE FROM PURE ZINC GOOD PRICE *LAST LONGER l SHAFT ZINCS FROM 3/4" TO 6" METRICC SHAFT ZINCS FROM 25 T0160 m/m ZINCS FOR EUROPEAN YACHTS ZINCS FOR:TAIWAN BOATS 2090 S.W. 71 TRR. Indirectly, some of us pay for that kind of advice. No, not you, but the guy beside you at the tackle store where we're listening to cable television fisherman Rick Murphy, is hookable. He'll bite on a Maverick skiff, Yamaha outboard, Minn Kota trolling motor and a pile of Rapala lures, just because Murphy is a walking billboard for those products. His clothes, festooned with ads, weigh more than yours. His shirt alone might outweigh you, but he and most other fishing masters and gurus do know their stuff, so we attend their appearances and report what they say as true. It has to be, or we couldn't print it in the paper. Here comes some of it now. Murphy: "Whoa the fish," meaning make it stop swimming away. "Get as close to the fish as you can. Run your motor to get your line back on the reel if it's a long way out. Once you get close enough, you can use the rod to fight. Hold the rod handle about waist high or a bit lower. Use your thumb to add a little drag, without tight- ening the drag wheel. It's much faster that way." Murphy is against high-sticking with graphite rods. That's how most of us learned to fight a fish, but we used fiberglass then. With a weighty fish on it, your graphite rod is liable to break doing that. Instead, hold the rod side- ways, putting the strain on the butt end where the power is. Hold the butt low and the shaft almost level: "If the fish is going to your left, pull to the right." Capt. Bouncer Smith, with more trustworthy infor- mants under water than the government has on land and in the sky, predicts that tarpon will be active in June on the south side of Government Cut, the inlet for Miami Harbor: "Be there early. It's over by 9 a.m." When the tarpon decide to do business on the north side of the cut, Smith's sources will tip him off again. Keep this article in your August-September calendar in case we fail to remind you then that Smith says to fish the north jetty on the outgoing tide and the south jetty on the incoming. Capt. George Mitchell, on live bait for sailfish: "A baitfishin distress grunts. Pilchards and.threadfins actual- ly make a squeak. A goggle-eye is going to know way before you do that he's going to get eaten or something's about to pounce on him, and he'll move differently." Capt. Ray Rosher, who named his boat (Miss Britt) for his daughter, is almost that devoted to the tender, lov- ing care and nurturing of live bait, except that he feeds it to sailfish: "If it's not perfectly handled, in three to five days it'll die." Capt. Dave Pomerleau, a St. Petersburg night fishing guide ("The Mad Snooker") who guarantees you'll catch a snook or fish for free: "Be careful with your feet. If they hear you bump and squeak, they won't eat. They'll know you're coming." Shag Shahid, a bass fisherman and trick casting com- petitor in Fort Walton Beach, knows the secret to flipping - or flippin' as catalog writers call it because they think Bubbatalk sells. Flipping is a half-cast, underhanded way of getting your bait out when you're crowded by trees or fishing' buddies. With your reel set on free spool, release enough line for the lure to fall as far as the line guide nearest the reel. Use your casting hand's thumb or forefinger to pinch the line and your off hand to grab the lure by the nose ring, not the tail end where there are hooks. Pointing the rod slightly downward, swing it upward and forward, releas- ing lure and line. The secret? "Hold the lure at the bottom guide," Shahid says. What if you need to cast quickly and there's too much slack line out? "Grab the line in the left hand between the first two guides," says Shag. He's right, and he doesn't need three paragraphs to explain it. Robert Miley, a bass tournament tour professional: "Most of the time I do not see the fish. You've got to be a line watcher. When I see the line move, I set the hook. If you're looking for bigger fish, you've got to flip or you've got to throw the bigger lures. The big fish are going to be underneath the mats. "What I also like to do is look for moving water. Somewhere there's moving water. There's water moving all the time at Lake Okeechobee. You'll see a little ripple and right on this point there's going to be a bass. Guaranteed. Look for moving water, look for structure and look for change." Mark Sosin, fishing author and seminar speaker on replacing old reliable lures. "You have a beaten-up lure and you're thinking of retiring it. Don't! True, it would be very nice if buying a boat could be done with a spit and a handshake, but in light of the risks involved this is not practical. Since liens can be secret and ownership records convo- luted, good research should be done before acceptance of a vessel. These cautions should be reflected in any document. Also, hull and engine histories can be spotty on a vessel, so this too should be researched and reflected in a document. Taxation and registration can become issues that need to be reflected in the agreement after all, water is everywhere and boats travel where there's water. The list of concerns goes on but I think you've got the picture. In brief, a vessel transaction that avoids future problems during the transaction can best be accomplished by a will- ingness of the parties to invest in their own research and counsel before the transaction takes place. And yes, just as in litigation, I suggest there be an individual advisor for each party to avoid potential conflicts of interest. Now, I know some of you may regard my analysis of boat buying to be far too confrontational. However, I would have you consider the immortal words of the American writer Ambrose Bierce who wrote, 'There is no insult in treating any man as a respected enemy until they fully prove themselves to be a friend." Dad used to like that quote, and he only thought he was wrong once. Mark Ercolin is a maritime attorney based in Fort Lauderdale. HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer This is one in a series of features exploring places of interest along South Florida's waterways. This month's feature looks at the historic waterfront trail of the "Barefoot Mailman." Diane Paton-Graham has delivered mail to Fort Lauderdale homes for 36 years. But she never had to swim a river, go barefoot in the sand, take a boat or stay overnight to do her job unlike the "barefoot" postal carriers of the past who did all those things to deliver mail along Florida's east coast toward the end of 1800s. Paton-Graham has also carved out a bit of history of her own: She's one of the longest-serving female carriers in her district. Only two mail carriers with over 40 years working in Broward County outrank her in seniority. "I just kind of fell into this job, but I've loved it for all 36 years and feel lucky that I can go to work every day by the ocean," Paton-Graham said, noting that mail volume changes with the season and the advent of email. Today Paton-Graham is one of 12,000 postal carriers from Pompano Beach south to Key West, according to Rick Sullivan, coordinator of customer services for the regional office of the postal service. "Each carrier has around 500 residences assigned to them," said Sullivan, who explained that the number is much higher along the ocean where there's high-rise condos. For' example, in Galt Ocean Mile, which runs along State Road- A1A from Oakland Park Boulevard north to Lauderdale-by- the-Sea, a carrier may have just two buildings but doesn't have to travel much so can handle a larger volume. That's the case for Paton-Graham, who covers three high-rises in the Gait along with smaller condos, a few busi- nesses and only one private home. In all, it's about 1,000 units and some days her load will exceed 3,000 pieces of mail including magazines. "It's a lot easier than when I started in 1968 and had to walk nine miles a day in neighborhoods in Lauderdale Lakes," said the carrier whose current delivery area is with- in a stone's throw of the ocean and the route of the area's UrfleH first mail carriers. In 1885, the'U.S. Postal Service officially began an East Coast route that ran from Palm Beach to Miami about 68 miles with 28 of them traveled by water and the rest by foot along sandy beaches. Prior to this process, a letter leaving Jupiter would end up going north by train to New York City and then by steam- er to Cuba and then travel via trading schooner to Miami. That was a 3,000-mile trip that took a letter up to two months to arrive at its destination. When the new carrier system began, a handful of men signed up to be carriers. Many walked barefoot as they.trav- eled the coast, creating the image of the "barefoot mailman." .In her book "Magnificent Mile: A History of Hillsboro Beach," historian Carmen Racine McGarry of Hillsboro Beach recounts details of how the carriers climbed aboard boats to travel across the New River and other waterways. "The barefoot route was continued until 1892 when a rock road was completed from Jupiter to Miami," said --.- -The Barefoot Mailman statue in front of Hillsboro Beach Town Hall salutes the S legendary waterfront carriers. McGarry. The Postal Service then signed contracts with a stage line to carry mail. Today special markers honor the barefoot mailman. There's one on Fort Lauderdale Beach near the South Beach picnic area and another at the historic Hillsboro Beach Lighthouse honoring James Hamilton, who died in 1887 while delivering the mail. Alligators may have attacked Hamilton-as he attempted to cross over the Hillsboro Inlet in a small rowboat, or could have been the victim of a robber. The case was never solved. A post office in Pompano Beach is also named in Hamilton's honor. The most recognizable tribute to the historic carriers is a life-size statue in front of Hillsboro Beach Town Hall. According to McGarry, a stone statue originally stood there, but the sea air began to deteriorate the stone. It was removed and replaced in 2002 by a bronze statue. The old stone stat- ue was restored and now sits at the Hillsboro Beach Lighthouse where it faces the ocean. For carrier Paton-Graham, who lives in Lauderdale-by- the-Sea, the job has allowed her to meet interesting people. She also is following in her father's footsteps, a special delivery carrier, as was her former husband. He started volunteering with South Broward High School last fall. To date, the students have been mapping shark attacks on seals in South Africa based on research from ReefQuest, he said. Debra Hixon, assistant magnet coordinator .at South Broward High School, said students have been meeting once a week after school to discuss what will be expected of them - ,during their stay and what they will find. "When Neil offered for us to come out and collect data, we thought, 'great,' but we never expected to do it," said Hixon, who will accompany the students on the expedition. Daniell Washington, 17, a South Broward High School senior also going to South Africa, is excited over what she'll learn about the sharks. Washington, a Hollywood resident attending the University of Miami this fall, is planning a career in marine science. John Smith's historic Jamestown settlement, clipper ships once sailed into Smithfield's old wharf. They hauled goods from the outside world, later returning to their homeports with hams and peanuts, which today have made Smithfield, Va. famous. Surrounded by pastoral farmland, Smithfield is located in acurve of the serpentine Pagan River, a tributary of the James River. While cruising, you'll spot elegant old man- sions topping high riverbanks, and sweeping marshlands to the north and south where herons lunch. The Pagan River has no connection with paganism. According to legend, early settlers queried local Native Americans about the name of a nut and the response sounded like "pagan." Supposedly, they were really say- ing "pecan." Set across the. James River from urban Newport News, Smithfield population 6,000 is a historic place. Street lamps cast a nice glow on the town's colonial, federal and Georgian period houses and buildings. I recommend starting a walking tour of Old Towne with a visit to the Wight County Museum, located at the comer of Main and Church streets. You'll find a replica late 1800s country store, Indian artifacts, Civil War relics and pre-his- toric fossils from the nearby James River. Oddly, the museum also houses the world's oldest Smithfield ham at 102 years old, not to mention the largest, weighing in at 65 pounds Boykin's Tavern, constructed in 1762 and located next to the town's courthouse, jail and stockades, conveniently served meals to court officials, personnel and travelers. At St. Luke's Shrine, a wicket door within a larger front door preserves a medieval tradition frequently found--in Gothic churches. Its mellow brick walls have stood for more than three centuries, while its original traceried windows, stepped gables and buttresses are unique in the annals of American architecture. Near the Old Court House is a bronze statue of Benjamin Franklin reading the U.S. Constitution, a striking- ly lifelike image. In his day, Franklin undoubtedly enjoyed the pleasure of the town's country ham, which today soak in salt for 28 to 36 days after receiving the curing solution. When the exterior salt is washed off, the hams are hung to dry for two weeks. Genuine Smithfield hams have to be cured and processed within town limits. Where to stay Located in a 1900-era Garden House, the Smithfield Inn reflects a charming, genteel Old South with a cozy front sit- ting room and a sweeping front veranda with a row of rock- ers. The inn offers local seafood entrees in a relaxing atmos- phere where guests can dine in its two dining rooms or alfresco in the garden. The inn's English-style William Rand Tavern is a per- fect spot to meet friends for drinks and take in the local cul- ture. Downstairs is a parlor with a stone fireplace, while upstairs there are five elegant suites. Smithfield Station offers 22 waterfront rooms and two luxurious suites in a Chesapeake Bay-style lighthouse. The marina, which can accommodate boats up to 70 feet, has 60 Accommodations & Dining Smithfield Inn: 112 Main St 757-357-1752 Smithfield Station: 415 Church St. 757-357-7700; www.smithfieldstation.com. For more information, call Smithfield & Isle of Wight Tourism Bureau at 800-365-9339; www.smithfield-virginia.com. Surrounded by pastoral farmland, Smithfield is located in a curve of the serpentine Pagan River, a tributary of the James River. slips on two floating docks, with power, water and a conve- nient bathhouse and swimming pool all within walking distance of the revitalized historic district. As the sun descends on the Pagan River, travelers enjoy the romance of indoor or outdoor candlelight dining at. the Smithfield Station. You'll want to sample seafood and spe- cialty dishes unique to the area, especially the surf and turf, a dish of succulent crab cakes with Smithfield ham. Following an after dinner drink, you can pad up the stairs to your accommodations. It's the only lighthouse in Virginia where you can spend the night.
