This report presents to the growers cooperating in a three year state-
wide survey the data obtained on mineral composition of the leaves, fertilizer
applications, and tree age in their pink and red grapefruit groves on two root-
stocks. The intent of presenting this information is to give the grower a
picture of the variations in the mineral element concentrations in the leaves,
Also, the results serve as a reference to growers of these commercial varieties,
and to the researcher interested in grapefruit nutrition.
This survey was conducted during the 1954-57 seasons under the direction
of Doctor L. G. MacDowell, Florida Citrus Commission, in cooperation'with the
Florida Citrus Experiment Station and the Citrus and Vegetable Inspection Division
of the Florida Department of Agriculture,
Some of the conditions pertaining to the groves in this survey are
briefly presented. Although a fruit quality survey was conducted for four sea-
sons, leaf samples were collected during only the last three. All groves were
selected on a voluntary basis. During the survey about 160 groves were avail-
able on the average for each season, one grove each in Dade, Hardee, and Marion,
two groves in Hernando, four groves in Pinellas, five in Manatee, six in St.
.Lucie, seven each in Brevard and Pasco, eight each in Highlands and Hillsborough,
sixteen in Orange, thirty nine in Lake and fifty six in Polk County. The total
area approximated 3,000 acres, most of which were located in Lake and Polk Counties.
In nearly two-thirds of the groves, trees were set at 25 ft. x 25 ft., 25 ft. x
30 ft., or 30 ft. x 30 ft. The age of the trees in two-thirds of the groves
ranged from 6 to 11 years. Ruby Red grapefruit was the most popular variety
with rough lemon the most common rootstock, In general during these three sea-
sons, the weather was extremely dry.
Although the fertilizer and spray practices varied considerably, nearly
one-half of the groves received fertilizer in two applications each season, that
is spring and fall. The same proportion of groves received dolomite or lime,
but most received soluble sources of magnesium. Each tree in more than one-third
of the groves was fertilized with two pounds each of nitrogen and potash during
any season. One-half of the groves were sprayed four or five times, with an
equal fraction receiving a zinc spray. In addition, one-third of the groves re-
ceived boron; two-thirds, manganese; and three-quarters, copper, applied either
as a spray, fertilizer, or both. Three groves out of four were sprayed with
arsenic for early maturity or high ratio.
Throughout every grove the inspectors tagged six trees from which they
collected leaf samples in June of each season. Two spring flush leaves,
approximately three months old were sampled randomly from each corner of a tree
for a total of 48 leaves per sample. Approximately 500 samples were collected.
The data are tabulated according to season, variety, rootstock, and
grove number. The nitrogen, potassium, calcium, phosphorus and magnesium are
expressed as percentages in the dry leaves. Tree age and the pounds of nitrogen
and potash applied to each tree during a season are also listed.
