Pesticide recommendations are given normally in quantities needed per
100 gallons water. An easy and reproducible method of measuring pesticides
is needed for growers using smaller volumes. This report contains a simple
and efficient method for measurement of small volumes of some pesticides
that are registered for use in the Florida Foliage Industry.
The suggested quantities given in this report are on both a 100 gallon
and 1 gallon basis. The concentrations upon which measurements are based are
those that have been found to be generally safe to foliage plants and
effective in disease, mite,,insect or nematode control.
To accurately and safely measure small pesticide quantities, the following
items are needed: a set of aluminum measuring spoons, a pot label, a Wilson
"Agri-Tox" type respirator, plastic safety goggles, a pair of Playtex-type
rubber gloves and a light plastic apron. The first two items are needed to
properly measure the pesticide and the last four should be worn for safe handling
of the pesticide.
If the pesticide is a wettable powder, the quantity needed is obtained as
1. Dip the measuring spoon into the open pesticide'contaiher and carefully
extract an abundant quantity while holding the spoon over the opened
container. '
2. Take a clean label and gently push the pesticide into the spoon.
3. With the broad flat surface of the wooden label using a back and forth
motion, level the pesticide even with the top of the spoon. The
excess pesticide will fall back into the opened container.
4. Put the required amount of pesticide into the spray or drench tank,
already containing approximately one half the total volume of water
required. Wash off any pesticide adhering to the spoon and label
into the tank with the remaining water and bring the mixture to the
total volume required.
5. After proper agitation or mixing, this small volume should be very
close in concentration to large tank mixtures.

Note: When measuring an emulsifiable concentrate, the pesticide should be
poured carefully into the spoon held over the partially filled spray or drench
tank. If the pesticide container is too large to handle, pour a portion of
the pesticide into a smaller container from which pouring into the measuring
spoon can be accomplished more easily. Again, the pesticide should be washed
off the measuring spoon into the tank. Emulsifiable concentrate measurement
requires a person with a steady hand to eliminate too high a concentration
which can easily result from spills occurring during pouring.
Do not measure pesticides without proper safety equipment. Do not take
short cuts and by-pass the proper measuring technique stated. The measurements
needed to produce desired concentrations of pesticide solution are based
partially on tests run at the Agricultural Research Center, Apopka, and they
will give you the desired concentration only if you measure-the pesticide
properly. Remember, improper measurement can result in either poor pest control
(too little measured) or plant injury (too much measured).
After measuring the needed portion of pesticide, all pesticide containers
should be immediately locked in a suitable pesticide room and any spilled
pesticide cleaned up and disposed of. All labels should be read carefully prior
to using a pesticide, particularly if the pesticide has not been used previously.
