WATERFRONT S E P T E M B E R 2003 Y ea r 2 0 I s s u e 6 ON BOARD IN SEPTEMBER NOW0 PP-, Classifieds Commentary Event Calendar Galley Tide Tables Gas tax to fuel marine law enforcement on Florida waters Funding also allocated to boating projects By ARNOLD MARKOWITZ Waterfront News writer A new law signed by Gov. Jeb Bush is June will rein- force marine law enforcement and manatee protection in the coming years. The law channels $2.5 million in funds from state fuel taxes to create 10 new law enforcement jobs in the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission. That money is e';pect- ed to come available next fiscal year, which begins Oct. I. A separate $700,000 is earmarked directly for enforcing manatee protection laws in the waters of counties with the most boat-caused manatee fatalities and injuries. That's just for the first year. In the following four years, the amount of money steered to Fish and Wildlife's Marine Resources Conservation Trust Fund is planned to rise: $5 million, next $8.5 million, followed by $10.9 million, and then $13.4 million per year. Aside from law enforcement, the money will pay for recreational boating-related projects including research, safety and education programs and activities, state waterway markers, construction and maintenance of publicly owned boat ramps, piers, docks, manatee avoidance technology and economic development grants to promote boating. The Marine Resources Conservation Trust Fund is not new. It already finances fishery enhancement. It supports the systems responsible for sport fishing licenses, boat titles and registrations. It protects marine turtles and pays for research and rehabilitation of oyster beds. The same fund supports marine law enforcement. Fla Photo/MARELLA CRANE Volunteers weren't raised as garbage collectors, but flung themselves into that trade at last year's International Coastal Cleanup in Miami. Please see accompanying story on p. 5. The law channels $2.5 million in funds from state fuel taxes to create 10 new law enforcement jobs in the Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Hardly anyone in boating and fishing would say it pays enough. The new law responds to that concern. Boaters in southeast Florida disagree on some things - for example, on how much protection manatees really need - but when it comes to law enforcement, just about every- one agrees we don't have near enough officers at work on the water. Also fueling the bill: the popular, long-running com- plaint that taxes paid by boaters are spent on everything except the public's boating-related needs. Up to now, nearly all state taxes on gasoline and diesel fuel have been spent on road-building projects. Boating projects have had to bob and dive for other funds. There are a couple of boating-related exceptions to that. Presently, $6.3 million in fuel tax revenue is used for aquat- ic plant management and $2.5 million per year is given to Fish and Wildlife for recreational channel marking, public launching facilities, aquatic plant control, recreational boat-. ing activities, freshwater fisheries management, research and other local activities. That's not necessarily marina fuel tax money. Ostensibly, the boating and waterways law's source of funds is the portion of fuel taxes paid at marinas, but in real- ty nobody knows the taxes paid on marine fuel because lusul J 'wraS rON a1r ,Cm, *me-- lo go" - ^rr te I ^^^^ R 'Copyr ghted 'Material v r t ..".. .nt Syndicated Content .Available from Commercial News Providers" * ;;a. *=w k ............ m li ** *. .. ,, .n.. .. -. -. *. .=#,.= i **< ,:t 1:-- .*i q$ ::::::, *'k :*~ *" *.:"*. ...* .* *' in.. ~ r* -rF -~~.r '....... I 0 A revamped IBEX to precede upcoming Ft. Lauderdale boat show Boat-building conference gets new date, location and organizers By BETH FEINSTEIN-BARTL Waterfront News Writer It's being billed as a new show in a new location with new dates and new owners. The International Boatbuilders' Exhibition & Conference, known as IBEX, will no longer be held in February at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. Instead, the event will take place Oct. 27 to 29 at the Miami Beach Convention Center. The changes have come about because of a partnership between the National Marine Manufacturers Association (NMMA) and Professional Boatbuilder magazine, which are working together to produce the show. Previously, Professional BoatBuilder Magazine held IBEX yearly each winter in Fort Lauderdale. NMMA had its own annual show for the past two years. The 2002 show by NMMA was in September in Atlanta, Ga. Under the new collaboration, there will now be only one show in South Florida, said Jennifer Thompson, co- director of IBEX show. The IBEX show is open only to professionals in the trade, not consumers. The move will make it less expensive Leaning Posts T-Tops Ladders Railings Arches Towers NEW RIVER WELDING AND FABRICATION 3100 State Road 84 Unit 203 Ft. Lauderdale, FL 33312 954-321-6174 on professionals and exhibitors attending the show, she said. "There was a large cry from the industry to combine both events, rather than participate in two shows," Thompson said. The dates picked for the Miami Beach IBEX show were selected to coincide with the industry's fall planning and production cycle for the new spring models, she said. 'It's the timing that the boat builders wanted," she said. The IBEX show is also coinciding near the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show. IBEX ends one day before the Fort Lauderdale show's run, from Oct. 30 to Nov. 3. But some companies, it seems, are balking at the new IBEX dates. "It's created a problem for a number of exhibitors who are in the Fort Lauderdale Boat Show," said Kaye Pearson, president of Show Management, Inc., producers of the Fort Lauderdale event. "There's no time for them to move their exhibits from Fort Lauderdale to Miami Beach. They must have two exhibits." But organizers say having the two shows so close together hasn't affected participation from exhibitors. About 700 manufacturers are expected for IBEX and there is a waiting list of 300 companies, many of which are being assigned booth space and will be in the how, said Carl Cramer, publisher of Professional BoatBuilder magazine. Special arrangements are being made for exhibitors participating in both the IBEX and Fort Lauderdale boat shows, Cramer said. The Fort Lauderdale boat show, which will be in six locations throughout the city, is also expecting to sell out its space and have a waiting list, Pearson said. Neither IBEX nor the Fort Lauderdale boat show expect visitor attendance to lag at either, say organizers. The IBEX show is expected to draw between 7,000 and 10,000 people, more than the combined total when there were two separate boat-building shows, Thompson said. Average attendance at IBEX when it was held in Fort Lauderdale was 4,800. The Professional BoatBuilder mag- azine show in Atlanta drew around 2,000 visitors, she said. Visitors to the IBEX show on Miami Beach will find more products on display. There will also be a new interna- tional pavilion of exhibitors, featuring boat-building associ- ations from around the world whose members are interest- ed in selling to the U.S. market, Thompson said. Exhibits will include those from the United Kingdom, China, New Zealand, the Netherlands and Italy, she said. Other new additions will be a Best Practices Management series with business leaders from outside the boat industry, she said. Moving from the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center to the Miami Beach Convention Center will eventually allow for more space, Cramer said. Fla. coastline for trash By ARNOLD MARKOWITZ Waterfront News Writer "I don't know any mamas and daddies who are raising their little boys to be garbagemen," a short-handed Miami sanitation chief once lamented. He could have learned a thing or two about recruitment from the people who run the Ocean Conservancy's annual International Coastal Cleanup. For one morning a year - Saturday, Sept 20, this year thousands of eager garbage- men, women, boys and girls volunteer to pick up tons of trash. They do it for free, they have fun and they get results, which are reflected in records from last year's half-day event on our local shores: Broward County: 860 people gathered 5,117 pounds of trash from 33.2 miles of coastline. Palm Beach 1,503 people, 15,929 pounds, 32.5 miles. Miami-Dade: 644 people, 14,010 pounds, 14.0 miles. That's a little more than 17 tons of flotsam and jetsam. Now the bad news: If it's possible to gather that much trash from just a fraction of the local coastline in three or four hours, imagine what's left behind to strangle shorebirds and turtles, pollute the breeding and nurturing grounds of fish and other waterlife, and generally stink up the place for all who value our waters. How does the junk get there? Ocean Conservancy's sta- tistical analyses, culminating from 16 years of detailed debris scorecards, mostly exonerate the boating and boat- based fishing public. Most of the trash is washed or tossed into bays and seas from ashore, accidentally or on purpose. It's easy to identify the sources. You know those over- flowing marina trash bins that your town or county empties after a couple of days of wind and rain? Check out a coastal picnic ground late on a Sunday afternoon. Find an outflow pipe from a storm drain and see what comes out besides rainwater. But even if boating and fishing people deserve little blame, it's still our problem. Michele Clary, Ocean Conservancy's cleanup coordinator for Florida, comments on why we should give that morning to pro bono manual labor. "The cleanup is extremely important to boaters and fishermen because the volunteers who participate clean up debris that can harm the environment the fish live and spawn in, as well as cause hazards to boaters when the debris gets caught in propellers, etcetera. Behind every piece of trash there is a face so each individual who cleans up makes a valuable difference." %-~-----~ l~s~c~;~r~-;~pS Photo/MARELLA CRANE Two volunteers in last year's International Coastal Cleanup stoop and pick trash along the Bear Cut bridge between Key Biscayne and Virginia Key. This year the project is scheduled for Saturday morning, Sept 20. The haul should be huge: On just a fraction of the shores of Miami- Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties in half a day last year, more than 17 tons of junk, trash, rubbish, garbage, debris and refuse were collected by volunteers. dr - -. -"" -~d ----'7 .-.-- . T 17' Zvi, It, "7" -9,,:;~ I: I~~ Lp. ..~ There are several cleanup efforts in Dade. Every year in April, Miami-Dade County sponsors Baynanza, a massive and festive volunteer cleanup tied to a season of special marine events. On smaller scales, Hands On Miami regular- ly cleans up Pelican Island near the 79th Street Causeway in Miami, and Dr. Tom Kazo of Davie leads a navy of canoe paddlers devoted to removing debris from the waterways of Miami-Dade's Matheson Hammock Park. Both plan to be out there for the Ocean Conservancy cleanup, whose scope is worldwide. Marella Crane, a Miami-Dade marine extension agent, is leader of the Bear Cut cleanup zone, between Key Biscayne and Virginia Key. Crane gets most of her volun- teers from high school and middle school classes, 4-H Clubs, SCUBA doers and environmental groups like the Sierra Club. Typically, 200 to 250 people a year stoop and pick at Bear Cut. Most of the stuff they collect is just trash, the sort of stuff you'd toss in your car's litterbag. Occasionally there's something unusual, like a gravestone or a pearl necklace or a safe. It was so rusty and old, it was hard to tell what it ,as from." . It wasn't exactly gigantic no more than three feet on any side but it did weigh 150 pounds. Not all sites draw as many volunteers as Bear Cut. "Lugo Point and Bella Vista in Coral Gables are usual- ly short," Crane said. "So is Momingside Park in Miami." Anyone interested in helping there can call Momingside coordinator. And, Wmr T liM-Ti By RICK ROUGHEN Waterfront News Columnist In recent months, I have challenged Port Everglades' anti-boating decision to extricate Dry Marinas from its long- standing lease on port property. The industry needs a port facility that would accommodate and service the new class of super-yachts that have been motoring past our shores. Fort Lauderdale is the yachting capi- tal of the world whose credibility may be on its way into the hopper. Miami's shortsighted inaction led to Fort Lauderdale's silent capture of the mega-yacht market over the last 20 years. But recently we have taken Miami's lead and charted a course for disaster. A demoralizing decision was recent- ly handed down by the Broward County Commission that will cost the marine industry, and all those who benefit from its economic impact, billions of dollars over the years to come. Successful manipulation influenced a critical decision to do away with the allocation of 27 acres on the Dania Cutoff Canal for a super-yacht facility that would have accommodated vessels up to 350 feet in length. Does anybody understand what that means? The marine industry is the largest privately operated industry in South Florida, delivering over $8.8 billion in economic impact to our community annually. The distinction of being recog- nized as the yachting capital of the world is a title worth preserving. The Broward County Commission is responsible for making informed deci- sions that impact our community. The current decision to abandon the alloca- tion of 27 acres in Port Everglades to the marine industry is a bad decision that should be reconsidered. I publicly invite Broward County commissioners to take a trip on a yacht up the New River and through Port Everglades to visually inspect the marine scene up close and personal. I will invite a handful of industry leaders to accompa- ny us to point out specific issues that our commissioners could not possibly under- stand without seeing for themselves. I will report back in a subsequent column to let readers know if the industry was given its fair chance. And hopefully, some wisdom will impart. With our waterways packed to the gills and with our expertise in servicing big yachts, why wouldn't city officials lend assistance to building a greater marine community. The only answer that comes to mind is ignorance. Not the malicious kind, mind you, but that which reeks of a clear lack of understanding. At that recent county commission meeting, many audience members sat for a large part of the day with the intent of speaking on behalf of the marine indus- try. They never had the chance and were forced to leave for other commitments. I heard others who are new on the scene with a different and a clearly biased agenda make loud and obnoxious state- ments to commissioners that were simply not true. Somehow, those opinions were deemed worthy of a final decision, and that was that. The marine industry needs to main- tain the ability to, service all levels of clientele to remain healthy and vibrant. The 27-acre parcel that lies at the far southwest corner of Port Everglades property represents a trivial piece of the whole. As a super-yacht facility, it would pose -I-ltuasa't-- * DESIGN SALES SERVICE PARTS or just a little advice? We're here to help and answer all of your questions. That should offset at least 20 or 30 Re: the $300 Bahamas boater entry fees recently enact- ed: Reviewing the give and take (more like accuse and shout) on the recent "protest" website set up by critics of the fee, there are a host of posts asserting that U.S. boaters are destroying Bahamas fishing, and should be made to pay to enjoy the waters. Most of the boaters offer different view. A recurring theme is that the U.S. charges Bahamians a sales tax when they shop here, and somehow that is the same thing. There's a troubling sense that U.S citizens are taking advantage of Bahamians in some way, that they get nothing from our presence there and therefore we should be made to pay. In the recent tragic collision of two Bahamian vessels, reports said the U.S. Coast Guard dispatched a helicopter and crew that made repeated flights to transport injured persons to the hospital. I in no way begrudge this action, and at the same time I would like to know who picks up the tab for the machinery and crew for such an operation. I wonder exactly what do American taxpayers do, if any- thing, for the fine people of the Bahamas? What general assistance, grants, Coast Guard personnel and materials may Bahamians be benefiting from? This information, if positive, might help offset the hostility and damaged feelings, appar- ent at least from the posters on the protest website. If it's business as usual, then Uncle Sam is likely sending aid, materials, money and so forth. If we picked up the tab on the recent rescue mission, we entry fees (likely a lot more) that some feel so entitled to. If the facts prove we are sending money and manpower; that makes a point that Americans are not simply taking advan- tage, as some Bahamians apparently feel. It would benefit us all to root out the facts and present them. If I'm wrong in suspecting we're spending and send- ing, and if the boater doesn't drop enough cash on their vis- its to please Bahamians, then the fairness issue can and should continue on the merits of the current information. I am a live-aboard and many time visitor to the Bahamas, as I'm sure a lot of your readers are, and am keenly interested in the outcome of this controversy and how it will affect all our relations. It could mean the seller has not completed the deal with the vessel's actual owner and you could be left in the middle of a dispute (it could also be possible that the vessel is stolen, but that's anoth- er story). You should also keep in mind that salesmen who sell boats under 32 feet in length are not licensed by the state and are not required to be bonded. Make sure the other party signs it too, and make copies of the completed title along with a bill of sale signed by all parties. If this is a state titled boat and you cannot accompany the buyer to a tag office, go on your own to at least let them know via affidavit that the vessel has been sold. This mon- th's feature highlights one of the state's last remaining iron swing bridges. By WILLIAM R. HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer In south Florida, bridges are a fact of life for both motorists and boaters. And while some are big and expansive like Fort Lauderdale's multi-million dollar E. Clay Shaw, Jr. 17th Street Causeway Bridge others are small, narrow and lead to a tiny isle of few houses. Unlike the city's modern bridges with their computer- ized equipment, the landmark Southwest 11th Avenue bridge over the North Fork of the New River doesn't open up using a powerful hydraulic lift. SThis old bridge can swing open with the aid of manual labor. A bridge tender walks out into the middle of the iron structure, pushes a few buttons allowing the bridge to phys- ically turn, so that boats can pass beneath. If the electrical power goes out, the bridge tender can always revert to a hand crank to move the aging structure. The unique iron swing bridge, located between two his- toric neighborhoods Sailboat Bend and Riverside Park - is the oldest one of its kind in Broward County, and one of only two remaining in all of Florida. The other is located in Miami Springs. In 1924, or 79 years ago, the span was built by the Champion Bridge Co. of Wilmington Ohio. And, while city . officials have pondered replacing it, next year will mark the bridge's 80th anniversary. It was originally designed to be cranked by hand. But in 1930, a gasoline engine was added to allow for a motor to do the work. In 1954, an electric motor replaced the gas turbine. But every once in awhile, the modern motor breaks down and the bridge must be hand-cranked by a bridge ten- der, who sits inside a small bridge house on the Sailboat ervuce 9 Years of QualiyEquipment & Serice TECHNICOLD Refrigeration Systems Air Conditioning Systems Service Center & Showroom 201 SW 7th Avenue Fort Lauderdale FL 33312 Phone (954) 764-6192 Fax (954) 764-7259 RICH BEERS MARINE INC. John McDowell, Fort Lauderdale's coordinator of maintenance, said the city has a contract with a private firm, the G.E. Co., which staffs the bridge 24 hours a day. "There has to be someone there to swing open the bridge when boats need to move along the New River," McDowell said. The bridge was authorized by Fort Lauderdale city commissioners in the early 1920s and was built throughout the terms of two city mayors: E.G. Snow and Will J. Reed. When it was first dedicated, it became known as the Snow- Reed Bridge in honor of the two politicians. 4S.A. HAWKINS -. Southwest 11th Avenue swings open throughout any given day, allowing boats to pass along the New River. Over the years, the 168-foot span has been updated to ensure the security of its wooden beams and boards. The bridge sits on a large concrete column in the center of the river and moves through a combination of axles, rollers and large and small gears. In 1984, the center pier was replaced on which the bridge's turning mechanism sits. Like other bridges along the New River, the iron swing bridge opens upon demand, as boats have the right of way. The bridge tender either responds to a radio call from an approaching boat or listens for a boat horn seeking an opening. For motorists, the bridge can be a frustrating shortcut to and from homewhen they're forced to wait as boats slowly pass by. - In 1973, the city explored the'idea bfreplacing the swing bridge, but the $1 million cost along with preservationists' outcry over losing a bit of city history, saved the structure. Current plans call for seeking federal and state grants to preserve the landmark's historical value with paint, landscaping, signage and improvements to the bridge ten- der's house. HAWKINS Waterfront News Writer Thousands of injured or abandoned animals both domestic and wild are getting a second chance at Fort Lauderdale's Wildlife Care Center. "It's a busy place and as more and more area land is developed we are finding wildlife that is being displaced and threatened and many end up here," said Diane Watchinski, director of development for the agency at 3200 SW 4th Ave. Ross Fischer, a vetererian and director of veterinary services, said he sees problems ranging from pelicans entangled with fishing wire to abandoned domestic ani- mals like rabbits. "I enjoy the work because there's always so much happening with such a wide range of animals, but it's dis- turbing that our patient load continues to climb," he said. The center, now in its 34th year of service, in the last year handled nearly 13,000 animal patients. The facility also: Found new homes for 1,100 abandoned domestic ani- mals (rabbits, mice, gerbils, birds). Rescued via its mobile ambulance 2,400 animals in I t ~r.. j'a e-iM i trouble and transported them to the center for:care., Raised more than 2,600 baby birds and mammals in the center's nursery. Outreached in 200 special education programs to more than 11,000 children and adults, teaching them how to co-exist with wildlife and respect for all animals. "We couldn't do any of this without the 500 volun- teers who help maintain some of our services and pro- grams 365 days a year," Watchinski said. In 1969, Bea Humphreys, who cared for hundreds of animals from the garage of her home, took steps to create the center. Adopting her mission to rescue, rehabilitate and release native wildlife, the center began with a volun- teer board that raised funds to create the existing staffed center. Today, it takes a $1.5 million budget to fund the 2.5- acre center and its work. "We are heavily dependent upon donations from the public, although we are always working on special grants and get some funding from governmental units," said Watchinski. For Susan Gross of Weston, volunteering once a week is a thrill because she gets to feed the baby birds and mammals in the nursery. "I love it," she said. "They are so helpless and I know that what I am doing will help them live." The center's facilities are spread out. Rabbits are in one area (there can be an average 75 of them at any given time) to birds in another shelter, domestic animals in a I WM'!IIUg m. Photo/WILLIAM R. A Bahama pintail duck, which had found its way into a smokestack on a cruise ship and lodged there until it was freed once in port, is now recuperating at the center. "We're arranging to get it back to the Bahamas," Watchinski said. Fischer said the happiest time for him is when staff releases a healthy animal back into its natural habitat. But with development swallowing up wildlife areas, the center continues to seek new lands. Earlier this year, a partnership with the Florida Nature and Culture Center has opened up a 125-acre tract of untouched Everglades land with a 20-acre lake for wildlife. Sometimes the center ships select wildlife off to sanctuaries around the country. Injured animals wind up at the center usually because people call in. Some bring the animals to the facility, or volunteers or staff go out and rescue them. There are spe- cial care center cages at many marinas in Broward County where injured water animals are taken for pick up. Often domestic animals like rabbits and the like are dropped off at the center. Jewelry Plus Certified Watchmakers Specializing In Full Service: Rolex Tag Heuer Movado Omega S-N. Right there, the mangrove shoreline greatly needs pick- er-uppers, Colbert said. She's counting on Friends of Biscayne Bay and Hands on Miami to supply some volun- teers, but she can use a lot more, including some with boats. "If we get more than a dozen or so volunteers, we may need to expand to boats to go to some of the islands,' Colbert said. If you're able to bring yours, call her at 305-795-3485. Hands on Miami regularly cleans up on Pelican Island, north of the marina, but that's just one of a three-mile string of mangrove-rimmed islets stretching from there to the 125th Street (Broad) Causeway. Mangroves, created before garbage was invented, are supposed to be marine maternity wards. Their labyrinthine roots probably weren't meant to serve as trash rakes, but they also do that very effectively. Trouble is, the two func- tions don't mix well. "I have helped to organize the Coastal Clean-ups in Broward and Palm Beach counties, but it was usually in con- nection with a beach," Colbert said. "Mangroves are a little trickier, but they definitely need the help because of the plas- tic bags that wrap around the red mangrove prop roots and the pieces of styrofoam, plastic bottles, etcetera that wash onto the mudflats." Ocean Conservancy asks cleanup volunteers to keep score in order to gather accurate information for its educa- tional programs and government policy-makers. For exam- ple, the organization reports that last year the volunteers roughly collected more than 1.6 million cigarette filters, 1.1 million bags and food wrappers, almost 500,000 caps and lids, 48,000 pieces of fishing line, 26,000 pieces of fishing Close-up Want to join the cleanup? "Wholesalers sell to lots of different outlets, some of which are marinas and many of which are not," said David Bruns, spokesman for the Florida Department of Revenue. "We don't track the marina fuel sales separately, and don't have any reason to do so." Bruns also said that many boat owners fill up at gas stations, not marinas. The State Senate's Finance and Taxation Committee based the theoretical marina fuel tax allocation on Department of Transportation estimates. According to those, marina sales accounted for $36.4 million in state fuel taxes in fiscal year 2001-02. In the current 2002-03 fiscal year, it's expected to rise to $37.9 million. The estimate for the fol- lowing year is $43.3 million. Although consumers pay their share of fuel taxes at the retail pump, the state already has collected it from fuel wholesalers. We're just paying them back. The new law doesn't give all the tax money collected on marine-use fuel to boating-specific uses -just a percentage. The Senate says that by 2004-05, the new money for Fish and Wildlife plus the fuel taxes already having aquatic pur- poses will equal 40 percent of the taxes paid on fuel sold at marinas. In 2006-07, it's predicted to be about 50 percent. Overall, state fuel tax collections increase every year in Florida-up by 4.3 percent in the last fiscal year, 2001-02, when the Department of Revenue reported collecting more than $2.8 billion in fuel taxes. How much fuel does that represent? 7,614,933,421.6 gallons of gas, not counting diesel. Too many digits and commas? No, it's not a sequel to the hit movie, "Pirates of the Caribbean." But if folks see some boaters who look as if they could be extras in the film along Fort Lauderdale's waterway, it's because they are participating in the Gulfstream Sailing Club's Boatathalon. The annual floating scavenger hunt has a different theme each year. This year's is based on "Pirates of the Caribbean," said Pat Nannery, the club's rear commodore. The boatathalon will be held Sept. 20 and is open to members of Gulfstream and other local sailing clubs, said Nannery, a Fort Lauderdale resident. The cost is $10 per person and includes a pig roast. Prizes donated by area businesses such as restaurants and boat supply stores will be awarded to the winners, he said. Nannery has helped organize the hunts for the last five years. The event involves four to five stops where boaters are asked to perform certain nautical tasks. They will also be asked questions related to the movie, navigation and boating safety rules, he said. The club is expecting about 100 people. In the past, mostly Gulfstream members and members from Sailing Singles of South Florida have participated, he said. "But we are open to participation from other sailing clubs," Nannery said. Norman Smith, a past commodore of the Gulfstream Sailing Club who organized last year's hunt, said the group has been holding the scavenger hunts for the past eight to -WwAhsynHomeSeroh-info Rmgupq t-.r Sl>dJfcitclk' info -NOT.LmI Your ONE Source... to see ALL homes & neighborhoods Comprehensive information &resources plus detais &photos by emai... directly siom S info(@BenAndfjem -nicomr Ie4)938-5106 Ben &Jeannie Ellis REAL ES-TATE BROKERS Council of 3Hometown' lrowledge Integrity. "It was an idea some of the members had and thought it would be a way for us to increase our presence in the city," Smith said. Last year's theme was based on John MacDonald's series of detective books. Activities included kayak races in Lake Sylvia, building rafts out of pool noodles and string and putting together a wooden puzzle, he said. Other past themes involved the movie, "African Queen", and Ernest Hemingway's "Islands in the Stream," Smith said. A committee comes up with themes and plans the hunt, with stops at local waterfront restaurants, resorts and mari- nas to perform tasks or search for items. "It's to help local businesses recognize who we are and for us to recognize them," he said. Committee members can come up with some real brain- teasers, such as the question posed several years ago when boaters were asked, "when does a sailfish need a trim?" The answer: when it is a topiary in someone's back yard. Participants can also earn extra points for bringing in certain items, dressing up in costume and decorating their boats, Smith said. "It's challenging," he said. 'It's a good chance for boat owners to have a lot of interaction with each other." For more information call 954-583-3738, or log on to www.gulfstreamsailingclub.org. Boat-building show relocates to Miami Show at the Miami Beach Convention Center each February, he said. "The new location will be great," said Cramer, whose magazine has organized the show at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center for 10 of its 12 years. The show will have the same amount of room this year in Miami Beach, as it did at the Fort Lauderdale Convention Center. But next year, another hall will be added, expanding the space by 50 percent, he said. 'The reality was there were two shows:' Cramer said. "Nobody was winning with that. The Massachusetts seaport has long been a lure to sailors. Today, Marblehead's sheltered harbor is recognized as one of the country's leading sailing centers, draped in a forest of sailboat masts most summer and autumn weekends. At nearby yacht clubs, cannons are fired in a sonic ritual at sunrise and sundown. Much of Marblehead's charm is its end- of-the-road locale. Long known as a bed- room suburb (located 17 miles north of Boston), plenty of inns and B&B's, trendy restaurants and upscale shops cater to tourists and residents on Marblehead Neck, the mansion-lined peninsula that shelters the harbor from the open sea, and visitors in Old Town at the harbor's edge. A vigorous industry of rope-makers, sail-makers, ship's block-makers and car- penters helped foster thriving fishing and shipping fleets. The family-owned Yankee Fleet has presided over the north Atlantic waters for over 45 years. They've got fast fishing boats with upper sundecks and full galleys for half-day fishing trips, and a wide wooden boat that sits close to the water for serious all day fishing. They've also got comfortable accommodations to sleep fifty for overnight fishing excursions. Yankee Fleet trips head out to both Jeffrey's Ledge and Stellwagen Bank, two of the richest fishing grounds in the Atlantic. The company also builds custom fishing rods. Marblehead residents fight fiercely to uphold the .town's original character. More than two centuries ago George Washington described the town as having "the look of antiquity." It still does. The sea merchants' ..s;.,,c-,-............- A mansions and gabled cottages along Marblehead's hilly, twisting lanes reflect its 375 year-old history. There are more than 300 pre- Revolutionary structures in the half-mile- square historic district. A walking tour takes visitors to the one-of-a-kind Jeremiah Lee Mansion, the art galleries in the King Hooper Mansion, the 1727 Old Town House that predates Boston's Faneuil Hall, the brick-towered Abbot Hall landmark (perma- nent home of the famous painting, "The Spirit of '76"). The Lafayette House, the Fort Sewall harbor fortification and the sec- ond oldest U.S. Episcopal church are other spots worth visiting. Specialty stores are concentrated around Washington Street in Old Town, and along School Street, Atlantic Avenue and Pleasant Street in the newer uptown area. In Hestia Handcrafts' tiny showroom, fine miniatures in clay and porcelain are on display and sold to collectors across the country. Delphin's Gourmandise showcases sen- sational French patisserie where master pas- try chef Delphin Gomes creates treats like the plum tart. Stowaway Sweets is housed in a quaint English country cottage where a candy maker and four dippers produce chocolates as they have since 1929. The chocolates have been a tradition at Marblehead, Mass. is recognized as one of the country's leading sailing destinations. During the 1600s Marblehead's earliest settlers were a mix of rugged fishermen, enterprising merchants, skilled craftsmen and the self-reliant. Buckingham Palace and the White House since Queen Mary and Franklin Roosevelt. On the waterfront, Landings recently gutted the interior to produce a pub in front and a nautical look in the rear dining area. Walls of mirrors bear colorful sails and a two-level deck overlooks the water. The deck is warmed with propane heat for use in the fall. For starters, the menu boasts pan- seared sea scallops with raspberry-cilantro- balsamic reduction and wasabi-potato chop- sticks garnish or a flaky mushroom and cheese pie. Main dishes include cumin- seared salmon with toasted chestnuts pver Italian couscous, chargrilled ahi tuna with a port wine demi-glace, grilled duck breast atop. creamy risotto, and toumedos rossini. A fixture since 1946, Maddie's Sail is a favorite watering hole, known for wicked drinks. Harborside House offers gracious accommodations and warm hospitality with a gorgeous view of the harbor. The B&B is a handsome 1858 home in the historic district with antique furnishings and period wallpa- per, a period dining room and cozy breakfast porch. It's a short stroll to art galleries, shops of local craftsmen and dining experiences The earliest portion of the Harbor Light Inn was built in 1729 by joiner Samuel Goodwin, who helped transform Marblehead from a simple fishing village to high-styled seaside town. In 1819, the inn expanded the original two-story, four-room house into the three-story, hipped-roof Federal house it remains today. Many of the house's architectural details were preserved, including carved fireplace mantels, dentiled moldings, and wide-plank floors. The inn was further enlarged in 1992 when an adjacent circa 1820 home was purchased. From the rooftop, you can gaze upon the landmark Marblehead Light, imagining how it felt to watch and wait for the clipper ships that sailed into this beguiling seaport.
