New pesticides are accompanied by claims of superior control.
Regardless of theirnature, each new compound should be tested using a
standard product for comparison of efficacy. The following tests were
designed to evaluate the efficacy of methyl-bis-thiocyanate (VP-454
available from Vineland Chemical Co.) and propamocarb (Previcur(N-6S
available from Nor-Am Agricultural Products, Inc.) compared to ethazol
(Truban 25 EC available from Mallinckrodt Inc.) for control of
damping-off of schefflera (Brassaia actinophylla) caused by Pythium sp.

A steam sterilized potting medium consisting of Canadian peat,
cypress shavings and pine bark (2:1:1 by volume) was amended with 6 kg
Osmocote((14:14:14), 4 kg dolomite, and 1 kg Perk(per cubic meter of
the mix. Equal quantities of this mix were blended with either sterile
culture medium or a slurry of the medium containing Pythium sp. Five
pots each were planted with ten schefflera seeds for each of the treat-
ments listed in the table. Pots were drenched with 100 ml of the
appropriate solution at the following rates: VP-454 0.56 ml/gal,
Previcur N 11.8 ml/gal, Truban 25 EC 3 ml/gal, or water. Seed
germination was recorded weekly for four weeks. This test was performed
three times.

The average percent germination per pot for each treatment in the
three tests is given in the table. Results differed for each test but
some general conclusions may be drawn. Both VP-454 and Previcur N
varied substantially in these tests, providing adequate control in the
presence of Pythium sp. in one test and no control in another. The best
overall treatment was Truban 25 EC which provided good control of
Pythium sp. in both tests in which it was included,

These tests are not conclusive or meant to recommend use of one
fungicide over another but under our conditions Truban 25 EC provided
the best control of schefflera seed damping-off due to Pythium sp.
It appears that under some conditions both VP-454 and Previcur N will
give limited control of damping-off although not equal to that of

YMeans in the same column followed by the same letter were not
significantly different using Duncan's Multiple Range Test at the 5%
